  1. You are welcome folks. I am still curious as to what and where this thing really came from. I haven't been over to G4 to check on cabdad's thread yet. I sure hope we can get some more information about it. So is anyone seeing anything about this on the various security boards? If this is a new type phishing scam, then it is really going to be hard to tell what is real and what isn't on any update or scan and fix. Sounds like things have been pushed to a new level of scary stuff to figure out how to protect our computers from. I thought I was already as paranoid as I could get, and that was se
  2. Thanks for the information Liz. Sounds like a good product. But my cat would be quite upset with me if I moved her water dishes. She uses them day and night. As for mice coming upstairs, yikeeeeees!!!!! I can barely handle them in the basement. Hubby has gotten four of them in the traps since I wrote my post. I asked him if I could wake him during the night to go down and remove dead ones, and reset traps. Oh the look husbands can give sometimes. But it sounded like a good idea to me. No plums left... Ha! So traps are baited with cheese. When that stops working, we'll use peanut butter. Yes
  3. I found this by cabdad over at G4, I think it is important to warn everyone of it. cabdad's warning on G4 Here is a quote of part of his long detailed article about this thing. Quote: " Only my Xoft Spyware/Adware scanner came up with..........Microsoft Office.hta........and listed it as a trojan/spware. None of my other programs, Spybot, Spyware Blaster, Ad-Aware, Spyware Guard Sygate or Avast as well as a few other offline scanners even hinted at a problem from this nor catch it. This file is not a task manager process, it is a startup program that has permission rights from Microsoft by th
  4. I think my collie/sheltie herding instincts aren't going to work very well right now with mice. Have a major mouse problem, so maybe need to rethink the terriers that the site came up with for me. My Siamese cat has been telling me something was going on in the basement lately. But I just blamed it on macmarauder and his nuclear reactor lab. Ha! Seriously, Siamese cats, at least the ones I've had, are good at telling you there is a mouse (or bugs too) problem but they expect us to fix it not them! So we set some traps, but no takers. Didn't see or hear any activity for awhile, but yesterday

    Spring?

Watch out folks!!! Liz has now learned the secret handshake, oooops I mean how to do links. That's great Liz!!! I am proud of you for how fast you are learning, not only the board ropes, but all sorts of computer stuff. Good Job!!! Now I want to seriously thank you for that great link to your lighthouse, and especially because down at the bottom was a link to lighthouse maps etc, I clicked on that, then on Oregon. Then checked out a few of the lighthouses I knew we had seen one time or another to the coast. But the one neither my hubby or I remember is Tillamook Rock. And that one sure is
  6. besides i kinda prefer the laid back and respectful nature of these boards. Well, you are right macmaurader....At G4's boards, i had to look around to find a good post to reply to. Here, i know every post is tech related, and a very good question... Ooops! I am supposed to answer tech questions????? If so I am in the wrong place. Still it feels like the right place. I can always ask questions right? Or sidetrack a thread, or confuse an issue? Or tease, or just gab and have fun!!! Yes I think I have found the right place, because we are allowed to be ourselves here, talking tech or other stu
  7. Yes it is a scary world out there. It is getting harder to tell what's real and what's not nowadays. Thanks for the information. God bless everyone.
  8. Thanks for the information. God bless everyone.
  9. Gee I didn't know that about the marking pens. Mine was a Sharpie, originally bought for use as a laundry marker. Thanks for the warning to get the right kind.On my list for the next trip to the office supply store or computer store. I have never had any problems yet, but don't want to push my luck for the time I really need those backups. And due to some recent news reports on counterfeit money, I need to get one of those pens the clerks in stores use to check out the paper money you hand them. Trouble is I am too absent minded to remember to use it at all, let alone before I walk out of a s
  10. Happy Birthday Cts. May you be blessed with a long life filled with good health, happiness, and wealth. God bless everyone.
  11. Thanks Marty, for a good laugh with those. God bless everyone.
  12. Thanks for the warning and the link. Strange comments on that link. Seems like the commentators go there to fight those who are trying to alert them to the coming troubles from the spyware/malware fields. Shoot the messenger seems to be the way people there would rather react, instead of with gratitude to one who warned them, rather than shoot the garbage slimeballs who put their dirty dogpoop on a person's private or corporate computer without permission. I can't see why people are so malevolent towards those who are trying to help others. I don't know which is worse, the spyware/malware or t

    Spring?

Yikes TT, those are awfully tall snow banks. I have only seen that high a snow bank when we took the train across the Washington Cascades to Spokane years ago. I wondered how they ever kept the tracks plowed with nowhere to put the snow. Well I have good news for us in the NW, our winter rains have finally started. I think it was Spring Break that set things back to normal. We seldom miss raining out holidays etc here and this year that is finally working in our favor. We have had about three fouths of an inch of rain, and lots on the way with a storm coming right at us for this weekend (mayb
  14. Thanks murtu for the reminder about water, I do drink alot of coffee, but don't always remember to drink lots of just plain water too. It is good for those with back trouble too, and as you said helps with headaches, also good for the brain. Oh my, I wonder if that is what's wrong with my memory, not drinking enough water? Another thing I am doing is eating a lot of celery. I started it because I had real high blood pressure, and the "water pill" the Dr put me on made me extremely dizzy, faint etc. So I stopped it, and before my next appointment, I read an old pamphlet from a health newslett
  15. Hello sceeter, Welcome to these boards. Glad to have you here. I think you will find this a much more relaxed place to be than G4. Plus we have an arcade! Look just under the BestTechie banner for it. Also on the next line down there is a handy "View New Posts" option, to check every time you come over for what's new since you were here last. So come sit down, even have a cup of coffee with us, in our new BestTechie cafe' in the Open Chat section. God bless everyone.
  16. I miss things on view new messages sometimes when I time out on my isp or have to quit to do something before I have read all the new posts, so missed this one. That's funny that he seems to think we would just try out a show with that wierd a title. Actually if it was on the SciFi channel, we might. Ha Ha. Kind of sounds like a good SciFi title but don't tell G4 that or they will attempt to either buy out that channel and ruin it, or do a game/movie with that title. Sigh!!! It is funny that he places the name of the show as a possibility for Comedy Central, or the Cartoon Network. That is
  17. Hello again everyone. Now to sit down with a steaming hot cup of coffee, and enjoy the boards. Was on earlier, but got sidetracked before I got to the cafe. So now I'm back for a few minutes. Yes the walking thing is what I have been doing this winter. Only I do mine indoors. I have a "Power Walker" glider type walker here in the computer room. Started out with just doing it while I was doing updates, if you have dialup you know how long that can take, now I do it other times too. My hubby started doing short exercise breaks, five or ten minutes at a time several times a day, so I also am try
  18. Sorry about it not working for some of you. ??? I think it was fun, but sure didn't believe the Italian Greyhound it gave me. So tried it a 2nd time changing a few personality choices, it was worse... a Lapland Spits. So 3rd try, well that wasn't any better, a Tibetan Terrier. Then a Pomerean (sp?). Last try was a Belington Terrier. I finally gave up on it ever correctly identifying my Border Collie/Shelty mix id. You know they are great herders, protective, loyal, bossy, independent, naggy!!! Fits me to a T (and that T doesn't stand for Terrier either!) My hubby wasn't to keen on the game,
  19. Liz, Not only back up the stuff like what was said earlier, but do your favorites list too. I don't know about you, but I have dozens of favorites links that I would be so upset to lose!!! Now for some unknown reason, Microsoft didn't make Favorites easy to find. So here are the directions someone (Sultan, I think) gave over on G4 awhile back. To find Favorites: Click on Start, then Run, then type in the name Favorites or Favorites Folder, then Ok and Windows will find it and open it up. Then here is the weird part. Go up to the Folder icon at the very top left name bar (not address bar icon)
  20. I use Norton, so can't say what to do with Mcafee, but I would not lower my defenses for any reason. Wait for the fix from them. And is this something that could be added to permissions, though that doesn't sound right for an installed program. It should recognize it as OK without doing anything. I hope you get it solved. One way is to get your kid to switch to a different game, one that does work. I have seen other game problems over on G4, seems like the designers rush to get the game out the door without always making it completely compatable with other software. At the price of the game
  21. Thanks Sultan for an interesting albeit scary article. I think as things worsen on all browsers, operating systems, and email too, that maybe security protection services will advance at a greater usuage pace. I hope so anyhow. I still talk to people around town (and this is a high tech metro area!!!) who do not have any security at all, no antivirus, no firewall, no antispyware, no Windows updates etc. I am amazed when they say their computers even still work, though most say they have much slower systems nowadays. I just refer them to my favorite tech support boards, and tell them to get cl
  22. Hey Liz: Just like robroy did, cold turkey. Had been thinking about it for many years, and finally decided to do it. Just got up one day, and said this is the day. I had read up on it, and they said the first 72 hrs is when you are going thru niccotine withdrawal. After that it was just getting over the habit of wanting a cigerette. You definately have to make up your mind first. Don't plan a day, because you will smoke yourself to death knowing you plan to stop on that day. I think you will smoke more. First make up your mind you really want to do it. The hardest part is making up your mind a
  23. So how can an isp mess things up that badly without knowing it? And how did they do it? Do they even know what their problem is? Is it fixed? I know I know! Curiosity killed the cat...ooops! Oh well we do have nine lives! Glad you got them to work with you, TK. And look at all that new stuff you got out of them. That's a nice bonus right there. Yes they definitely should pay you back for all the worry, lack of sleep, and general aggravation of it all. Do you suppose they will also throw in a few bucks for those of us who tried to help you solve it too? Or better yet, have them donate to B
  24. That's funny! Thanks! God bless everyone.
  25. I found a cute game from an article on the Oregonian's pet page today that you all might enjoy. It is on the website for a British movie "Gone to the Dogs". Click on either the German Shepherd dog in front of the table, or on "What Dog Are You?" near the bottom right corner of screen. Interactive 10 question quiz with results that may totally surprise you. (Turn your speakers on for buzzers and chimes to go with this.) Gone to the Dogs Have fun with your new toy fido. God bless everyone.
