Hello, there are many websites that offer free software. Download.com Snapfiles are just two of many many software protals all over the net. These sites also offer software that is free trial or demo (and then you buy). Is there a specific type of software you are looking for? Matt

I agree with the gmail nominations. About thunderbird, it depends on what your service provider does. I am not familiar with how COX does it, but I know in gmail, you can set it to keep the messages on the server even after download to the email client. My guess is, however, that no, it won't remain on the server. Matt

Online scanners are a great idea. Yes, formatting will delete everything, so there is no worry of it not removing a virus. Although, I think formatting should only be done after other steps are taken. Try some of those online scans, and if possible, have your friend follow the directions here: http://www.besttechie.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=1455 Good luck, Matt

Windows Security Center Is Incorrect
Matt replied to daygo140's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
In the security center, where it says your AV is off, is there something called 'recommended solutions'? If so, click that, and click that you already have Norton and will turn it on manually always. This will stop the warning on boot up, and Norton will still come on when you boot up like it did before the problem. This may also be considered a 'bandaid' fix, as you put it, but give that a shot, reboot and see if Norton still starts and you get now error. EDIT: Then, try disabling Norton, and see if the alert comes up. If it does, then it means that is still watching Norton's status, whi -
Windows Security Center Is Incorrect
Matt replied to daygo140's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
Hi daygo140, One thing you could try, is to turn off that warning. In the security center, on the left click 'Change the way Security Center alerts me'. From there you can turn off your virus protection alert. While I would not reccomend this, as it is useful for alerting you when there actually is a problem, it is still an option if you are sure your AV is working. Matt -

I like to use AdBlock <-- a must, blocks popups and banner ads https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/morei...ication=firefox IEView <-- allows you to view pages and open links in IE with just a click of the mouse https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/morei...ication=firefox BugmeNot <-- finds login names from the bugmenot index (for sites that make you register to read articles, etc.) http://roachfiend.com/archives/2005/02/07/bugmenot/ Matt

Most of the people you saw are part of the HJT team. These people may not be very active, but are kept there so that, in the event they do pop in every once in a while, they have permission to help with logs. Many of these people are probably from one or more of the forums listed here: http://www.besttechie.net/index.php?option...id=26&Itemid=52 Matt

I'm going to move this to the HJT section.

A thought I had about this. One thing that could help, if the coloring isnt possible, is an image system, like the one at geekstogo. For example, your profile there Jeff: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?showuser=13268 has that image under your avatar, rather than just text. I think the image is replacing the blue blocks.. Just a thought. Matt
