Besttechie.net Will Be Moving To A Dedicated Server
shanenin replied to Besttechie's topic in BestTechie News
what os are you running on your server? -
I am kind of worried vista security might really be good. This could really hurt the pc repair business. A good 60% of my income(maybe more) is related to malware. I just had a thought, people will still keep installing free stuff they find on the web. Vista security will not stop users from making bad decisions. I'll be fine :-) edit added later// My wife just pointed out this to me. since most users are setup as non admins, kids will have a harder time installing stuff without having the administrator password.

by the way I just asked my friend what he has for drives in his server(almost all tv shows) I know he just bought a 750gb ide drive, I not sure where he will be using that.

I just asked my friend who is obsessed with raid arrays. He currently has about 9 320gb drives in his array. Anyways, he said it is not supported in XP pro. You may want to look into doing it with hardware. Does your motherboard have a raid controller, do you have sata drives?

I would do a search on newegg. Their are a couple of rosewill cards that got a "5 star" customer rating http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList....=firewire+cards As to dell compatible, I don't think that factors in much. I like this rosewill, it has a via chipset http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16815265002

are you trying to mount your linux drive from windows, or your windows drive from linux? edit added later// If you want to mount your windows share. You need to make a directory to mount(attach) it to. Then you need to mount it. This will keep it mounted until you reboot this first command will make a directory called "win" in your home directory mkdir ~/win this command should mount it to that newly made directory. mount -t smbfs -o username=shane, password="" //marsala/backup /home/shane/win "username" is referring to my windows login name "password" is referring to my windows password. I think XP pro and software raid will allow you to use IDE drives. If you use a hardware controller you will need sata drives.

If you don't mind spending a few dollars, this software is great http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList....onis+true+image Their are some free programs out thier also. I do not have experience with them.

I had some code, but after looking at it it does not work. I may give it a another shot. I did notice something. You only need to use the DIM statement with variables these two lines, I don't think are needed DIM higer AS STRING DIM lower AS STRING

firefox saves your bookmarks as an html file. In windows XP this is located at C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\random.default\bookmarks.html in linux it is usually stored at /home/username/.mozilla/firefox/random.default/bookmarks.html note: any file or directory that starts with a "." is hidden. That means the ".mozilla" directory is hidden. You will just need to copy the file called "bookmarks.html" from you XP install to replace the "bookmarks.htm"l file on your linux install.

edit>>>preferences I am not sure why the linux version is in a different spot. I have always wondered why.

You could probably do it either way, but XP will not want to boot properly if it is set to slave. You should have XP set to master. Ubuntu is happy to install itself to the slave drive.

I would think that synaptic would have installed all of the needed packages, but not certain. What was the error message?

It does, If you want it to set up the dual boot automatically.

I wonder if Microsoft will make changes to fix that. -
Mount Network Samba Drives With Vista
shanenin replied to iccaros's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
Same here with XP. CMD tells me "The network path was not found" until I browse the shares with Explorer. (Then it gives me "Access denied" when it really means "CMD does not support UNC paths as current directories", but that's just because CMD sucks.) is that with vista or xp? -
i should have at least cleaned the joints with alcohol.

Mount Network Samba Drives With Vista

Even if I first browse the shares with explorer, I still get network path not found when using CMD. -

If I type the path into the command shell it does not work for me either. I get the same error as you. You have to type it into network place, or the "RUN" box, which is hidden on vista, you need to use a key combo to get it. -
I understand the importance of flux, I started soldering copper pipes. Without a clean joint and flux, it would not work. I thought that I read flux is bad for circuit boards, the acid would wreck them. Is flux(not pluming flux) ok to use on all circuit boards?

Thanks :-) I needed the confidence boost. I always got scared when I would get a call about a broken laptop. Now I will not feel so inexperienced. It was not to bad. I think as far as laptops go, this one was pretty easy. Their were not all that many parts.
