  1. hi all, thanks for your input.

for an up grade to win64bit.

so it looks as tho i have to stick with 32bit.

    so i can use thunderbird.

    eudora is interesting

the spam blocker is only in the paid version.

im not sure how to get round that.

i have a winxppro64bit instaltion disk going to waste.

    maybe ican sell it

    again thanks to both posters

Marty Have you tried Pegasus Mail Not sure if it can do what you want but it is worth your while to try it.

  2. just curious, did you have any trouble activating your product?

no. It is still a legit install with a legit Prod. code so activation was not a problem.

I did not try it on my systen since they are running great but I used the same disk on a family members computer using the OEM Prod Code on the case label and it worked fine.

  3. I have PeoplePc's Internet security running on my system. I just had to reinstall everything on this system and now when I get on-line, I have a bunch of sites trying to access my system. I have the choice of blocking or allowing them to access my system. I click on the Apply every time and then block them. Is this something new that hackers are doing? I have every update from Windows Update and run Spy Bot S&D, Ad aware, Spywareblaster, Avg and the Internet security system from People PC. I do get a few Cookies and Some Coolweb Search problems found from these programs. Oh and I also run CWShredder with nothing showing up from it. Any Ideas, or do I just keep blocking these guys? I had 4 of them while typing this message.

It is called network noise nothing new a decent firewall would learn what to allow or not to.

There should be an option to not bother you with this. ZoneAlarm can do this (since sygate is no more it is my top choice) Kerio is good also (maybe should be my first choice.

C.O.M.O.D.O. is new to me but it is free and worth some test for me soon.

I do not trust any software given by a ISP. So I would not trust PeoplePC's stuff but I maybe wrong

  5. that is interesting. Just for fun I took a look at my oem xp home disc. it has a number like this:

    Pid=76477OEM

according to the link it should look like this, I wonder why they are different

    Pid=82503OEM

Pid=82503OEM is just the syntax (lack of a better word) the OEM part is the key

    mine reads

    Pid=55285OEM

  6. The proprietary computers use an OEM key which will not work with the upgrade disk. There is a trick in changing a file so that you can burn a slipstreamed disk and have it identify itself as OEM or Retail. I will have to search for the information. I have yet to try it. It is supposed to make it easier when creating disks for different versions of XP for restore/recovery purposes when you only have one version. The only difference between a WinXP Home Upgrade, OEM and Retail is an identifying code that is contained within the file. The same goes for Pro.

    Found it.

    Unlocking WinXP's setupp.ini

Thanks! and to all commented. I would have never found that info. I wish google did boolean/stupid/duh:

it all goes back to trash in trash out. If you do not know how to word your search you will never find it. I bookmarked that page I will try it this week.

I happened across that tidbit a long time ago when I was searching for ways to *cough* defeat XP activation.

worked great! thanks I now have a working OEM upgrade.

  8. I have three PCs each cam with a product code for Windows XP home edition and the hidden partition to restore to factory. I usually keep a updated image of each PC to restore should it all go bad, this is so I do not have to un-install all the factory crap that came with it should the crash.

Here is my question (I have heard yes and not but have never tried it to know since the op has never presented itself):

I have a old copy of XP home ed. upgrade w/ it's own Product code that I no longer have installed on any PC. I have slipstreamed the Service packs into it, can I use it (should I decided to chuck it all and reformat)

on all three PCs using thier own perspective product codes (the ones printed on thier labels) and it work?

I would like to retain the spare copy should I build another PC.

Thanks I'll be researching until I hear your comments

  9. I finally am getting used to googles calandar. It seems really intuative. Once you get used to it, it is much better the yahoos.

Do you have a reason for needing it to be Web-Based? If you don't why not try Mozilla Sunbird

    http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/s...d/download.html

there is also a portable version for a jumpdrive that makes it portable.

    http://portableapps.com/apps/office/organi...ortable_sunbird

it is what I use. Hotmail and Mail.com have nice calendars I prefer mail.com's to Hotmail.

    My wife uses Desktop Calendar

  10. I have used MusicMatch Jukebox for many years now. I don't buy a lot of music anymore but I subscribe to their on-demand service it is like having the worlds largest music collection at my finger tips. when I find a song I want to take with me I buy it then. Most of the time I just Que up a bunch and listen at home. This is not for everyone I get special pricing (reward of long history with them) I only pay $17.95 per quarter I think it is $7.95 per month otherwise. But buying music from them is easy and the format is not proprietary.

  11. ok...y'all hush now I'm gonna ask a question. ok...here it is.

    I have winme and wmp 9. I guess it's called streaming. I don't know.

    I've never done this before.

what do I need to capture music from a video to my hard drive?

can I do this with wmp 9?

can I do this with audacity which I already have?

    I don't want a 30Mb complicated program..make it simple.

  12. What projects do you have on your bench? (for fun, profit or aggravation).

I have been working on a BeBox (BeOS operating system) I started it after a post about a utility machine.

Found a junk PC and now the fun has begun.

I will ad this if you do not have a copy of MADBOOT it is must have for your tool box.

I look forward to hearing the things you are upto.

  15. $500, is way too much, IMO. A system for browsing, email, word and simple games should cost you about $125. Look for a local computer enthusiast magazine in your area - you'll find ads for wholesalers in your area who will sell 5yr old machines for $100 or less.

$500 for a purely utility machine is nuts.

that does include a nice 19 inch lcd. That is a great thing to have for even webbrowsing. If you take off $220 for the moniter, that leaves 275 for a great machine that will be functional for a long time. For just $275 you have a great machine with plenty of ram, fast boot, and can even backup to dvds. Even if you are not encoding video, or playing resource hog games, it is very nice to have. That computer also comes with a nice warranty.

  16. on the buget end I prefer the eMachines T6532. Room to upgrade and a lot of punch.

    http://reviews.cnet.com/eMachines_T6532/45...-2.html?tag=nav

I have alway loved emachines a new Powersupply and a decent GPU and you are ready to frag with 90% of the gamers and the other 10% youwill never beat with out sponsorship anyway. I bought my first years ago as a backup family machine and sfter my Dell failed it became the work horse and never let me down.
