  1. I suspect that by not using the safely remove hardware option, it did not think the device was removed, but instead thinks it is connected and not functioning correctly. When you reconnected it, it thinks it is a second one of the same device (meaning it now thinks you have two installed or even more) connected, one working and one not. That is why it asks you to install the device. Then when it realizes it is the one it thinks was malfuntioning, it gets confused and does not finish. Unplug and disconnect the drive while the computer is off. Boot to windows and log in. Go to control panel/ s
  2. I generally prefer to try the device's manufacturer first. That way you are sure to get compatible and up to date drivers. Sure if you cannot find them there, you can try windows update and see if microsoft has any for you , search driversguide.com , or http://drivers.on-line.net.nz/cgi-bin/driver.pl?wizard The online driver wizard. http://www.driverzone.com/ http://www.driverguide.com/ http://www.drivershq.com/ http://www.windrivers.com/
  3. Is the chiming from the speakers, or internal? If it is internal, it is most likely a bios alert chime . Something to let you know that the processor is being clocked back to save power, or that things are overheating and thus are being clocked back to prevent heat buildup and damage. You may want to monitor your temperatures with everest or a similar program. You may also want to check the default alert levels set in the bios. Of course, it could just be the "You've got mail" chime. Control panel/ sounds check the sounds associated with events , click preview to hear them. Then change the one
  4. There are a few things to consider here. First let me say that with a removable drive, it is always best to use the safely remove hardware option in the system tray if it is present. It is there for a reason. If not, you should go to my computer and locate the drive and right click and see if it has either safely remove or eject as an option and choose that if there. The problem here is related to NTFS file system and how it handles small files by saving them in their master file table entry and also defrag and how it keeps track of recently used files . Although you may not have a problem,
  5. AMD64 FAQ "Q: What is AMD64? A: AMD64 is AMD’s 64-bit platform that extends the industry-standard x86 instruction set architecture and defines a new class of computing. The AMD64 platform is the first designed to deliver compatibility with existing x86 solutions and world-class 64-bit performance. The award-winning AMD Opteron™ processor for servers and workstations is the first milestone in establishing this new class of computing. The AMD Athlon 64 processor family will allow pervasive adoption of the AMD64 platform for desktop and notebook personal computers."
  6. The best advice I can give you is to get the correct powersupply for your motherboard. Although most of these are keyed so that you can put a 20 pin in only one way, I have heard of people doing this and the motherboard smoking and dieing and taking everything with it when they power up. http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec....Neo4-F&class=mb Normally , other than some Compaqs, this 24 pin is for PCI express boards. By not using the correct power supply , or at least an adapter designed to meet the requirements, you are going to over draw current on some of the 20 traces which are c
  7. Well, an automated time update will cover the symptoms but not fix the cause. The clock on your computer uses a crystal which oscillates at a known rate. When the motherboard was assembled, it was calibrated to use this oscillation to determine such things as bus speed and run the clock. Now , the crystal will continue oscillating (vibrating ) at the same frequency unless something changes it. So , it could be that a tiny chip has cracked off or that the crystal itself has a crack. As such, the oscillation speeds up, and so does your bus speed, processor speed, and clock. Thus in a case li
  8. Well, that could be one problem. The way these "fixit" utilities work is that they have a database of the registry entries and dll files etc which known applications and windows updates etc install and where. When they scan your registry for "invalid entries" they compare what they find there to what they expect to find. They fix things by deleting anything they do not recognize. I strongly advise against using any of these on a regular basis or automatically. You run them when you have a known problem and carefully choose what you want it to delete. "chkdsk doenst work because it says that t
  9. Gonna have to go buy a new bottle of Mcafee Benchmark so I can join you. The OL finished my bottle the other night and then downed the boxed wine too. Mcafee Benchmark
  10. http://www.nvidia.com/object/security.html I like hardware optimized solutions and I like stateful packet inspection. To me it looks pretty darn good . I would check regularly to see if they have any updates just in case a back door or flaw is discovered. But I bet it is less intrusive and demanding than a software option.
  11. Although there are some programs which are supposed to be able to find all the paths and dependencies and registry entries and correct things ; such as mcafee uninstaller; you cannot just copy and paste the programs program files folder since there are all these other components which expect it to be there. The simplest and cheapest solution is to uninstall the program , after you have backed up (copied) any data and settings . Choose to leave stuff when it asks if you want to remove additional components. Reboot and reinstall the program, but choose the custom install where you can specify a

  13. Do you have any of the XP disks? Or are you stuck with the recovery partition? Did you remove the hard drive you were trying to clone to? Did you try to ghost from within windows or from a boot to the ghosts CD? What do you see when you boot to the ghost cd? can it recognize what is on the drive?
  14. Press start button, momentary interrupt causes power supply to start to power up. lights flash , fans spin. Motherboard begins Power On Self Test, cannot find processor, no way to do test, tells powersupply to power down. This happens a lot when people move and their PC gets jostled a bit. The weight of the heatsink / fan has caused the processor to pull loose of one or more pinholes in the socket. The simple solution is to unplug the PC and open the case, release the heatsink (noting which side goes where) and raise the zero insertion force locking lever on the socket. Gently press the oute
  15. Usually this is a problem with one of your extensions no longer being supported. Go to tools/ options/ advanced/ software updates and uncheck the extensions option. Then do the check and see if it works. If so , manually go to the extensions (Tools/ extensions) and manually right click each one in turn and choose update until you find the one that jams.
  16. Yep, they did not even give me the courtesy of a chance to resign. I was planning on doing that anyhow since with no TechSupport board why should I hang around. If I bother going there, I bet Acri or Chicki will find a reason to ban me before long.
  17. I agree, I used to say a minimum of 10GB for the XP OS partition, but now say 15-20 is optimal. Gives you room for the things which need to be on the OS partition to install there and plenty of spare room for swap file etc. Then keep anything which can go outside the OS partition on other partitions so that they do not bog it down.
  18. Go to control panel/ security center / firewall Change the firewall . It still thinks you are using norton. IF you do not have one , you can enable the windows one to make windows happy. Or you can just change it so that it does not alert you any more. Over on the left, where it says change the way security center alerts me. You can check and uncheck what you want security center to alert you about.
  19. Well, I do not know how much of what they told me to believe. They said that Steve (The_D) had been moved elsewhere and there was a new boss to replace the VP of community services who had been our champion. But like others suggested, it could just be that they are bringing CFH back and Leo wanted me gone.
  20. I'll probably lurk and post all the things I have wanted to post but was to polite to over the last fifteen months. It really reeks that they would tell all the mods that they were closing and deleting the board, then demod me without letting me have a chance to resign and finally rename the board (they had said other boards would be renamed or combined but specifically said that TechSupport would be deleted). Will I go back? Doubtful to say the least. Just spent a few minutes redoing my homepage to get rid of all the links and buttons I do not need any more and put in some new ones I wil

    Tech Support Is Up

Possible, it would explain why they demodded me without letting me resign, since Leo does not like me. But I think they did that just to add insult to injury. When they said they were closing Tech Support, they did not say anything about renaming it to CFH, or about CFH returning. They said it was getting deleted. The renaming it CFH seems like an afterthought to me.
  22. Just wanted to say hi again and let you all know that they demodded me over there without even giving me a chance to resign. After all the time I stuck up for them and kept on for the good of the community they did not even give me the courtesy of resigning, they just demodded me while I was offline. What really gets me is they kill tech support but keep off topic.
  23. They made Miss Fae a senior, but not us. With Tech Support closed, neither of us has much of a reason to be there and they said they will "assign boards" to us "juniors" . So basically we would be told we have to take care of some gaming or anime board. No thanks. Dave said his goodbyes, and I have too. I would not be surprised if I get demodded or banned as a result of the shakeup.
  24. Hopefully , most of those who will miss the board will see it. I posted on the AOTS board since they may look there and it should remain there , although once I get demodded they will probably lock it. Others, well there is always email.
  25. They let me know this morning that it was scheduled to be closed today. May be lucky and have it open for one more day, but it is going. That was my big reason for sticking it out there, and I doubt I will be there much after that. Being a moderator was tough and I am almost glad to put that behind me.
