  6. guys what do think of this? continuous long beeps. then there is nothing in the monitor. video card problem will have one long and 3 short beeps, right? i think the problem sits on the RAM. but video card and RAM were cleaned and resitted well. thanks!
  7. i tested another floppy which i knew was working before,it was my spare.both didnt work.right now,im trying to find someone with a floppy drive that i can borrow. no errors or whatsoever that is popping up. went to device manager > floppy disk controller.it says device working properly. thanks for the replies guys.i'll keep you posted if there is any progress.
  8. yes,it is found in the BIOS,checked it first before booting... thanks! (im getting a bit frustrated at this compt...aarrgghhh )

  10. i tried zonealarm before. i think i'll try sygate thanks!
  11. i got 256MB RAM as well, marty but a 20GB. perhaps what causing the lag are bits of programs trying to launch itself automatically such as AV and firewalls. do you time it from the moment starts up XP or when you get to see your desktop up to the time it has finished launching everything? i guess all systems a re bound to slow down a bit after some time... mine slowed down to a bit but not that slow like yours.
  12. All right,i tired disconnecting > boot > shutdown > reconnect > then boot. but still the comp cannot see the floppy. i think i will try a different IDE cable.although the fact that the light switches ON when i got it backwards mean that my IDE is OK,right? thanks!
  13. i will try that chappy.but probably during the weekends becoz things are kinda hectic now. i'll keep you posted guys! thanks!

  16. okay i know i have checked the device manager and it said that the device is working properly.with the connections, that i will have to try again. post back as soon as i get to try all your suggestions, thanks!!!
  17. thanks,tq! same here marty. got tons of files before when i was in CFH. they are still in here though, but they were more of those troubles that arent encountered frequently.those that are very common,i forgot already.LOLZ
  18. hey, guys, got a fe more problems in hand. my floppy disk failed. i tried putting in a different floppy disk which i knew worked before. but both cannot be detected by windows. i tried reversing the IDE cable thinking i got it wrong, but what happened was that the light just remained lit. i guess that means that i put the IDE in a "backward" position. and that also meant that the IDE was in the right position prior to reversing it. are there anymore things i can check to see what is wrong with my floppy drive? i guess the fact that the light remained ON when i got it backwards means that the MoB
  19. marty,if you wont mind,i would like to use your thread to ask a little about my desktop's appearance. how do i get rid of the color behind the text in my desktop icons? thanks!

  21. so i guess its not just marty and i that are having "memory lapse" eh nice to see you again chappy.
  22. im not sure marty. i guess not having a single computer problem for a long time rusted my techie side of the brain! right now im using a laptop given to me. since this is my first time to own one, expect me to post so many questions about this laptop. right now im trying to bang my head off the wall trying to remember how i made all the tweaks i made in my desktop PC with XP. the other day, someone approached me asking me to teach him to do a clean install - everything starting from booting to floppy up to last part. i gladly said OK, but when i got the pen and was almost about to start, i cant
