  1. When I am trying to track down drivers for an unknown motherboard, I will usually boot a linux cd, then run a command called "lspci". It will tell me what most of the chipsets in the motherboard are. I then use this info to find Windows drivers. Is their a windows program that will do the same? What do you guys use? Maybe i will give "everest" a try.
  2. Thats great. I was reading somewhere that Michael Dell uses Ubuntu as his main OS on his laptop. edit added// I see that link about Michael using Ubuntu is in the article
  3. I have had many computers that will detect my hardrives after switching them around, resetting the cmos can do wonders. You may be able to reset it just by pulling the bios battery. Their may also be a jumper by the battery that needs to be moved to clear the cmos. Since the windows 98 drive seems to work, it does not really seem like a bios problem. If you are able to get your XP disc to boot, try running fixmbr from the recovery console.
  4. I know this is a dumb question, but did you double-click?
  5. Sleeping during the rain, it does not get much better.
  6. Gnome uses "evince" to open pdfs. It is under graphics>>document viewer If you just click on the pdf file it should open evince automatically
  7. We got to 88 degrees in Rochester, Mn. This was one degree short of the record temp of 89 degrees. It did not seem that warm, I guess it wasn't to humid.
  8. About 10 days out of every year I get hit hard with a spring allergy(it has hit me about 6 years now). Today I just started to sneeze and my eyes are getting itchy. In a couple of days it will be really bad, but before I know it, it will pass. I am lucky just to have allergies for such a short period.
  9. My dream is now a reality. I got my hosta moved and some grass seed planted. One less thing to weigh on my conscience. Now I need to get the vegetable garden planted.
  10. here in our town of Rochester Mn Qwest dsl has huge upload speeds, I think 1.5MB/s up. You may find better upload speeds with the dsl provider in that area.
  11. Do you mean you want to have the text editor icon on you bottom toolbar(like the task bar), for that you would r-click on the task bar, then choose "add to panel".
  12. those hosta are about impossible to kill.
  13. r-click on the bottom bar, then choose "add to panel"
  14. Thanks. I spend some time yesterday looking for that option without luck.
  15. I recently upgraded my computer with some extra hard drives. My main reason was for the upgrade was to separate my OS drive from my data drives. When I work on a client computer, I will often back up a full image of their hardrive to my computer. Then Acronis will allow me to mount that image if I need to retrieve files. While doing a backup or a large copy to my drive, this would slow my OS down significantly. I now have three separate 320gb SATA drives. One of these drives is dedicated to holding my OS and some home files. The other two 320gbs drives are for holding client data and a backu
  16. I had a dream last evening about splitting some "hosta" plants. This is based on reality. I need to thin some of the bushy plants and plant a new row behind the garage. It must be weighing on me subconsciously.
  17. April is also one of the slowest months for the computer repair business.
  18. uninstalling and reinstalling firefox will not remove your profile. The profile is where the problem may lie. In my case, while firefox is closed, I would delete this directory, yours will be some other random directory name. C:\Documents and Settings\shane\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\c92krqa9.default
  19. The board has been pretty quiet that past few days. Maybe the upgraded capacity of the new server will draw in posts like a magnet.
  20. If you get desperate, you could delete your whole profile folder. Before doing so, make sure you save a copy of your file called "bookmarks.html" . For example my firefox profile is located here: C:\Documents and Settings\shane\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\c92krqa9.default After doing so, you will probable have to reinstall flash and other addons. All of byour saved passwords will also be gone.
  21. not really a "Duh" . If you are used to single clicking always, why would you think to double click. Until today, i never registered the difference between using firefox on linux or windows. I would always double click on windows, but it never seemed to work correctly.
  22. Cool. For a server debian is a solid choice. Do you have your providers install debian for you, then you do all the configuring using ssh? If you wanted to run a Windows OS, I suppose it would add quite a bit to your price. I would assume you would need a full windows server license.
  23. A double click should do it.
