This should work sudo apt-get remove package I tried that before I did anything else, but it didn't work. I think that's because I got songbird from a .deb on their site, not through apt-get.

Ok, I fixed my right-click issue with the following: matt@ubuntu:~/.local/share/applications$ rm songbird.desktop But I'd still like a rundown on a better way to uninstall programs I don't get from the repositories.

I'm trying to uninstall Songbird from Ubuntu 7.10. I went through search and deleted all files/folders with 'songbird' in the name, but that doesn't appear to have done it all. When I right-click on a media file, "Open with Songbird" still shows up. What is a better way to go about completely uninstalling applications? How can I remove that from the menu?

I decided to do a screencast for my latest Ubuntu install:

good entry Jeff. I'm personally a fan of: What is the coolest thing you can do using Linux that you can't do with Windows or on a Mac? http://matthewhelmke.net/index.php/2008/02...ows-or-on-a-mac Not quite 50, but whatever...

Pretty Impressive Stuff: http://www.demo.com/watchlisten/videolibra...ctid=1392526707 No firewall configuring, no port forwarding.

Here's a really good video, hosted by Patrick Norton, on how to turn a junk pc into a heavy-duty firewall: http://revision3.com/systm/firewall/

Has anyone used the Enlightenment Windows Manager? I found it today on wikipedia and it looked interesting. Just wanted to know if anyone has any experience with it.

*Matt can think of a few forums that actually insert the ads IN the users' posts JSKY: You wouldn't see the ads.

The ads barely cover the cost to run the server. Domain registration, forum software purchases, time, and labor either come out of Jeff's pocket or from all those that volunteer as staff members or through the help of all the forum membership. Remember when BT was on shared hosting and the site was down for 3 months? Like it's been said, you don't see the banner ads, and this might not be permanent. Considering it is a free support community, I don't think the ads are too much for Jeff to ask for.

I recently formatted my step-dad's laptop and reinstalled XP Home. Since that time, he says he's experienced the following issues: When typing, the cursor randomly jumps around, messing things up. The screen saver will only come up if nothing is running. If he has say, powerpoint open, even if the computer is idle, it will never come up. He has it set to % minutes, and just comes up if he has only the desktop up. Any ideas?

By far the BEST the homepage has ever looked!

Building A Computer/choosing Upgrades
Matt replied to Potato2k4's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
XP (32-bit) won't be able to use 4 gigs. If you get 4 gigs, usually 512MB-1GB of it will be distributed to hardware; and Windows will only see (and use) about 3.5 gigs. -
You've got some pretty cool wallpaper arachnid. Here's the Ubuntu laptop that's running my school server project.

I found this today, really cool: http://infectedproject.com/2007/07/09/forw...-gnome-via-ssh/

Nevermind, I found this script: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd...ber/021729.html #!/bin/bash #---------------------------------------------------- # Change the path above to point to the location on # your computer of either the Bourne shell (sh) or # the BASH (Bourne Again) shell (bash). # # This shell script was written to "batch rename" files # (change the name of many files at once) in the # current working directory. # # For his personal use the author named this script # mvb (MV-Batch) in reference to the mv command # of *nix/Linux (which this script uses). # # Written by:

Hey, I'm looking for a bash script that can scan a directory for all .jpg files, and rename them with a number. I've got 220 images in a fold that I would like to rename 1.jpg through 220.jpg. I've tried using variables and arrays, but I don't know enough about the shell to get this going. Thanks, Matt

Just use Windows Disk Management http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309000/

Need Some Tips On Website Security
Matt replied to Honda_Boy's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
There are some simple ones, such as keep software up-to-date, change default passwords, etc. Security is very dynamic. Does he know how his site was exploited? How much of the site did he write himself? How much is software-based? Did he write anything using SQL? Edit: Just doing a quick search, I can pull up many security holes in his current forum software. According to their website, the latest update is 3.6.8 Patch Level 2. He needs to have that.
