  1. Well, I prefer to have a second system which I do not mind messing up to use as a "testbed" for when I want to try new software or experiment with registry edits or other dangerous things. I have a ghost image on a networked drive so I can restore and try again if I mess it up to badly . As for may main systems, well I tend to be cautious with them; but I make sure I have my data backed up just in case. Got an Epson PSC (Print scanner copier - all in one) to look at (not mine, I loathe all in ones) . The lights by the ink tanks are out , so I suspect that the electronics are shot. It makes
  2. Personally I hate it. If the OL did not make me put them up I would not. One year we were the first on the block to have them up and had just had a travel trailer delivered and it was parked in the driveway. I experienced my first home invasion robbery that night; five masked punks with sawed off shotguns ransacked my house looking for cash we did not have and stole my wallet and credit cards. Fortunately I keep a scan of them all along with the 800 numbers in several places (both in digital format and print) . But it was a real bother cleaning up afterwards and dealing with getting all the ca
  3. They do that a lot here too, but the really do pull you over. It is illegal to give cops "Ticket Quotas" but they get points towards their performance evaluation based on the number and dollar value of tickets written. So if you want to get a promotion or make up for a goof or just not get canned as a slacker you have to write a bunch. The interesting thing is that they blatently target the offenders who appear to be able to pay; a new Cadiallac or Mercedes or a customized car with gold rims is much more likely to be pulled over than a clunker with rust holes . Not to say they won't go after
  4. I think that what I was attempting to point out (at least subconsciously) was the importance of descriptive sensory input. is the only image and sensory aspect in the oringinal excerpt. Both the God and watcher come across as totally vague, and the caveman and setting are entirely undeveloped. Yes, both my examples likewise would need embellishment; but they are a first draft, and unless you are one of the truely great authors of all time you need to do repeated rewrites of your work (when I once fancied myself as a potential Scifi author , I did at least ten drafts for each short story and
  5. I think that the big item here is not just the huge potential storage per disk, but more important the speed at which it can be read . This reduces the need for buffering or caching of data. Since it is written and read in "blocks" as opposed to individual bits of data you get much more efficient read and write.
  6. Same here in Texas. You have to move over and slow to 20MPH below the speed limit when you see an emergency vehicle; and that includes the Department Of Transportation Roadside assistance vehicles which stop to help folks with things like flat tires.
  7. Not meant as a hijack, but the theme of this thread got me thinking so here is a stream of consciousness. I am oort, known as the most worthless of the clan; it is doubtful that I will ever get a woman even the starving bucktoothed halfwit. I am lucky to be allowed to keep my wretched life. If it were not for the leader I would long ago have been leopard food or starved and been eaten by the carrion birds we use to find old kills to scavenge. I am smaller than the others, more a hindrance than an asset in the clans search for food. If it were not for my skill at making sharp rocks , the leader
  8. I awoke drenched in sweat despite the prediction that it would be an early freeze. The airconditioner droned louldly in the silence of the night, and I suddenly realized I must have a fever. I tried to get up and terror gripped me when I could not move my legs, a heavy weight pressed on my chest. I must be having a heart attack something screamed in my mind, I tried in vain to move an arm. Panic clutched at the breath in my thoat as I fought to call for help. Then one of my dogs licked me on my face, another shifted off my chest and finally my legs were free. I tossed back the blankets and
  9. Proven to work on colds is vitamin C combined with Zinc Gluconate ; generally available in tabs, often with ecinacea. Something about the combination slows the cold virus ability to enter cells. Just as with the avian flu, most of the problem from colds results from damage caused an overreaction by the immune system. In a viral infection stage 1 is for the white cells to detect and kill viruses for analysis. This happens almost immeadiately and is characterized by a low fever. Then the second response of the immune system is what causes problems. The immune system targets infected cells with

READ1ST" Note that it is a lot of pages, and links to others http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/19244 "ISO/BIN answers" Note that this shows how to write the needed cue file if all you have is bin. The ISO is the combination of the bin and cue
  11. As for a seperate partition for the page file, while some versions of windows benefitted from this; windows XP when installed on an NTFS partition and using the built in defrag based on diskkeeper does not. It will place the various components, including the pagefile for optimum performance without you doing anything. As for why you would want to partition; have you ever tried to do a thorough scandisk of 200GB? Or even a defrag or full virus scan of say 40GB of data? It takes forever. And you can't just pause something like that and resume tomorrow. So by partitioning your drive you can kee
  12. Yesterday when I went out to check black friday sales, I saw several places at $1.99. Probably a response to reports that the high price of gas was going to discourage holiday spending. The big oil companies do not want to be seen as spoiling Christmas (remember the trouble it caused Newt Gingrich the year the Gingrich stole Christmas - he got investigated by the press until they dug up enough dirt to oust him). Once the holidays are past, they will find a reason to raise prices again (those bad northerners are using to much heating oil , we absolutely have to raise the price of gas now). I
  13. Actually, my opinion of ecinacea remains that it is overblown and misrepresented. Based on trying different brands, I conclude that it is the combination present in the Celelstial Seasonings Ecinacea complete which actually is effective. Probably the eucalyptus or something else in combination helps with pain. As for skin problems, my wife is diabetic (now fully under dietary control) but when she was having skin problems from it, she found this stuff called diapedic cream to be even more effective than the eucerin product. It is over the counter at walgrens and available online. http://www.
  14. I saw on the news that they had near riots . In one place they had a fight break out when one guy was throwing them over the crowd to his friends; and another where a cop maced everyone when they seemed out of control. Personally , It is not worth it. My theory is if it falls into the "buy it now or not at all" catagory , I can live without it. I hate sales pressure (buy it now) , there are plenty of other places which have similar offers and most have more in stock and do not have a five hour time limit . http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_...oduct_id=214681 For example. $659 with t
  15. Also in theory, the next windows update will include sony rootkit removal tool in the malicious software automated removal . Although given the dangers involved in having this on your system if you know how to follow grinlers steps and you know you are infested you should not wait.
  16. Yeah, I just love it how all to many doctors diagnose things based on what is the latest pet medicine the pharmaceutical companies are promoting. I took zantac and prilosec for years since they insisted my pain had to be "heartburn" as JDOORS said. My wife was likewise diagnosed as having heartburn until she had a massive heart attack and needed a triple bypass. That was why I went to a heart specialist (Cardiovascular and pulmonary intervention specialist that is) when the pain kept getting worse. Thankfully my insurance backed me up on that one. And thankfully he was competent enough not
  17. Do not overlook that the Fix a Flat is designed to be a temporary fix at best. It contains propane as a propellant and a liquid rubber compound which solidifies on contact with oxygen. It is not strong enough to make a permanent patch, only to seal around a nail or similar long enough for you to get it properly patched. Make sure to warn the repair shop that you used fix a flat so they make sure the employee who lets out the air is not smoking (propane has a nasty habit of exploding when it comes in contact with a hot cigarette or source of open flame). Sorry to hear about the arthritis, bu
  18. No, you use something like alcohol 120% to combine the bin and cue to form the iso and mount it to the virtual drive which alcohol 120% creates and then you can just burn as a copy from the virtual drive.
  19. Because an AVI is not a type of CD or DVD. An ISO is an file image of a CD or DVD which can be mounted to a virtual drive or burned as an image to the disk itself. So you need to convert the AVI file to a VCD format or to DVD format (where you have data and format files which are combined to form the image or burned file). With AVI , I used to use something like AVI2VCD , but now most burner programs like Nero and EasyDVD have this built in, you can select an AVI and choose burn as VCD and they will transcode automatically. Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to all. Roasting a 25 pounder tommorrow. Remember, cranberry sauce is a sauce, not a dessert. You warm it up and use it to pour over the turkey just like you put apple sauce on a pork roast. Gravy is made from pan drippings and served on rice or potatoes. This being the south, it is cornbread dressing. Dressing replaced the term stuffing when the British decided that stuffing had to much of a sexual connotation. OL wants to go shopping so I probably have to go.
  21. I paid $2.04, but it is $1.99 and below outside the city. But that is twenty miles in any direction so you spend more than you save.
  22. They just started selling Steel Reserve Lager http://www.steelbrewing.com/home.html (8.1% alcohol , double the hops of normal beer) for $4.99 a twelve pack at The Beverage Depot down the street. My wife likes it. It really tastes strongly of hops, a definite lager. If you click on downloads, it has some of their ads in wmv and mov format. Check out the two beside the rhinos humping.
  23. What does the BSOD say? I see that you say you can boot successfully if you run a system restore, but that on reboot you again have the problem. This would indicate something (virus, adware etc) is changing things and the altered system gets stuck in the boot loop. So, you should probably run the online antivirus scans, run adware / spybot , a squared etc and see what you can find.
  24. Google is your friend and much more can be learned there ; but here is a simple view of things. First off, in the early days, most hard drives were serially connected through SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) . This was a serial interface where you could connect from one drive through to another and another in a chain.Initially there was a limit of 8 devices on a chain (with the controller itself counting as one ) but it is now commonly 127. Then along came ATA or IDE drives. The normal 40 pin connectors on your motherboard are PATA or Parallel ATA (Advanced Technology Attachment) conn
  25. There are two components you need ; the bin is the binary data file, the other half of the equation is the cue file which contains the needed format information. Then you can use a program such as alcohol 120% to combine the bin and cue to form and iso image file which you can burn as an image to dvd and have a playable dvd.
