  1. If it's just cutting off I'd bet it's the power supply
  2. Has anyone else been checking out the new proucts for CES 2006? So far the most impressive that I have seen inlcude a Western Digital 150GB Raptor, cheaper technology for wireless laser printers, and my neighbor told me about a WIFI high-gain attenna that is supposed to pick up a quarter mile reception when indoors, and half-mile when outdoors - I do believe I might get one of those for college for some free Internet. Anyone see anything else that's pretty impressive?
  3. Such a random feature! (but I still want to use it for some reason)
  4. I'd check Windows Updates - I reloaded Win98SE on a computer and MSN.com - the default homepage - would freeze up Windows EVERYTIME i loaded it. I just went through the programs list and pulled up the link straight to Windows Update, loaded about 40-50 things (I'm sure one fixed some IE problem) - and that solved the problem.
  5. Update - I bought Python programming for the Absolute beginner - preogressing about a chapter every 2 days or so trying to "burn in lessons" as someone said. Right now I have enough knowledge to write simple programs to complete math/science equations. It's amazing - you type raw_input("\n\nPress Enter to Exit") and you have it memorized!
  6. How much will you pay me to rent a FBI costume, fly to your house, and recover your files?
  7. How much better can sound be with a $120 card? I mean honestly
  8. Contrary to public belief - I feel fine using integrated sound with my three speakers and sub - even if it does use CPU processing on the sound
  9. I got a Logitech MX Laser for $40 - it is cordless and recharges into the signal base along with a cheap but nice keyboard
  10. Hello, I am setting up my network either this evening or tomorrow and I want to have my Network Places (consists of one folder with other folders in it) to be password protected. There is one other computer in my house (on the same workgroup) that can access the files, but I would like a password prompt to come up whenever the folder was accessed.
  11. My system (in sig) cost me around 1300 American. That includes an additional keyboard, a nice Logitech mouse, and wireless adaptor. You can easily get a good system for that price range - might I recommend the AMD X2 3800, it's the lowest level of AMD's dual core processors, but it handles games and will last for a while - I love it!
  12. No, he meant the dissaperance of some of your RAM is because your onboard video is sharing it. 2x512 Ram is 1024 - and since it is reading 960 your onboard video is stealing 64MB of RAM. That is one of the benefits of an additional video card. I would recommend a 6800GS video card - I got a eVGA one, they are awesome and they are down to around $195 now
  13. Python it is then. I'll be ordering that book then - Thanks everybody!
  14. Is Phython useful? I wouldn't mind investing time into C++ because I'm trying to learn something useful. I've been reading Amazon.com reviews and I am thinking in investing in the C++ Primer (5th Addition) According to the synopsis and reviews it covers everything for beginners and is a good jump into C++
  15. I'm not sure about the next big thing, but I think I can pick it up quickly if it's like anything else. My boss (at a computer repair/build store encouraged me to start learning coding) Microsoft Visual Basic, as far as I know, is the progam that converts the coding into a .exe program so its actually useful
  16. You can reset the CMOS easily by moving jumper or by flipping over your CMOS battery and leaving it for about a minute to short the current - leaving you with your default settings
  17. DVD Shrink can be used to backup your dvd's if you have a copy of NERO (a DVD burning software) I believe you can use DVD Shrink with the demo version of the latest version of NEO - I know it works with the full version of NERO 6 (it came with my burner) You can watch DVD's with a program such as Power DVD or Interactual Player
  18. To be more specific - what are some good books that I could read to begin learning programming? (such as the For Dummies series)
  19. Hello everybody, I have the intent on learning programming (to learn a new and useful skill and/or to narrow down a potential for a college major) I have never worked with any coding, with the exception of simple HTML, so I need to know what type of coding I need to learn and what the best way to learn it is. Thanks in advance!
  20. Finally posted these pics - system specs are in my sig
  21. Whenever I started my build on my current PC I warmed up the soldering iron and hot glue gun before I even started b/c I knew I would break a few things Turns out I only busted two clips on my case front panel
  22. Amen - I trust Aspire, Cooler Master, Thermaltake, and a handful more - don't get cheated on a crappy power supply On the show Call for Help - Leo talked about how cheapy Taiwanese power supply companies will produce about 1000 PSU's and then test to find one rated at 300W so they can sell them all rated for 300. So stick with brand names. By the way, what type of RAM did you get?
  23. Go get me $20 in cables and 5 rolls of tin-foil - i'll cover them REAL NICE!
