  1. Have you tried different usb device one at a time? Do all usb devices give this popup or just some? Do you see any type of pattern to it?
  2. I would try pulling the power cord, then pressing the power button(this will drain all the power from the board). Then pull the cmos battery for about 30 seconds. Place the battery back in. Then replug it and start the computer. The computer will do a scan for ide drives. That may help.
  3. I would rule out the monitor as being the problem, if possible try a different one to see if that solves the problem.
  4. What does it do? When your put in a cd does it start to spin and try and read it? With the highest probability, you probably have a bad optical drive. It is a pretty easy job to replace. You can get a DVD burner for $25
  5. A virus can't be transmitted along with an empty floppy drive. To carry an infection, you would need to have an infected floppy in it.
  6. What did you do(if anything) just before the "blue screening" started happening.
  7. Your correct. I switched to the old skin and the quote button is called "Reply". For what its worth, I think "Reply" is much more intuitive then "Quote"
  8. Thanks, I knew I had to be missing something obvious. Has it always been that way, I remember their being a "reply" button in the past? With that said, I tend to remember stuff how I want to(not always accurate). The human memory is a strange thing.
  9. When I go to reply to a message given to me via PM, I am unable. I do not have a "Reply" button, only "quote" and "delete".
  10. Of course, this is an open forum for anyone to read and comment. By the way, who are "they". Do you mean Combofix developers or Admins at this forum?
  11. Thanks for the help. I was really getting agitated that many people on this board knew the answer but for some reason were not sharing it. I thought the internet was to share information, not keep certain info from certain people. The funny thing is any one can download and run combofix, but only special people are able to know how to repair it. Thanks again Chuck, YOUR help was appreciated :-)
  12. Even if you press the "reprogrammed" button, if the machine is fully updated, do you think the "Windows XP" OS will pop up with a prompt asking your permission to let it install?
  13. For the most part, would it be safe to say a fully patched(mainly IE) system can not get infected that way.
  14. I have a hunch this info is documented on one of the restricted areas(for staff and students) of some of the main malware removal web sites. I don't know why this info is not easy to find. It must be used on a regular basis.
  15. Isn't the default setting for XP to ask permission before installing ActiveX controls? If all is working correctly, I thought that no programs can be installed with out the user giving the go ahead.
  16. I have people telling me they have been getting malware infections by doing nothing more then clicking on a link. Doesn't Windows XP request your permission before letting an install happen? I have been telling my clients they are pretty safe as long as they do not agree to install something. I think I have been giving false information. What is your guys opinion on the likely hood of a drive by infection? Is this likely to happen on a fully updated OS, or do most of these drive by infections typically only affect unpatched machines?
  17. Have you had any luck getting your data off using the Linux CD?
  18. I recently bricked a machine with combofix. I ended up reinstalling the OS, at the time it was the most efficient way to solve the problem. If this happens again in the future I would like to be prepared. I noticed combofix creates a full registry backup. I am assuming that with the recovery console, you can use this backup to repair your system. Is their any documentation on how to do this?
  19. A little more information would be helpful. What operating system are you using. Is this the same computer as you posted here?
  20. Cool. I just mounted it manually. I wanted to try the command line program mplayer to play some avi files on a Windows share.
  21. Are you sure you need the chipset drivers for Vista? My guess is Vista already contains those necessary drivers. As to the raid drivers, those might be the ones labeled Serial ATA, Vista X86.
  22. I am running Ubuntu 8.04. I can browse my Windows shares by going to "Places", then "Network". I am assuming these network drives are mounted somewhere. I can't seem to figure out where. I am not even sure what mechanism(maybe SAMBA) is being used to view and/or mount these shares.
  23. The order probably does not matter much. As far as I can tell their is not a Vista chipset driver.
