I got to experience it first hand. I got lucky, I was able to still boot in safe mode to correct the problem. If I get anymore hp/amd machines, I think I will do a preemptive fix and remove the registry entry that loads the intel driver before installing sp3.

It may be worth trying a different adapter. That one might just not work well.

Computer Reboots Instead Of Shutdown
shanenin replied to Matt's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
You could try booting it with a live linux cd, then shut it down from linux. This would tell you if Windows or hardware(bios) is the problem. -
Can I buy a boatload of XP oem disks and sell and activate new XP computers long after the June 30 cutoff of XP sales Microsoft is doing?

Finally Building A New Computer...
shanenin replied to Surfer_Gurl's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
You definitely want to go with XP 32 bit. This is as fast as the 64 bit version, but much more compatible. Their are a few specific reasons you may want to run 64 bit. If you needed it you would know. The difference between OEM and retail is mainly the license. The retail version can be switched from computer to different computer. The OEM version is tied to only one computer. Microsoft does not want you to switch it to another computer. -
You may be thinking about the licence that comes with some versions of MS Office. That license will allow you to both install on one desktop and one laptop.

They were simpler times. I just started using the computer(prior usage was my commodore 64 as a kid), we bought our first one for the family. It was a 2.0 ghz celeron system. I started watching "screens savers" and "call for help". With in a few months I installed Redhat 9 along with XP as a Dual boot. That was the same time I started posting in the techtv forums. Back then using computers was just a fun hobby, now today computers are my job so their not as fun as they used to be.

Three steady beeps(assuming it is not coming from the harddrive) may indicate a bad video card. Depending on the bios of your computer, the beeps could indicate different things. You may want to take a look at the capacitors of both the motherboard and video card. If they are bulged or leaking, it may show you the problem.

Spinrite I agree, that program is great. It has helped me recover data from many corrupted drives.

Wouldn't lshw be more detailed? Nice tool tman70. Cool, I will have to give that a try.

My favorite way to determine which hardware a machine uses is to use a live linux cd and the command lspci. Do the above tools need the drivers installed to determine which hardware is installed?

It is the fastest current processor used in laptops. You may want to max the ram out. -
Need Recomendations On Buying A Laptop

You probably would want to find a laptop with a core2duo proc with at least 2gbs of ram -
That was my first thought, but I did not have the heart to tell the gentlemen(he was proud, his mom made it for him).

I was not able to find anything that would solve the problem, so I reloaded.

I installed Vista sp1 on a Dell XPS 420. Ever since then I am getting a blue screen with stop code 0x0000c1f5. I even get this same stop code if I try and boot from my Vista DVD. I found this information. The only solution MS offers is a complete format. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946084 I found this article, with a work around, but I don't have this directory, c:\$Extend or the log file, $TxfLog. I am not sure what else to do. http://www.delmartian.com/TheGalacticToile...YSKB946084.aspx Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Its biggest strength is its ability to remove tough stuff most large commercial anti-spyware programs can't remove.

Thanks, I might take you up on that offer.

The free version of Malware Byte's Anti-Malware is my favorite anti-malware tool. What do you guys think about using the paid version of that of that program as a persons sole anti-spyware program? I always get asked for recommendations of anti-malware programs. I am never sure what to tell them, they all seem to suck, but Malware Byte's Anti-Malware seems to like it might be a good choice.

Strange Charter Network Issue
shanenin replied to shanenin's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
the problem is already fixed. I was just curious to the fact Vista computers were not affected. -
In Rochester MN people who used Charter Communications for their internet were experiencing problems for about 2 days. I got many calls from clients describing the same symptoms: they could only go to some pages on web sites, but many just did not work. I noticed myself I was having a problem with logging into ebay, and clients also mentioned not being able to log into hotmail or aol mail. So I think the problem may have been with with ssl pages. MY kids could not get into myspace.com(I am not sure if that uses ssl). Here is the strange thing. People who were using Vista seemed unaffected by t
