Congrats to the four of you! Well deserved.

Hi shane. I'm about to leave the house and will be out of town for a few days. I'll try this when I get back and let you know how it goes. Thanks so much for the help thus far!

Here's what I've got: matt@linux:~$ cd /etc/firestarter matt@linux:/etc/firestarter$ sudo ./firestarter.sh start Firewall started It needed sudo

Well, I used HackerWatch.org instead. When I had the firewall running manually, all scanned ports would return 'Secure'. On bootup, they do not, the scan does not show them as secure, so I don't believe the firewall was running. I manually started it again.
-
ahhh, I missed that too. Ok, so I've done that, does that mean it should now load on startup?
-
Hi shane, I've gotten here: matt@linux:~$ sudo update-rc.d firestarter.sh defualts usage: update-rc.d [-n] [-f] <basename> remove update-rc.d [-n] <basename> defaults|multiuser [NN | sNN kNN] update-rc.d [-n] <basename> start|stop NN runlvl [runlvl] [...] . -n: not really -f: forceUnsure on what to do now

Hi shane. Yep it fixed it. I booted into recovery mode, changed the permissions on sudoers and removed that line I added. I booted back, and sudo works again. Yay! Now, I still don't have a firewall that loads on startup. Any suggestions on this bit?

There is no root password that I am aware of. By any chance would this help? http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/sudo I think that adding matt ALL= NOPASSWD: /usr/sbin/firestarter was what actually broke it. Too bad I can't edit it any more...
-
I keep trying that, but whenever I do any command with sudo, it says matt@linux:~$ sudo chmod 0440 /etc/sudoers sudo: /etc/sudoers is mode 0640, should be 0440 Edit: ahhh, lol no sudo anymore.....
-
Maybe I'm missing something really obvious here: matt@linux:~$ chmod 0440 /etc/sudoers chmod: changing permissions of `/etc/sudoers': Operation not permitted matt@linux:~$ sudo chmod 0440 /etc/sudoers sudo: /etc/sudoers is mode 0640, should be 0440
-
matt@linux:~$ ls -l /etc/sudoers -rw-r----- 1 root root 446 2007-08-01 23:31 /etc/sudoers
-
Yeah, that's what I thought too, but when I try I still get: matt@linux:~$ sudo chmod -w /etc/sudoers sudo: /etc/sudoers is mode 0640, should be 0440

Hi shanenin, thanks for the help. I believe that I was able to change the chmod of the file and edit it successfully. However, I got this: root@linux:/home/matt# gedit /etc/sudoers (gedit:8125): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed. I ignored that, and went ahead and edited the file. Now I'm getting: matt@linux:~$ sudo su sudo: /etc/sudoers is mode 0640, should be 0440 matt@linux:~$ Did I break something?

I installed the Firestarter Firewall, but it appears that it does not start when I boot up. I was reading the FAQ here: http://www.fs-security.com/docs/faq.php#trayicon But when I try to add the line matt ALL= NOPASSWD: /usr/sbin/firestarterto /etc/sudoers it says: You are trying to save the file on a read-only disk. Please check that you typed the location correctly and try again. I was told I need to change permissions somewhere. How do I do that? Thanks!

Hi shanenin, I fixed it. Just went into synaptic, checked the 'Broken' filter, and told it to complete remove those broken packages (which were part of Compiz). I was planning on removing Compiz anyway, so now all is good. As for your other questions... Nope, everything with Compiz installed fine and I didn't edit sources.lst. Thanks
-
I was messing around with Compiz yesterday, which I probably shouldn't have done just yet. Now this morning I went from Applications > Add/Remove. The progress bar started rolling as it checked for installed and available applications, then it threw this at me: I did the last bit to update and install, but it didn't fix it. I'm not sure how to check the permissions and correctness of /etc/apt/sources.list or how to check for broken packages with synaptic. Edit: I should probably mention that I'm on the latest Ubuntu with Gnome

Installed Ubuntu today.

By default, all popular Web browsers assume the HTTP protocol. In doing so, the software prepends the 'http://' onto the requested URL and automatically connect to the HTTP server on port 80. However, for whatever reason, many servers require the www subdomain. The www subdomain is redundant and time consuming, but it is simply that many servers need it. In most cases, example.net and www.example.net are both valid methods of reaching this website. Many servers default to this. In others, www.example.net is a valid address, but it redirects all traffic to example.net. In your issue, it ap

The tool recommended by the poster is a known rogue tool. It is not advised to download or run on your computer. More info: http://spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

Its actually OTMoveIt. Yeah, its similar to killbox, but is better at moving folders and doesn't run into some of the errors that Killbox gets. I still use killbox.

I was reading about this too. It's called '7' right now because XP was windows version 5.xxx... Vista is 6.xxx... and so you can see where 7 comes from. As for 7 gigs of Ram, I hadn't heard that one. geez. And ya... we'll see if its out by 2010; wasn't Vista supposed to launch in 2004?

Hi shanenin. UploadMalware was started by Atri of Atribune.org (The creator of VundoFix and ATF-Cleaner). How it works is when you send a file to them, he or one of the other experts on staff (such as therock247uk or rmurphy) take the file and analyze it. They scan it with a bunch of different scanners and if needed, disassemble the file to see what all it does. Then, they will either contact you via PM at the forums you reside (you can specify that in the comments when submitting) or other means if they know you personally.
