  1. The big problem with calling something "Global warming" is that without it the Earth would be at its natural albedo temperature, well below freezing, it would be a snowball from the poles to the equator (it has done this in the past, causing almost all life to die off ). In fact, statistically, the current weather globally is well below the norm. But this does not mean that it will result in higher high temperatures. In general what "global warming" has done in the past is result in higher low temperatures. This means that the poles do not get as cold in the winter, that it does not cool off a
  2. Well, you are the one who had to reinstall windows , right? I wouldn't do something like this just to save a few seconds on shutdown time . Yes, the windows default settings are conservative and there is some leeway before you will have problems, but why take the chance?
  3. From FARK http://www.fark.com/ http://www.winterson.com/2005/06/episode-i...of-west.html#ha Chinese "Revenge of the Sith" subtitles include Anakin as a member of the Presbyterian Church This shows the errors of translating from one language to another and back. Some really hilarious interpretations of what Star Wars is all about
  4. Here is a tip. At G4, when you reach your PM limit, choose export and save it to a file . It will save as pmexport.txt. YOu just put in a date like 082405pmexport.txt. It will save all your PMs as a single text file , very small. You can check the box "delete after export " and it will save them to your hard drive and it will erase them there leaving a clear PM box to refil.
  5. Possibly, after all, something which tells windows to wait while it saves data and settings, is not being given as long a time to finish its task before windows kills it outright. So some things may be lost or corrupted by doing this. In XP, shutdown is very important , because it saves your profile, all the settings and data related to your preferences and operation of your account to hive (.hiv) files which are used to build the new registry when you boot up next time. Corrupt one of them and you wind up with one of those " Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or
  6. Ah, oh well. I thought you were having an issue related to it. That was why I gave the link. You really should post this in the Malware section. You have messenger plus which installs coolwebsearch trojans O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "C:\Program Files\MessengerPlus! 3\MsgPlus.exe" Uninstall it with add/ remove programs and then have hijackthis fix that entry. Looks like you are not infected, but it will infect you again if you leave it. 7. It reminds me of one of the Macintosh amps we used for the refrigerator size speakers we had in our apartment back in college.
  8. Makers Mark? That is almost as bad as Jack Daniels. I like a good Kentucky Straight Bourbon, none of that Tennessee crap. The water and wood are much better in Kentucky.
  9. Speaking of hot sauce, I made some Smoked Hatch Chili, habanero, chipotle sauce with Wasabi. Truely tasty and makes what little hair I have stand on end. The OL refuses to even try it, but the new pup thinks it is great ( I guess that makes her a Chili dog) . I made a "hot Pastrami" sandwich which was hot in more ways than one, with chinese mustard (home made) and my Chili sauce . Clears the sinuses, tears the eyes and gives you a real craving for some whiskey to wash it down.
  10. The board chops the url Just put the clsid into the search at google and it is the first hit. Try this one http://www.spywareinfo.com/toolbars/
  11. I tried as you said above but there is no subfolders after the asterik nor is there any ones called shell in classes. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Open notepad Copy the contents of this quote Now choose file / save as INCLUDING the quotes put "Shell.reg" in the file name and All files as the file type and Desktop as the location. Now you will have shell.reg as a file on your desktop. Double click it and it will merge the value into your registry and you will have open with as an option.
  12. In otherwords, she is willing to pay $450 and you are going to put together a $250 system, install a copy of win98, an older OS (and is it already installed on a computer? Remember, one copy one computer you cannot legally install it on another unless you wipe the first). Then you will pocket the other $200. Note that to work you will need a full version ,not an upgrade, and most likely not an OEM (Like HP ) version which will look for a blessing (entry in the bios or chipset on the motherboard to verify that it is made by the manufacturer who bought the OEM license). You either need a generic

That is the google toolbar http://castlecops.com/tk709-googletoolbar_...deleon_dll.html I think that this board chops long URLS castlecops.com/tk709-googletoolbar_dll_googletoolbar_dll_googlenav_dll_googletoolbar_en_big_dll_googl etoolbar_en_deleon_dll.html Copy and paste YOu need to add the Http:// but no www Uninstall it.
  14. In ME , user accounts are about as usefull as condoms on a eunuch. They are just for show and serve no real use. Just go to control panel / users and delete the other one. THen control panel/ network set to all users share access and then change your password to an empty one .
  15. I am wondering if you maybe have a virtual drive program which is mounting the CD as an image. The other likely explanation is that the CDROM IDE cable is going bad and when it has become hot due to a lot of data transfer, the crimped end starts to expand a bit and the teeth no longer bite cleanly into the outer two wires which carry the insert notification and drive query data.
  16. Yeah, that is very good connection speed. Not sure what NewZealand limits 56K connections to , but in the US the FCC arbitrarily limits it to 53Kbps allegedly to limit crosstalk between wired pairs and allow enough bandwidth for the call waiting and operator interrupt signals. http://www.monticello.net/html/56k.html has some good info on 56K modems. Offhand, I would say that possibly your telephone company is upgrading and replacing older lines, or your ISP has upgraded their software and equipment. Hopefully it will remain high.
  17. Do you have all your windows updates up to date? How about your antivirus? Did you save the attatchment and scan it with your antivirus prior to opening it? This sounds suspiciously like one of the jpg buffer overflow viruses .
  18. All good questions, Pete. My goal with this, is to create my own NAS, but not have any proprietary hardware that some NAS devices include. I will primarily be backing up two servers, one Windows 2000 and the other NetWare 6.0, but Windows XP workstations wouldn't be out the question. Total backup size should be in the 90GB range, currently uncompressed. This will be an automatic full backup nightly through BackupExec. Once or twice a week, I will also make a copy to DDS4 tape for off-site storage. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Ah, I understand now. I was wondering why you did not just buy off
  19. http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen....perfect.b.html Follow the manual removal instructions for this one carefully and then post your hijackthis log so we can make sure you do not have anything which is undetected.
  20. I agree, get rid of the red client apps. They have an unsavory relationship with claria, makers of gator and gain. I suspect your problem or "weirdness" is caused by having to many spyware apps running at once. Microsofts new antispyware is often not a team player. I would change all but one to not run at startup and just use them for manual scans. Use spybot with resident shield, or spywareguard to protect yourself .
  21. If you get specific, you are obsolete in your advice by the time it gets implemented. So instead, I prefer generic advice. Basic Desktop (budget: machine internet/ email checker some multimedia functionality lite office work/ homework machine) You can save money here with integrated components if you do not plan to upgrade. Onboard video, a relatively low cost motherboard, and low end processor (celeron, sempron, duron or even Via ) and only a minimal amount of RAM. An older and lower price processor is a definite option. Workstation (mid-level/ super spreadsheet machine/ compiling, data crun
  22. In combination with the 1.2GHz duron, I would say that the processor cannot keep up with the video card and when data is sent, there is nowhere to put it. Go to control panel / system/ hardware / device manager. What you want to do is check devices, click properties/ resources and see which one has a memory range which includes 0x6F20A59A or 0xC7406670 probably appearing as 0x6F000000 - 0x6FFFFFFF You should probably be able to use everest from lavalys to check what motherboard you have and check the manufacturers specs. You may find that you can install any Athlon with the same socket style
  23. What are you using to do these backups; and how much data (or ghost image file ) do you have? Since you are dealing with a Network, would a Network Attatched Storage (NAS) drive be an option? How many computers are you backing up? Do you do it automatically or manually?
  24. The big problem with a $200 price is that even an OEM copy of windows will cost about $100. Sure you could go with linux (Linspire for example) but is grandma ready for it? You could go with a used computer, do you have any recyclers or resellers in your area? http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_...duct_id=0184679 Is an example of a $249 system running linspire ( a linux flavor where you basically have to buy your software from them but it is "fairly" windows like) http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_...oduct_id=187849 is a machine running windows for $100more.
  25. You can also change the font size. Right click on desktop, choose properties/ appearance/ advanced I think it is menu and then choose font size. But if that is not it, experiment until you find it. Just remember the font size you had before and what you are changing each time.
