  1. I have just the opposite problem, I have enough ideas to keep me busy for 10 years. I have come up with a bunch of projects, maybe I can help. What kind of stuff interests you? How would you rate your skill level? Whats your budget? BH
  2. All mods are welcome, even the additon of decals . When I stated, I started small. A few LED lit fans, a cold cathode or two, some rounded cables. It snowballed from there. It also helps that I to have a love for the creative process. BH
  3. Let me expand on what jsbowen said. Computer careers are demanding. The majority of positions with decent pay are going to entail late nights, unpaid overtime, and stress. The question you need to ask yourself, is it worth it to you? Can you deal with a career where you have to learn something new every few years? If you learn one thing and don't keep up, plan on what you know being virtually useless in 5 years. People who do well in the field who do well are always looking into the newest thing, primarily on their own time. If your interests happen to be tech related, you can get paid v
  4. LOL.... How about an 800 mhz Teddy Bear My Daughter loves this mod, though I am not sure I like the placement of the power cord.... BH
  5. Modding (modifying) is customizing of your computer and other devices to make them suit your style. I have been told that the word comes from the compact car racing scene. For some examples of modded PC cases, you can look at: TechPowerUp Gallery BH
  6. They have vids on the site of actual battles. I don't know if I would have the discipline not to shoot at the drivers... I would probably want to add a ccd and a vid transmitter. I love telepresence... BH
  7. If I only had more time...<sigh> http://www.rctankcombat.com/tanks/T005/ BH
  8. I also had this idea a while back, I saw it as a great way to recover desk space and leg room. One option I considered was mounting the motherboard in a small sound proof case just on the back of the desk, and extending the IDE cable to a solid mounted humidore box sitting just above it on the desktop. This design works well with particleboard computer desks. For a solid desk, you could do the same thing by removing the top drawer and mounting it there. If you decide you really need it in the closet, you have the option of firewire as well as usb. If you don't mind shelling out a little b
  9. I was noticing the disclaimer, and I have to say it gave me a bit of a giggle. Not because it is there, just the sheer irony that during my last mod I ruined a $75 Dual Layer DVD Burner. I would also like to offer my own disclaimer and words of advice, though I am sure that none of you probably need it. Wear safety glasses and other protective gear. When I was younger, you wouldn't have caught me with a pair of safety glasses on. Those careless days ended when my much older brother was using an impact wrench under a rusty car. He ended up with a piece of rusty metal imbeded in his
  10. We now have a modding forum, so I thought it might be a good start to find out what everyone is working on. As for my weekends and free time, I am doing an advanced case mod for a LAN Party machine. It is made out of a plastic composite 25mm cannon ammo case. I have been told this is the 25 MM ammo used on the Bradley. To catch up on what I have done so far, my worklog is hosted at: Jimbo's So what are all of you doing? What are you interested in? etc. TIA, BH
  11. 20 questions, on baseball teams. You are going to want to compile 20 pieces of data data on each team that leads to a unique answer. Let me get you started The logic goes something like this: Ask What league is the team in? (cuts the possibilities in half) Is their mascot an animal? (Eliminates some more) Is the team from the north or south? (Eliminates more) Etc. Etc. Computer prints: You are thinking of <Print team name>. See, computers can read your mind. Get it? BH
  12. Well, we have 12 yes votes. It does relate to the 'mission' of the site. There is a low chance of it creating hate and discontentment. I will send a PM to BT. Thanks! BH
  13. Why yes, yes I could... Dang, now I want to put a printer in a record player. <smack> Bad brain, bad brain! BH
  14. For those of you that don't mod <modify>, it is a hobby of personalizing your electronics, computers, peripherals for fun. What we are asking is: May we set up a forum for the modders here at BestTechie? Thanks for voting! BH
  15. Hey guys, sorry i didn't participate in this thread more. Things got a little crazy at work after the holidays and I had to wander away. Thanks for the complements, it was a fun mod. I really didn't think that there were that many modders here. I am going to set up a thread in chat to see if we have enough people to set up a group here. If you are interested, my new project is being worklogged over at Jimbo's If we cant get something going here, I am sure Jimbo would love to have us over there. BH
  16. AMD is now using a pad. In fact they caution against using grease with the pad. Struck me as weird when I saw that for the first time. BH
  17. Medlab, don't bother with tech support. Help desk jobs often attract the noob techs. Post here, we actually LIKE to help... handplane, I have been watching your new avatar. Isn't your arm tired?... BH
  18. Thanks guys, that did it. I also confirmed the MB type my PS is for. The 20 + 4's are used on 775 p4's the other square p4 conector is used for alot of 478 motherboards. I really don't see a problem in repurposing the extra wires into a new power channel. The links are greatly appreciated, and all bookmarked. I don't really discuss it here, but I am a pretty avid PC modder. Links will come in handy. For anyone who is interested, the PS is the smaller one: And my worklog for the project is posted at: Jimbo's Thanks again! BH
  19. I bought a server PS for a mod project and the MB power cable is a little different than a desktop machine. There are four extra wires going to the MB connector (24 rather than 20), and some unused yellow and black wires going to an additional connector (pentium power I think). I want to scavenge a yellow, two blacks and a red and create a second power channel for additional devices. In the ATX standard the blacks are just labeled as "Ground". Are all the grounds shared between the voltages, or are there 12v grounds, 3.3 v grounds, 5V grounds, etc? I know the risks of working with power suppli
  20. I need an encryption program for my pen drives. I need a program that: 1) Will run from the drive, without the need to install on the machine. 2) Has versions that will work in Linux and Windows. 3) Cheap is good, free is better, open-source gives me the warm and fuzzys. My research so far hasn't turned up any candidates. They all seem to require installation on the Windows machine. I don't have rights to do that on all of the machines I use. Comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated. TIA, BH
  21. All great info, thank you very much. I am just digging into apt-get now and playing with it, before I move on to a survey of the rest of your suggestions. I too agree that people should know how to do the process manually. Although I am a little rusty, I plan on building a few apps this way to get into the swing again. Thanks again, BH
  22. It is hazing, and your school is liable if the teachers know about it. A good lawyer might also make a good case that this is descrimination, since age is a protected factor in some states. When I was in school, it was sticking freshmen in garbage cans. An escallation eventually led to a particulary bright kid wiring a couple of seniors lockers to explode. Luckily no one was hurt, real lucky since it destroyed the locker. Tell somebody, tell everybody, just get it stopped. BH
  23. I found a story about the free VMWare viewer on the web and the free browser appliance. I decided to give it a try as an easy way to use Firefox, since I can no longer tolerate IE.. I am simply stunned, this little Ubuntu distro it is based on is bulletproof so far, and allows me to perform many tasks like SSH, Script editing and web development in an actual Unix environment all from an XP work computer. It even allowed me to install certain sets of programs like composer, evolution, and GLADE to the virtual machine. When I close it, it saves the current state until I start it, so there i
  24. 1) Be a more patient father and husband. With number two on this list, it ain't gonna be easy. 2) Loose the excess weight. I know it isn't very original but with 1/3 of the US population overweight how original could it be? 3) Become a Unix Guru. Frankly, I want to be the go-to guy for Unix in my company. Knowledge is power. 4) Go back to school. I loved school, and I miss it. No sports car for my mid-life crisis, I will just go back to college... BH
