    First Cookout

Had the first cookout of the season Sunday. On Saturday we made a ten pound chuck roast with potatoes, carrots, and cabbage (New England Boiled Dinner) and had the boys , grandkids and a few neighbors over. That went down so well and the weather was so beautiful that I figured sunday was time to break out the grill. Perfect weather in the eighties. They had chicken leg quarters on sale for 19Cents a pound so that had to be a sign. Ten pounds of Chicken legs, Ten pounds of hamburgers , Ten pounds of Potato salad and baked beans (Not to mention ten two liter bottles of soda and three cases of

    Bird Flue

Well, back when they first had the West Nile Virus spreading through bird populations in the US ; I said there was a simple solution. Allow and encourage the total extermination of migratory birds. In fact, this could be used as a reason to exterminate such economic problems as the the Spotted Owl and all those wood grouse and sparrow birds which are hindering developement. Tackle the problem at its roots, eliminate the vectors of transmission. Or just wait; the wild populations will die off on their own and eventually develope immunity and recover (the west nile at first seemed to have kil
  3. I just do not like all the things it disables after thirty days if you do not buy it. Kind of leaves you with a false sense of its capabilities after you get used to them , and they silently dissappear. Most users would never notice them go missing and that is a ba Snapfiles search lists several http://www.iopus.com/guides/free-firewall.htm http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/download.php
  4. Just use a powered USB hub and plug it into that . When you want it off, unplug the transformer; or put it on a switch.
  5. It has been in the eighties all week here in Texas. Had springtime big thunderstorms the night before last. Lows have been record high lows (Mid to upper sixties). The elms, ashes, and mulberries are all leafing out . Daffodills have pretty much past. We had a warm January and then a hard frost so most of the blossoming trees (Arizona Ash, plum, apple and pear, redbud ) lost at least half their blooms. The tulip trees and dogwoods were in full bloom when the frost hit and lost everything. The arboretum is in full bloom and having a festival this weekend. Yep spring is here.
  6. DANGER DANGER WILL ROBINSON. It is very dangerous to ever add "delete from server" to a message filter rule in an email client. This is because to run the filter the message must first be downloaded. This type of rule "CAN" cause your email client to lock up and refuse to open. If you wish to delete from server prior to downloading; you need to use something like mail washer. Doesn't your antivirus detect this worm? Change the setting to clean and tell me to "Delete automatically" and "no notice"
  7. I can't resist It could be a fluctuation in power causes the bios to think there was a power failure and it is set to restart on rusume from power failure. Check the bios setting. Unplug your LAN (ethernet) and Modem . There are wake on lan and wake on ring (modem) settings which can be disabled if you find one of them is the cause. I would also say check your motherboad documentation to see if it has wake on keyboard. I had one that did and my siamese cat kept turning it on in the middle of the night. It could be a short on the motherboard or a bad power supply too. Do you have any proble
  8. an 8MB video card ? Well of $2.99 I guess you can't lose. This is an old AGP 1.0 AND 2x card often the voltage on these is different than 4x and 8x cards and if you put it in a 4x or higher slot it will fry and may take the motherboard with it. Do you currently have the TNTM64? This is a 32MB AGP 4x card http://support.gateway.com/s/VIDCARD/Visio...600123108.shtml This is the one you have now or should I couldn't find the voltage specs for that one But would not be surprised if it is the old one which is not compatible with new slots. Ahh, here it is http://www.directron.com/15agpguide.ht
  9. Darn you scared me there jeff. I thought I had lost a month somewhere along the line. Had to check the clock in my system tray to be sure.
  10. You can also use cryptainer mobile to install an encrypted secure storage area if you want even more security. Probably several other options. You could have one FTP folder with one name and password for her and set as a mapped drive on her computer and another for you and yours and you can access either over FTP from anywhere on the net. I like the SMC Barricade, ever since I found out that it has a built in no-ip.com , and dydns.org and a couple other dynamic dns services client . No need to even have a PC check in to update it if you go on vacation or if they change your IP while you are
  11. 1. You pay for it, it never comes and you find out you have no recourse against a vendor in Russia. 2. You order it, it arrives and you find it is the Mandarin Chinese OEM version. 3. You order it, it arrives and you find it is an OEM promotional version which expires in thirty days and then you have to buy a full license to access your files. 4. You order it, get it and then start seeing mysterious charges appear on your credit card. By the time you get through canceling the card and disputing the charges you find you have a three year battle to clear your name and get new credit.

    Virus Outbreak

And most of these virus hoax emails are started by spammers who use them to collect the email addresses of those who forward them. After all if you are gullible enough to fall for and believe this you may be interested in all kinds of offers.

    Computer Protection

What really concerns me is that after scanning 1056 ports they declare you to be invulnerable when there are 65535 ports . http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers What if someone tries to get in on one of the ports that this program is ignoring? By my count you are 1.6% protected and 98.4 % potentially vulnerable. Some to worry about 3939/tcp Anti-virus Application Management Port 3939/udp Anti-virus Application Management Port 3955/tcp p2pCommunity 3955/udp p2pCommunity 4672/tcp remote file access server 4672/udp remote file access server Let you search through and look .
  14. Well, no real building, just minor assembly. I think they both work USB2.0 as well as network. Just buy the drive and box and put em together and put it back in the box. Nice if you have a need to access files from work ; no need to put em on flash drive or leave your pc on and run server software . Just save the files there and put on a username / password for access. The weird thing is that all the preassembled NAS I looked at none of them have this internet accessibility.
  15. Thats pretty much what I tell Comcast when they keep calling to try to get me to sign up for cable internet. They say this conversation may be recorded; I say is it , I want it to be and I want someone to review this. I then spend a good five minutes telling them how when it gets hot in the Texas Sun and a line amp overheats and I try to get a tech out while it is still hot enough to trace; that customer service tells me there is no record of a problem and sends a tech out three days later early in the morning when nothing is hot and no problem exists. I tell them about all the drop outs in d
  16. Marty She settled for a 4.5 star hotel in Manhattan, NY for a weekend and a New Dooney & Bourke purse wti matching wallet. (did you know you have to register a purse?) The purse alone cost me $400. Before you all call me hen pecked (though no hen has lips like my wife {this how we got 6 kids}) This is a combo gift she finishes her MBA this week so I promised her a trip the purse was a bribe. Preston Sure you aren't up to building something ? Pretty simple, just four screws, two cables to connect. Same effort as installing a new drive. Check out my post here about NAS with built in FTP,

  18. Fairly common for Educational facilities to get these for distribution to students studying the OS. The idea is that they can install this on a spare drive and use it to learn the OS while taking the course at school where the school paid for a number of seats. I got one of the six month trial versions of Win2k server this way. As noted, after the 180 days; the computer will not boot and you have to repartition and format and install a new OS.
  19. One of the things I have noticed over the year is that free subscriptions rarely continue for the duration. I had free one year subscriptions to PC magazine and a few others. I doubt I got over half the issues. But since I did not pay anything to get them , I didn't complain. However, I do agree with you that you should let them know how you feel both via email and snail mail. And make it clear that you feel that you have been treated unfairly and that you did not recieve the offer you thought you were getting . Make it clear that you feel you are due some compensation since this was your pri
  20. I grew up in New England, went to college in Taxachusetts and all I can say is I sure am glad I do not live in the wild northland. It was 85 here on thursday, but we had a sudden cold front and it dropped to the forties yesterday and thirties today. They were direly predicting freezing rain and sleet; but it has failed to materialize since the air is so dry here as usual. Looking forward to a return to the sixties in a couple days.

    Oil Leaks

Generally when it leaks down the side; it is leaking from the valve cover gasket. It dried out or the screws were overtightented. You can just remove the bolts and lift the valve cover and pull out the old gasket and put on a generous amount of RTV silicone caulk. Set the cover on evenly and put in the screws but do not tighten. When it has cured overnight; tighten them to about ten or fiften foot pounds (snug but not to tight) . No more leak. The problem here in Texas is that the morons passed a law that any product containing PseudoEphedrine must be dispensed by a pharmacist and kept in th

    Oil Leaks

Yeah, I used to prefer Actifed; but cannot find it around here any more. In Texas, anything with Pseudoephedrine in it must now be stored in the pharmacy with controlled substances. You have to wait in line and get it from the pharmacist and are limited to two one week dosages. Some moron thinks this will stop methamphetamine production; it just makes it nearly impossible for the average congested person to get relief. They now have PE (Phenyl Ephrine, the stuff they pulled off the market ten years ago because it is virtually useless and increases the risk of stroke and heart attack markedly)

    Oil Leaks

The brand? Tech something; the Walmart brand. Never again . I hate oil leaks, bad for the environment as well as making it hard to spot other problems and causing dirt and hence water and rust to accumulate. Hadn't had so much as a drop of leakage until this happened. To really top things off, I have had allergies or a head cold all week and decided to try Loratadine-D this morning. I still haven't been able to get to sleep. One more on the Never again list. It did clear my sinuses nicely and stopped the post nasal drip ; but I have been trying to get to sleep for over six hours now and

    Oil Leaks

Got off the freeway this afternoon and as I slowed to a stop at the access road intersection I smelled oil and saw a cloud of blue smoke. "Gee someone has a bad oil leak " I thought. Went on down the road and that cloud seemed to be following me . Suddenly my oil pressure started bouncing to zero and back. "Gee , I have a bad oil leak " I thought. Pulled over and saw a bunch of oil dripping under my truck. Popped the hood and there was oil everywhere but I couldn't be sure of the source. To make a long story short, I eventually learned that the oil filter gasket had split in half. I guess I s
  25. Finally some rain here. Nothing serious, no thunderstorms or downpours; but since this is the first real rain in at least five months; probably longer it is welcome. Of course now the OL will complain that the dogs are wet and smelly and have muddy feet. That and it is cold and damp which after all those months of warm dry weather really causes scars and joints to hurt. Doubt it will last long, but hey thats weather.
