So long as the location generates $300/week in extra business, I will be breaking even on the added expense. I am already spending $1000/month on yellow page ads. They currently do not have an address listed because it is my home. I think having the address on the ads will make them more efficient. I also think I will be able to sell some computers. I can keep a nice new custom build on display, plus have my older used computers on display also. Of course I will be getting extra drive by advertising. I know i have lost business because I am working from home. People associate that with inexper

I just signed a $10,800 one year lease for my computer repair shop. Even if the added expense of the location does not create enough business to make my monthly lease payment and utilitys I will be ok. We have some equity in our house if need be to pay the bills. I am really excited. Now i need to by some new equipment, Maybe I will build my first Raid 5 array :-) One other big expense will be for a new sign. Supposedly the road I am on has 18,000 cars drive down it per day. I personally think is false, it is just single lane, but it is a busy street.

Glad you got it fixed, I had no idea what might be wrong.

Did you try installing Compiz, at which time your package manager was broken? Did Compiz install without errors? Did you have to edit your sources.lst file manually before installing Compiz? You can check the permissions of the file using this command ls -l /etc/apt/sources.lst

I agree. I think it would be wise to save some money on a less expensive dual core proc, and spend the money on 2gbs of ram.

Thanks for the youtube link. That was a great remake. Their is something about the blues that just makes me feel good. As a young kid(stoner), I was slowly growing to love the blues by listening to bands like Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones. It was not until I was older I appreciated the blues influence those bands absorbed.

I see those all the time, a clean install will usually always fix it. You may want to try and test the memory and also run a harddrive diagnostic. I got one of those computers in front of me right now. The funny thing is it reloaded fine, but after updating it, I could only boot into a black screen. I am on my second reload, hopefully the first time was a fluke. I have a hunch, this computer will keep giving me problems. edit added// second reload seems to be working **crosses fingers**

Cookie Associated With My Yahoo
shanenin replied to wonderent's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
open up IE, then choose "tools">>"internet options", on the general tab choose "delete cookies". Now as Mike said goto the webpage that you need to find the cookie for, it should be the only one there. -
Their are both 2.0 williamette and northwood Pentium 4s. One way to make certain you are correct is to look at the processor. It will have a part number on it. Then compare the part number to the ones on This list of Pentium 4s When I goto the HP site. They list the proc as "P4N 2.0 GHz/400". I would bet the "N" refers to Northwood.

As marty pointed out, make sure you check those other items. I have probably replaced a motherboard in that past that did not need it. I think most techs have made that mistake before.
-
good luck. You may run into a few hiccups installing it, but it is to be expected. It is worth the effort. After you have finished you will feel good about what you accomplished. You may want to get a second opinion on the board I recommended. I am pretty certain that is what you need, but I may have made a mistake.
-
The board is pretty much plug and play. It will probably default to the lowest FSB, which in your case is what you want. Linux would run great on that system :-)
-
I think that uses a pentium 4 northwood core proc 400mhz. I think this board is what you need. As of today it is out of stock. Your recovery cds will not work with this board. If you installed this board, you would need to get your hands on a generic XP Home OEM cd, then use that along with the key on the side you your computer to reinstall. If by some chance that board uses a pentium 4 willilamette core, it will not work with that board.

is it a HP Pavilion 742c?

is their a more exact model number? edit added later I see you updated the exact model

Bulged capacitors are just one thing I like to look for, but in themselves not conclusive. I have a machine that is running windows ME perfectly, yet it has many caps that are bulged and have leaked, dried electrolyte fluid on top. Since you have ruled out the power supply, I can say with about 90% certainty the motherboard is bad. What is the model of your computer?
-
I tend to "jump the gun" and blame the motherboard, but that seems to be most likely. Did you notice and bulged capacitors?
-
if it is the motherboard, you would need to replace it(not fixable). You can get one, depending on what you cpu is, for about $50 new. If you use a motherboard other then a near exact match of the one you are using now, you will also need to reload windows.
-
As to the memory, with computers ANYTHING is possible. I don't think I have seem memory cause a computer to just shutdown in the way you described. It would be a good idea to rule it out. I would take a known good stick out of your other computer and try it in each slot. If you are still having problems you can rule the memory out.
-
The two most probable things would be the power supply or the motherboard. If you can, I would try swapping the supply(even though it is fairly new) out. Take a look at the motherboard, in particular, the capacitors around the cpu. It would not surprise me if they are bulged and leaking. It does not sound like a heat issue, but make sure the dust in blown out and your cpu fan is turning.

I think I missed spyware guard. It does also provide real time protection, As sethook pointed out, teach good habits. No spyware program can stop you from installing crap. On my home computer we are running with only avg anti-virus(we don't need it). I also have three kids running the computer, but they all have limited accounts. As far as i know, we have never had a spyware or virus problem. This is because we don't install anything we are not completely sure we trust. I tell all my clients: "only install programs from reputable companies, any thing else can cause problems" "nothing is free"

it still appears to be beta. http://www.apple.com/safari/

An anti spyware program that has real time protection would be a good thing to add. I like "spy sweeper".

I bet the installer will let you install with only 128mbs of ram. Give it a try.
