Google up Stardocs.... Seems it does have some problems with other software. I was cautioned against it a few years back when I found it to be a useless resouce hog of empty glitter. Really, what use is it?
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I have to agree with this statment. I tried back when but everytime I installed a program it would mess up. I stopped the would beautifing stuff when I got fed up and got My wife her own PC so I could return to my spartan ways.

There maybe better out there but this one needs no install and if you are like me and keep portable programs on a jumpdrive or MP3 Player it is great. I dLed a ton of WMA files from a Church website the I used a IE plugin ( called Select Links because I was tiring of Right click save as) to copy the URLs to a the clipboard where I used Wackget to DL because of its Foot print. Unfortunatly It renamed some of the file by adding @s and 20s between words 1-4a-renamer quickly removed the and replaced them with spaces. I have tried several renamer in the last couple of week with some disaterous results 1-4a-renamer had zero learning curve I like it. Somebody else might like it also

I could not decide where to put this, but have you had a hard time preventing Kids or you Roomies/ inconsiderate In laws and family from installing P2P/ file sharing programs on Your PC. Try This:
This will not take the place pummelling the crap out of them but it is less painful to the sensitive hand tissue and will at least aggravate them to some degree of what you feel when you tell them no and they do it anyway. I have personally not had any problems but over the years I have had many friends and posters that have. This will probably be no more than a nuisance or a inconvenience to many enterprising youths but may help for many.

if it is a emachine then email emachines and get a new restore disk for a nominal price I have had to do this twice. They then to responed to emails pretty quick. If not you may be able to borrow a copy of Ghost to access the hidden restore Partition. Buying ghost willl coat much more.

I use Google as my Homepage because it is the first place I go when I hit the web so this is great for me.
Me too.
I've just checked it out and it appears pretty cool. Now if Google would come up with a cheap dialup service with web authoring I'd be really . (I'm in the stix... no inexpensive highspeed capabilities )
Thanx Preston !!!

As fast as Google is going ISPism (new term created by me) may not bet far off.

I dont care for it a whole lot. IMO it's not up to par with Hotmail, Yahoo, and others.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Yahoo and Hotmail have too much going on for me. Being in advertising I really don't want to see to much when I'm home.

What do you think of The Google customized homepage feature.

I know this is not a earth shaking topic but just wanted to throw one in the ring.

as Honda_Boy has stated it is no different on a emachine than any other PC. Gain access to the box, unscrew the drive you want to remove, disconnect the ribbon cable (note how it goes in), disconnect the power cable (again note how it goe back together the rule of thumb is the Red wire faces the red stripe on the ribbon cable). then pull it free from the front. In some cases you must remove the front bezel plate but it just snaps off and on.

I don't code anymore either. just to tweak, I never was really good anyway. I use Fireworks, NVU, and even illustrator to avoid having to use to much html.

OK, this has been bugging me all day and I just have to ask.......Why would you want to restart the drivers and everything without physically restarting the computer??? I'm not only nosey but confused (as usual!)....
And...... because this will probably be my next question---we only have one account on this computer--would "logging off" and doing the rest of the steps work? I never tried the "log off" option before. Never had a reason to do it.

Yes you can log off with one account

the best way to learn is to jump right in. I would reccomend downloading ubuntu, it is good for beginners. Linux is differnet then windows, but can do just about anything windows can, but not run programs that were desighned to run on winodows.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
What is "ubuntu'? ..... so that means MS word won't work? Does Linux use something with the same format.
I am writing a book and the publishers want's MS word.
Thank you for your time.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
OpenOffice can save in M$word format
There are program to allow the use of some window based apps. I use Xandro Desktop 3.0 Deluxe (debian base Linux Distro) it came with Crossover Office
So I can install Many adobe (photoshop etc., etc.) Macromedia, and M$ Office
But I have found no reason to do so (except Photoshop and Illustrator).
OpenOffice work just as good as M$ office.
Useless info: Adobe is in the process (if they have not already) of buying the rights to Macromedia's web design tools (dreamweaver, flash, and fireworks)

You're one of those 'never read the manual' type of persons, aren't you?I Can't see why you need to do that? I have never heard of it.Has anyone else?
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Yes I read manuals but we are talking M$ updates here and I have never read that it should be done. As you stated most programs with explicitedly express when it is necessary to disable the AV.

Am having to re-install all programs on a new computer.
I am running Norton Internet Security and wanted to check if it is still important to disable the Norton Anti Virus 2005 during actual installations... as it was with earlier versions of Norton.
If so, I assume this is also true when installing Windows updates?
Will appreciate your time very much. n

Thank you all for taking your time on this topic. I am sold...and am downloading updates now.
I'm sure it was irritating to read that I was even considering the advice, but after what I just went through with the computer I am replacing [after doing all of the right things constantly...Internet Security;3 spyware programs; always updated; no downloading habits of music or anything else], hopefully you would at least semi-understand.
Thanks again! n
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
You won't regret getting updated. one word of advice: beware of phishing schemes microsoft does not email updates so if you get a email from M$ with a link to what appears to be a legit M$ site it is beyond a shadow of a doubt bogus. Do not even open the email just delete it.

A HP disk should not have come with that computer if it was bought new. It seem someone installed WinXP on that PC by using another manufacturers disk. This make me believe this PC was bought used or originally had a different OS. This does not make it eMachines fault.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I agree with this statement. HP/Compaq should have nothing to do with emachines they are owned by Gateway. There is nothing wrong with emachines I like them for entry level they work I have had a few for years. I think someone has tampered with that machine.
Useless info: HP/Compaq are one of the few manufacturers that give you an actual XP CD intead of a recovery disk. And the recovery disk includeds a cool app to intall all hardware drivers.
