  1. I like my extensions. So Far, I got I use about twice the extensions, have about 10 tabs open constantly and am almost always downloading something. I am running at 227MB right now for FF. I have 1.5gb of RAM though so I don't care. Check tools/ options/ privacy/ cache see how much memory you have allocated to caching web pages etc.
  2. You could encrypt the whole thing with something like Powercrypt http://powercrypt.ovsoft.com/ (I think that is the one) http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/Removable...ivedefense.html http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/lockngo/lockngo.html Freeware??? http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/Cryptaine...cryptainer.html http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/BladeBox_...n/bladebox.html does 30MB For files? http://www.rtsoftware.org/
  3. Probably so. Whines usually mean a bearing with a flat spot catching . This only gets worse until one day it locks up.
  4. Last night I was online when all of a sudden my OL bellowed "Why are my lights and tv off." I suddenly realized, that since I had everything here on UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supplies for thoe who are unfamiliar, battery backups) even a couple lights and the TV; that I had missed the fact that the lights had gone out in the rest of the house. I quickly powered down and explained that she had a UPS on the computer and light beside it in the bedroom too. I went outside and found the whole block and more were without power. Next thing I knew there were firetrucks converging a block over so I
  5. Here in Dallas, 2005 was the driest year since 1956, and before that 1899. No real rain since sometime in september or october. Still no rain, humidities tend to be below 10% temperatures in the seventies and eighties with a dew point in the low twenties. They keep saying "chance of rain in the forcast, stay tuned for the five day " only to say it is a minimal chance and the air is so dry that any rain will evaporate before it can hit the ground. Ranchers are at the point where they will have to buy hay or sell their stock or both. We have multiple grass fires burning hundreds of acres each
  6. Yeah, I tried diet big red with splenda and it tasted positively foul. On the other hand, the Diet Rite white grape is excellent, as are the Diet Rite and RC Diet sodas. The new diet berry Seven-up with splenda is also good in my opinion. That is the point. This rumor has been circulating and the National Instititute of Health decided to confirm it. Instead they found out that the exact opposite is true. That people were being fed false information about the danger of diet sodas.
  7. In the cases they showed on the news they mailed a copy of Turbo Tax or Tax Cut software , packaged like an AOL CD with the recipients name and address and social security number on the front (Outside mailing label). Therefore it could be read and copied by anyone in the postal service, anyone who went through your mail in the box, anyone at whatever subcontractor H&R used to send all this out , as well as anyone who moved into your old address and recieved it (I think they said the label said "or current occupant " so the post office wouldn't waste time trying to forward it).
  8. Basically splenda is normal sugar (Glucose) which has one hydroxyl (OH) molecule replaced with a Chlorine (Cl) atom. Borden had been cleaning a sugar refinery in Florida with hot super chlorinated water and someone resumed production without first flushing the system. The first batch out was this bizarre puffy substance . They decided they better test it to make sure it was not toxic before resuming production and thus splenda was discovered. The main result of this is that the crystals are much larger and less dense. But it has a comparable (although slightly more like caramel or brown sugar
  9. The scary part is that if you have moved since you last used them, they send it to your last known address so that who knows whom got it and now knows your social security number and name . All they need to open all kinds of things in your name .
  10. I hate nutrasweet with a passion; but to me splenda tastes just like sugar (well maybe a bit of a hint of chlorine like over chlorinated city water ). Since my wife is diabetic and needed to loose the weight after her heart attack and bypass all we buy now is diet with splenda. We even buy the bulk splenda for cooking and it is quite satisfactory in things like cobbler, cornbread , muffins, cakes and cookies.
  11. It really depends on what you are trying to clear out of your mind. If it is not depressing, just tiring; then a couple good stiff bourbon and cokes tend to get me focused on something else. But when it comes to depressing events or memories; I find that mindless physical labor which requires careful attention are best. Dissassembly of an engine block, hand pruning a hedge, building something out of wood; these are all good physical therapy to clear the mind and get it to stop focusing on something . Other times a good engrossing novel or a long walk in the country or a park with a chance to d
  12. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_28945.html I wonder if they could break this down into diet soda with splenda, those with aspartame , and those with acesulfamine. Of course the fact that drinking one non diet soft drink a day will add fifteen pounds per year to the average person could just mean that obesity is the culprit.
  13. Actually I have several rolls within ten feet of myself now. Silver, red, green (olive drab actually). Two inch and three inch wide , mostly 60Yard rolls. Duct tape and super glue the handymans helpers. I actually temporary fixed my filtered water dispenser with superglue after some idiot guest over the holidays thought you turned it on by grabbing the spout and bending it rather than by turning the handle. Sure, I'll buy a new one and replace it , but just can't find the right one. I have used duct tape to hold together and seal a cracked window until I can get the new glass . For years
  14. TOOooo Sounds like a blast. Ill have to hit that place up one day. Go to the Canton trade days in the morning and to the Dallas computer trade days in the afternoon. You know, that "outfit" might make a good halloween costume Normally the computer sidewalk sale starts pre dawn and closes around noon , or maybe a little later if there is demand. Optimum time is generally around 9-11Am.
  15. Quite accidentally. I was really kind of amused to see myself and realize what I looked like. The computer fest here is held under a freeway , year round twice a month (First and third saturday of every month) and is free admission (the vendors pay the rent) . http://www.3rdsaturday.com/ It is under a twelve lane freeway, and covers about two blocks , and it all looks like what is in those pictures. Lots of fun talking geek and bargaining for what you want.
  16. Do we have any Red Green fans here? Remember Red's nephew Harold? Well , this morning I was thinking of going to the first and third saturday computer fest , swap meet and sidewalk sale downtown. It has been fairly warm lately and incredibly dry (dew point below 20 and humidity at about 9%), but was cool last night and the OL had the Air conditioning set to 68 (with that dry air it feels like 58 to me).So I had thrown on an old flannel shirt which had shrunk so the arms were to short and to keep the waste tucked in I had to hike up my jeans and fasten them tightly with a belt. I had on a whit
  17. I have these preinstall cds for many OS , including XP . They do not include the OS. What they do have is tools for customizing XP so that you can burn an OEM install CD if licensed to do so. They are designed for computer builders (like DELL) as well as shops which buy say a thousand OEM operating system licenses a year and want to have the OS customized for their systems. With this, you can edit the installer so that it displays your splash screen during boot, includes a driver files pack with the drivers for your line of computers ,and a lot more. Most specifically, they can be used to alter
  18. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/MS06-001.mspx For the info and download links if you do not get it from automatic update. Note that since win98 and ME are no longer supported OS, microsoft choose not to patch them at this time since no current exploits targeting them exist. For users of those systems unregistering the DLL is still the best approach. Go to start / run and type regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll hit enter For XP users who already did this , once patched you can go there and type regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll To reactivate it.
  19. [ Microsoft released the patch for Win2k and Win XP on thurdsay jan 05 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/MS06-001.mspx Win98 and ME the update is not considered critical since there are no exploits targeting those older OS yet; so since they are beyond their life cycle microsoft choose not to patch them at this time. For those, unregistering the DLL is the best option.
  20. http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/index.php?p=143&tag=nl.e589 Lots of bad advice for critical WMF vulnerability! Looks like unregistering the dll is the most effective defense for now. Also looks like the patch will be released next week. Also the paid version of A squared, with background guard will detect and block the exploits.
  21. http://blogs.technet.com/jesper_johansson/.../02/416762.aspx Fostering a false sense of security by installing a rootkit is worse than doing nothing. It is far better you take the approach suggested by this senior microsoft security expert while waiting for him to finish writing and testing the patch. You should do this for each browser you use to go wild. As well as your default image viewer.
  22. Personally I am just glad to have the responsibility for those boards off my shoulders. I think that it is a combination of folks leaving (I still visit occaisionally , but do not spend any where near the time I used to ; I have new boards I frequent now) for greener pastures; those who remain getting tired of constantly being told that the board is going to close and the show be canceled (hey that is enough to fray anyones nerves ) and as mentioned a lack of moderation. I do not say a lack of moderators; but rather the rules they are now under severly restrict their actions. Those who were w
  23. Yes, but won't this approach fail to ghost the boot sector? You will have to do a repair install or fix it from the recovery console (XP). If you ghost the entire drive it would just resize the partitions. No need to partition and format in this case.
  24. \ Have you loaded the tabbed browsing extension Go to tools/ extensions/ get more extensions Get tabbrowser preferences It will add another tab to tools/ options Lets you change links and popups to new tab and more. Or Right click should also give the open in new tab option. Ctrl+left click opens in new tab Shift+Left click opens in new window
  25. Backweb was probably the first of the advertiser spyware. Basically, it let computer makers (or in some cases software providers) know what programs and hardware you had installed on your computer so that they could "suggest" new products you could buy from them. For example, say you tried to open a .zip file and you did not have a zip manager installed (No longer an issue with XP, but common back in the win98 days) . The next thing you know a window from product support would pop up suggesting you buy Winzip from the maker of your computer. It is doubtful that they maintained any database on
