Hadn't thought of the Friday the 13th aspect; but then I am not a Triscadecaphobe. Got another front moving through tonight but they do not expect severe weather from this one; maybe the next due in on monday or tuesday.

If you do not know about readyboost then you did not enable it. Basically readyboost allows you to use a fast USB flash drive (thumb drive) to speed up your computer and enhance performance by keeping a copy of things that frequently get moved from the hard drive to RAM because USB flash drives can be read to ram faster than hard drives can be (They are making new laptops now with entirely solid state hard drives which boot up in under thirty seconds. Some day this will be standard probably, the main reason it is not common now is that flash memory is expensive and does not come in as big siz

Looking at your task manager screen shot 1. Bigfix ; while the original idea was great it never really took off; not enough software and hardware manufacturers were willing to pay them for fixlets so it pretty much only checks for windows updates. Windows update does that just fine. 2. Windows Defender; one of the least effective protections there is. 3. AVG ; the other I would uninstall these two and go with Avast free for home use. http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html 4. Desktop Window Manager is running; Have you optimized Vista by turning off the crap you do not need? ht

From the free arena I find that Avast is the best all around protection . Very thorough and effective. I do suggest spywareblaster or spywareguard for additional immunization and for those who are truely paranoid threatfire for protection against emerging threats.

Doesn't it just make you wish microsoft would do things like everyone else? Make it simple, put in an add/ remove programs entry where you have the option to repair the current installation like everyone else does; or allow you to uninstall the darn thing and do a clean install. But NNOOOOOOO they have to make it difficult and hide things so they can have one more question on the test.

Had a hard time finding this thread. I thought the title was "It's Storm Season again" Oh well, It is Storm Season again and early this year. We had some big storms move through Tuesday night. They had a tornado twenty miles northwest of here; just a little one (F1) . We just had straight line winds in advance of the storms; and a good deal of thunder , lightning , and rain. It knocked out the power even before the storm hit; and so many different places lost power that we had to wait two hours before they got the repair crew out to our area. Then it took them less than fifteen minutes to get

I abandoned using ad-aware a long time ago. Just not up to speed any more and not properly maintained in my opinion.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378 If you have Internet Explorer 7, you can repair damaged files or missing registration information in Internet Explorer 7. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Start Internet Explorer 7. 2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options. 3. On the Advanced tab, click Reset. 4. In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset to confirm. I would also suggest running system file checker (go to start / run and type sfc /scannow hit enter (note the space after sfc and before /scannow) Let it check the integrity of your protected system f

Probably something you did tripped one of those automated money makers to send her an email "someone is trying to find you ; if you want more info send us $29" and she went for it and found out you had been snooping around trying to get her info. So she decided to call and see why; but got your answering machine and hence did not know what to say. I had a similar occurrence; an old girlfriend from way past sent an email to one of my oldest addresses (my very first hotmail account) which I check occasionally ; inviting me to join an adult dating service. My bet is she just got out of jail a

The truth? I only recently noticed that it exists. I kept seeing posts from others listed as the most recent in open chat and they just were not here. So one day I clicked the link and found it. I prefer to stay out of the political fray. Like assholes, everyone has opinions on politics and religion and everyone seems to think that theirs is beautiful and does not smell; while most others think that it stinks and don't want to have to look at it.

For streaming from your computer to tv there are now several options. I am familiar with the sling catcher; probably the most expensive but also most versatile http://www.slingmedia.com/go/slingcatcher http://shop3.frys.com/product/5383748?site...CH:MAIN_RSLT_PG Pretty sure Sony (Bravia?) offers a similar device. I also recall seeing something similar which does not do internet streaming for about $99 Looks like an Xbox can be used to do it too http://computershopper.com/networking/howt...-pc-to-your-tv2 This offers some optons too http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2255155,00.asp If all yo

Java Doesn't Work After System Restore
Pete_C replied to paulandtra's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
Well, if you can boot to both os, and you know which one is the old version you boot to it. You then locate the folder the new one installed to (IE if old is C:\Windows, new is probably C:\Winnt) delete that folder (it won't allow you to delete the folder for the version you are booted to ) and then go to start / run and type msconfig on the boot.ini tab click check all boot paths and it will discover the new version is gone and remove the boot option. Did you try uninstall all java and then download the latest version? http://www.java.com/getjava/ The links not working is generally caused by -
http://www.aumha.org/a/stop.php 0x00000024: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a physical problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may be corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard drive fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest running ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file system filters such as virus scanners, firewall software, or backup utilities. Che

The biggest problems with using an old os are that first microsoft no longer creates new patches for it . When a new exploit is discovered in windows XP or IE7, chances are that the same hole exists in older versions; but microsoft only produces patches for the current products. The malware authors, as soon as a patch is released reverse engineer it to find out what it fixed and then create something to take advantage of that hole. Secondly with many software applications , the latest version just plain will not run on the older platform so you wind up running an older outdated version which

I thought you were going to post a screenshot from yesterday when google labled all microsoft sites as dangerous to your computer. In fact, I think they labled all sites dangerous and blocked you from going to any of them.
-
Well google makes it look like your person is legit http://bulletin.aarp.org/yourmoney/persona...g_away_for.html I have about a cubic foot worth of those sunday inserts; I keep meaning to go through them and check for something I might buy; but generally they expire so fast it is not worth it. Probably gonna just go through and throw all the expired ones in the recycle bin. Any how , my newspaper subscription ends next week and I have no intention of renewing. I'll call and cancel (so they do not pull that "you never canceled so here is a bill" routine in a couple of months and charge me t

Well, hijackthis has a delete on reboot feature where you type in the path and name Then there is killbox / pocket killbox and move on boot and several other forceware deleters. If avast finds them, try running it in safe mode and see if it can delete them there. Do you have view hidden and system files checked in folder options? And "hide protected files" and "hide known file extensions" unchecked? If not do so.

If it is too big for a floppy try a USB flash drive or burn it to a CD.

Net Framework 3.5 Do I Need This Update?
Pete_C replied to zonker's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
You probably should just in case the update is to patch a security hole or exploit. Failing to keep software and components up to date is just asking for some malware to install silently and without even your antivirus noticing via a zero day exploit. When they say it is a high priority , then there is good reason to believe they have discovered such a flaw in the older version ; just that there have not been enough observed actual exploitations of the hole to qualify it as a critical security update yet. But when they release such a high priority update; you can rest assured that the bad guy -
I find most coupons to be worthless. There once was a time when you could actually save money using them; but manufacturers and retailers have gotten wise. They maintain databases of when coupons expire and keep the price up and do not place the item on sale until the coupon expires. Then when there are no coupons often the place the item on sale for less than it would have cost even with the coupon being doubled. On top of that, they have taken advantage of people not paying attention to detail (or having failing eyesight, not sure which they find to have a greater impact) and have signific

Delldimension E510 Wont Start Up. Blinking Orange Led
Pete_C replied to d14blo's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
Basically means one of your USB devices needs more power than the USB traces on your motherboard can supply. You either need to add a powered hub with external transformer or get a USB PCI expansion card to add more ports and get the type with a power adapter (usually like the floppy drive power connector but could be a hard drive molex connector) -
Yeah, only fonts belong in the font folder. Anything else does not belong there and you can safely delete Should just have files with extension ttf, fon, pfm, (well the fonts for dos, system set etc have no extension but are recognizably fonts and will have filename starting with USE

Well they had a good ice storm last night. It really did not start till after 6PM and was essentially over by 2AM; but it got cold enough (around 20) that everything did freeze and it was very icy this morning. To many fools who do not understand what "Stay off the roads if you do not have to go out, and if you do leave extra distance and travel slower than normal" means. While they sanded most of the big overpasses, and ramps ; side streets and the area under overpasses had ice and a lot of overpasses where the sun shone on one area and then the runoff ran into shade and refroze became slic

Memory Upgrade Compatability?
Pete_C replied to PapaLex606's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR_SDRAM >In the context of the 1 GB non-ECC PC3200 SDRAM module there is very little visually to differentiate Low Density from High Density RAM. High Density DDR RAM modules will, like their Low Density counterparts, usually be double sided with eight 512 Mb chips per side. The difference is that each chip, instead of being organized in a 64M x 8 configuration is organized with 128M bits and a data width of 4 bits, or 128M x 4. To further confuse the issue, some RAM is labeled as 128M x 8, and is also called high density. I think one of those must be a typo. -
Ah,, that sounds like a virus. I think I remember there being one which attempts to change the boot sector / partition table and can trip the bios to give that warning if either DEP or BIOS virus warning is enabled.
