  1. If you happen to have a linux box around, gftp is great. It seems to have all of the normal features, and is easy to use. Not as easy to use, but ftp from the windows command line does work. I have used it to move a few files around, but to manage a website with it would suck.
  2. Seems reasonable. that should be plenty of speed for what you need to do. I ran with a barton 2600 for a long time, and it was fast.
  3. I know peyote also contains mescaline, is this the same cactus you grew? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peyote
  4. I sometimes hold it just so I can do it in the shower.

    24 Tonight

I just finished season 1 in three days. I did not expect that person to die in the end. I told myself I would not start season 2, if I did I may have a hard time stopping after just one episode. The itch is growing, I really want to watch the start of season 2.
  6. To back up what lefty1953 said, goto the "device manager" and uninstall all of the devices listed under "univesal serial bus controllers". After a reboot the devices should get reinstalled. That may fix your problem. If that does not work, I would be curious to see if uninstalling service pack 2 fixes the issue. You can get to the device manager by entering devmgmt.msc into the run box It may be a good idea to set a restore point before trying the above suggestion, just incase something does not go as expected how to set a restore point edit added later// I just realized lefty1953 said to re
  7. Those must be your burst speeds, I think the more important one is average read speed. my seagate 320gb 7200.10 SATA drive: Burst speed: 226mb/s average read: 65.7mb/s random access: 13.5 (I think lower is better) My 40gb 7200rpm hitachi ide drive: Burst speed: 73mb/s average read: 48mb/s random access: 12.6 Your 5400 rpm drive is getting better numbers then my hitachi 7200rpm drive

    24 Tonight

I have had a busy week, which is good, but I needed a day off. I had no appointments or nothing that needed to be done today, so I decided to see what 24 was like(my friend gave me the first 4 or 5 seasons). I just finished up nine episodes in row. The story was a little far fetched but I was very entertained. I definitely like the show.
  9. I always warn clients to be very careful about installing free stuff they find on the web, even if it seems benign. I think that is the biggest risk you can do. It is analogous to having unprotected sex with strangers.
  10. blubber (didn't they used to make perfume from whale fat?)
  11. I don't have any hard science or benchmarks to back up my statement, I figured a hardrive that spun 30% faster could load and find info 30% faster. That seems significant. I may just be talking from my back side :-) HDtach is a good program to measure and compare numbers of your different hardrives, but as sethook pointed out, do these gains translate to noticeable differences, i'm not really sure. I upgraded from an athon xp 2600 to a dual core athlon x2 4200 and did not notice a huge difference in day to day stuff. It did shine in cpu intensive tasks like encoding, but I don't do that everyd
  12. You would get a substantial speed difference putting xp on the faster drive. I think the hardrive is the weak link in many systems. People tend to overlook that part when trying to increase performance.
  13. breasts (this was in response to mardi-gras, I must have forgotten to refresh the page)
  14. it has been listed under optional updates for a few days now. I am pretty sure it was not listed under optional or critical for about 2 days. I wonder if they will switch it back to critical after working out more bugs.
  15. I am pretty sure that was just a joke. For what its worth, I thought(for a bit) it was real.
  16. I think it is just basic supply and demand. The proc you need is th fastest that is available for your board, so that makes them is high demand. The 2.6 hyperthreaded fsb 800 model is one of the slowest in its class, so people are selling them and trading up.
  17. Spinrite works great to recover bad sectors. On a very low level it uses an algorithm to piece together the data. I have had windows drives that were so corrupted they would not boot, after running spinrite they booted right up.
  18. This free program is great for benchmarking any type of drive, including usb. I think the sequential read is the most significant one.
  19. You are going to have a tough time finding that proc. I bet lots of people have the same idea as you. I did a quick scan of ebay with the only two available going for more then $100. I think this is what you need Pentium 4 2.6 northwood core(not hyper-threaded) FSB 400mhz model: RK80532PC064512 . You may want to look into upgrading your board and proc together. You can get a nice board and proc brand new for under $100 at newegg.
  20. Your BIOs is probably set to run the SATA drive in IDE mode. I thought this is slightly less efficient then SATA mode, I am not certain though. You should see if their is an option in the bios to set it to SATA mode.
  21. I would think it just copies zeros and ones from disc to disc. So long as no converting is involved, it should be a perfect copy. I could not find anything with google to back that up.
