  1. Nice parody... Makes me want to do a lava-lamp out of one. If you want to stay on this theme, make a lighted beta fish tank out of one...<there is a "drink like a fish" joke in there somewhere...> BH
  2. Yes, it would work. I wouldn't cover it with balsa, it isn't that durable. If you aren't extremely interested in looks, you could just mount it in any container. If you go the metal bending route you will eat up a lot of your free time. You can find a ton of plastic containers at the mega stores for very little cash. Heres one that might work from staples: If you are worried about static or RFI, you can coat the inside with aluminum duct seaming tape and ground it with a screw. As for using your TV as a monitor, it doesn't work well unless you have hi-def and a hdmi cable input. I tri
  3. There is a thread in the forum with the link to the power supply project. :ATX to benchtop As for hardware tutorials, there are lots. Here is a google search to get you started: Tutorials And also feel free to search the forums and post questions, this is a very good place for advice, IMO. BH
  4. Good advice so far. You will want to get the quietest fans you can find, it takes surprisingly little noise to mess up a movie. BH
  5. it sounds a little weird, but the yellow and black cables are what you really want. The red and black are 5v and ground, the yellow is 12v. You should take a look at the wiki on creating a bench power supply elsewhere in this forum. A computer power supply needs to see a load to work, so just plugging it in isnt going to get you voltage unless it is plugged into a motherboard. BTW, be very careful working on power supplies, the capacitors hold voltage for years. BH
  6. Thanks, I have been searching for it as "braided hose" rather than what it seems to really be: "Braided Sleeving". Thanks! BH
  7. I am a restrained pack-rat when it comes to components and leftovers. In my leftovers pile I found plastic braided wire cover in various widths scavenged off of a printer I found sitting beside a dumpster a couple of years back. I really like the stuff, does anyone know where I could buy more? For those of you that dont know what I am talking about, look at this: Only smaller in diameter and plastic. TIA, BH
  8. The Aspire is nice. But the x-connects appeal was primarily it price...FREE... I really prefer the external connectors, it reduces clutter when you don't need as many power channels. I noticed we are the only ones posting, but I am fine with it. Modders are a small group anyway, and there are a lot of modding forums on the net. What we need is converts.... I would post more if I wasn't spending so much time actually modding. I haven't updated my work log in a month. This weekends project: Building a power distribution system for the Ammo PC. I have to solder about 40 connections a
  9. I told you guys as soon as I found out, but I found out from digg.com so a million other people saw it. I must have been one of the last to get one, people told me an hour later they were out...Sorry I didn't see it sooner. I got mine the other day, it is pretty nice. Now I just have to find a project to put it in. I have been knocking around the idea of a new lexan case design, so it might fit in there. BH
  10. Congrats! Make sure you use safety glasses. I agree, you want the corded. The cordless works well for really lighty stuff, but if you are doing any heavy work you will lose power before you finish. As for accessories, get the router attachment first and the drill press second if you don't already have one. It gives you better control than just holding it in your hand. It works particularly well if you are going to sand the inside of a port hole or other openings in the case. If you have a little skill, some tools and little cash, you can make your own attachments. I created a custom f
  11. Looks like they are all gone. For reference. this is what they were: http://www.onrebate.com/OfferInfo.aspx?Sea...ode&Val=ul-2284 BH
  12. Don't tell a friend until you order yours : http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.js...oductId=2179650 I am a little skeptical, but it shows that it is free after rebates (2 X $50) Sourced from digg.com BH
  13. Sci-Fi may be a hard sell in the theaters, but for home DVD sales it seems to be doing fine. I don't know about you guys, but I skipped the theater and just picked it up on DVD. That way I have a copy and I can play it on my 55 and not have to worry about some a-hole talking on a cell phone while their kid kicks the back of the seat. I really liked the movie, but I still wonder. What the hell cost 39 million? I didn't see anything particularly ground breaking in the special effects. BH
  14. Pretty neat, it king of has a sim-city look to it. BH

    Oh Yeah

Noted, you are now my official first person to ask for circuit diagrams... BH
  16. Well, if I am not being throttled I soon will be. What is our option? I tried blockbuster, and they were actually slower. They were shipping from NY, and I am close to DC. Also, for those of you who really want new releases, someone pointed out that if you shorten your queue to 3, you get things faster. The person surmised that Netflix would put you higher on the priority for new movies to avoid loosing a customer who was paying for a service and wasn't getting any benefit. Apparently it worked... BH

    Oh Yeah

Jeez, I cant believe I ran into this and wasn't even looking... Throwies BH
  18. Brian_Holiday

    Oh Yeah

LOL. 97 LEDs...Hmmmm I will have to think about that one. BH
  19. Brian_Holiday

    Oh Yeah

COOL! How about posting a pic. I spent the weekend building brackets out of acrylic for the Ammo PC mod I am working on, generally boring stuff. It would help my morale to see something someone else had done... BH
  20. Classic... I think the speaker mod fits firmly into the "ghetto" category. I have a project rolling around in my brain, to make a pc out of fedex boxes... While we are on the subject, check out: Afrotech Mods BH
  21. There is one additinal issue. Often you will get software that is OEM locked to your brand of burner. If the burners are the same model, it souldn't be a problem. Otherwise, you need a full copy of the burning software. Bh
  22. Credit for this one has to go to Martymas. I found it while looking for the whiskey bottle PC mentioned in the other thread. http://www.metku.net If you click the "All the mods" link there are some really nice projects ranging from novice to expert skill level. BH
  23. Man! That is a really nice setup. Your window looks really nice, the sidewinder decal or paint is awesome. You should consider painting the inside, I think that would really make it pop. One additional mod that might make a difference is the addition of carrying handles on the top. They really come in handy if you want to take it to a LAN party... All in all a pretty nice rig. Sure beats the hell out of what is sitting on my desk...lol. At least I didn't go for beige.. BH
  24. The remote switch you mentioned got me thinking. Why not use this: http://www.hobbyengineering.com/H1238.html Then just run a lead to your MB Power switch lead. I haven't tried it, but it looks like an easy project. You might be able to put the touch switch contacts into a cool case. A Hellraiser cube might be nice... One basic project that a lot pf people seem to do is get an old case and spruce it up with paint. For 20 bucks in materials you can make a really nice project. With paint also comes windowing. A little plexi and some door guard 'rubber' from an auto parts store and you ar
