  1. I didn't know LEDs were getting so cheap. I used to put fluorescent fixtures above and below the kitchen cabinets for "ambient" lighting, but the CHEAP fixtures available nowadays (cough-CHINA-cough) would burn out too soon and I stopped replacing 'em. Hey, I NEED that light, and I've been tempted to go LED but thought they were still too expensive. Time to go shopping! LED lamp replacement bulbs are becoming available, just $119.00 apiece!
  2. Oh God yes! It's important as all get out. I suspect most people didn't know how "liquidation" works before CC became news. An item that "listed" for $1000 but sold for $800 before they went bankrupt would be listed at 20% off during the liquidation: $800. No savings whatsoever, in fact, you LOSE return privileges, and still pay the original price! It's crazy. I have read first-person accounts that on THE DAY of closing they start giving you REAL deals, but by then all you're gonna get are batteries, cables, and stuff nobody wanted anyway. But hey, if you're looking for batteries and cables
  3. Comparing it to alcohol is not a good argument as we all know that alcohol is exceedingly dangerous, repsonsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of people year after year. By making that comparison you are describing marijuana as being at least somewhat dangerous, and that places the onerous responsiblity on marijuana supporters to define exactly what "less dangerous" means. Not that I support legalization, but I believe you would be better served if you were to defend the product on it's own merits, if any. There's also a problem with the incarceration argument, which could be resolved b
  4. At my current state of knowledge, CRT's, being a mature product, are the most reliable. There's not yet enough information to draw any conclusions about Plasma vs. LCD. There's a lot more that CAN go wrong with Plasma IMO. If anything goes wrong with an LCD it'll likely be the backlight, which if fluorescent isn't a big deal. No one knows for certain about the longevity of LED backlights. Re: LED longevity. I worked in a casino and they eventually replaced all those flashing, twinkling lights with LEDs. Guess what? They go out all the time. I don't know if they "burned out" or if it was a mec
  5. You're makin' my skin crawl man! "It would take a human a very long time to scan the whole area under surveillance if they were looking for something – but this is exactly the type of task which the swarming software we looked at last week excels ... [emphasis added]" Swarming Software? I imagine a day when this type of watchful eye is essentially everywhere. I wonder if those sensors that can detect cameras would be useful for those of us who believe we have a right to know when we're being watched? That's the reason I used a radar detector for decades, not to avoid being "caught"
  6. I have yet to see ANY compelling reason to shop Circuit City's closeouts.
  7. The "axis" remark was a homage to Reagan's "Evil Empire" speech, which actually got results. Are you saying they're not involved in any terrorism or guilty of ruthlessly suppressing their citizens? We get the vast majority of our oil from Canada. No plans yet to invade. Afghanistan is where Bin Laden suppposedly resides and is where the Taliban are concentrated. Do you know what they're guilty of? Arms sales are a touchy subject all right. I wonder how, for example, a teensy po-dunk country in Africa can be armed to the teeth. They can't eat, they don't have clean water, they crap in the st
  8. How did I miss this post? Guess I could comment too: She would find out, as every President has (including Obama; Where's that "openess" he promised? Where's the "immediate withdrawal" he promised? Where're the "middle class tax cuts" he promised?), that the true responsiblities of the office preclude enacting EVERY aspect of their agenda (THANK YOU Founding Fathers). *****
  9. When you get to be MY age it's always: "Man! I gotta pee!"
  10. I'm not entirely sure why, but the term "robotic camera" makes me a bit uncomfortable ... That ultrapixel camera may be obsolete already since they can stitch together thousands of smaller pictures which, while having fewer pixels, are MUCH closer to their subjects when the pic's taken.
  11. CRT's are still the standard for picture quality, but of course are limited in size and, lately, availability. Projection TV's have improved astronomically since I bought mine and they've long since resolved some of the earlier limitations, but projection TV's too are limited in availability lately. I still like 'em 'cause they're the cheapest way to get a REALLY big screen. Ya have to wonder why so many big-name brands are withdrawing from the plasma TV market, like they know something we don't. Or it just could be those brands have simply called it quits 'cause they cannot compete in price
  12. I only have casual knowledge of components (worked at Radio Shack twenty years ago): The larger measurment is the length, the smaller is the diameter. Plugs are "fairly" standardized so there aren't so many different sizes you'd have to specify inside/outside diameters AND the length.
  13. Money aside, this TV is ~twenty years old, it's not HD, it's an old projection set which means the viewing angle is quite limited, this is the second problem I've had ... SURE I'd like a new TV. However, to acheive the same picture height for low-def pictures, of which there are still plenty, I'd have to buy a flat-screen that's over 50 inches diagonal. Even if money weren't an issue, that's a heck of an expensive replacement for a set that still works, and is still considered to be a large-screen TV (though HD pictures aren't IN HD and have black bars, the actual displayed picture, ignoring
  14. Wow, they still sell CRT sets? Or do they pay YOU to take them out of the store? ***** Just FYI, my projection set is CRT-based with R/G/B tubes projecting to a mirror then to a renticular screen. Old school baby! *****
  15. Did you also change your monitor and resolution? Higher resolutions make things appear smaller (unless you increase your monitor size proportionally). I'm not sayin' to lower your resolution, though that would fix this, or to get a larger monitor, which would fix it too, but if you changed to a higher resolution it may take some time to get used to the smaller items onscreen (but it's SO worth it since SO much more fits onscreen).
  16. I find that not HAVING any money solves that problem.
  17. A short time ago I hooked up a digitial converter to my TV and was thrilled to see a far superior picture (and triple the channels, and ....). Ten minutes later, the picture went dim (regardless of the source -- it was the TV that was failing). That's my luck for ya! If I cranked up the brightness and contrast controls I could get a watchable picture. Not great, but not that bad. I have only had this set worked on once in the twenty or so years I've had it and back then they said if it were any older they wouldn't even bother to come out because there wouldn't be any parts to fix it anyway. S
  18. After a decade or so of experience I've learned, through trial and error, what type of entries make sense to delete and what to leave alone, but even then it's possible to get burned (and you better know how to restore what you deleted). If the entry CLEARLY refers to a program no longer on my system, I'll take the chance and remove it. Even then it could be a coincidence that the wording in the entry SOUNDS LIKE the old program, but refers to a new one instead. If I don't FULLY understand what the entry says, it stays. It might seem like that old program, maybe, but I just can't tell for s

You were expecting to get almost 90% of your Federal taxes back? Don't you want to do your part to pay other people's medical bills and mortgages?
  21. When I finished building my first stereo I proudly cranked her up and listened for quite a while to the glorious sound. Umm, my brother-in-law peeped into my bedroom with a stern look on his face -- I forgot he was sleeping. I worked nights when I lived in an apartment so I could crank 'er up all day long 'cause everybody else was toiling away at work. Ha! ***** Yesterday: Johnny Cash (he was also featured in that Dane Cook movie -- guess I'm easily influenced). Today: Assorted Blues songs. ***** So I get an e-mail from the music club with their now typical "Buy 1 Get 4 Free" offer (w

Ooo! Ooo! I have! I have! Let's see, I write malware, get my buddy to "turn me in," Ka-Ching! Collect $250,000! Which I would use to defend myself in court.

I've never been successful in explaining federal tax withholding to anybody, and I don't expect to be successful here, but you did not get "screwed." You got to spend YOUR hard-earned money throughout 2008 (and much of that was documented here). You OVERPAID the U.S. Government by one-hundred-and-fifty dollars! Sure, they returned it to you, but they don't even have the decency to pay interest on the money they took from your paycheck, that you didn't owe them in the first place. I'm gonna keep goin' even though there's no point: Would you rather have had a thousand dollars LESS to spend dur
