yeah, thats the kinda of stuff that makes me want to learn more....but i don't know.... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hang in there, murtu52! Linux is worth the effort! I had a similar situation happen to me when I first tried to install Slackware on my Plll 500. I partitioned my hard drive, set up my partitions then went to install the software, but, my @#*%ing CD ROM drive couldn't read the slack install cd. I tried swapping in another cd rom drive that didn't work either (BIOS issues). I finally gave up and installed Mandrake on my Plll and it worked great. I've since installed Slack

Any time I find myself grumbling about struggling with some configuration issue with one of my Linux boxes I remind myself why I started to use Linux in the first place. 1. Low cost. 2. Stable, secure. 3. Open source. 4. Fun......I'm never bored, there's always something new to learn. Also, when I read articles like this I'm happy I'm a Linux user.

To add to what shanenin said Ubuntu mutes your sound on start-up. I know you've already probably done the following. Click on Applications------------->Sound & Video------->Volume Control. Then mess around with the settings, also click on the speaker icon in the upper right corner of your Ubuntu desktop. Good luck with this Efwis

Good luck man! I've never had much luck with Compaqs and Linux; too much proprietary hardware. Yes, Mandriva is excellent at identifying hardware, it found all of the hardware on my old Dell Optiplex GX1, Plll 500 including my legacy sound card.

Man, that's a drag! I think you've got a few options. 1. Go to the Knoppix forums like shanenin suggested and see if anyone has figured out how to make your graphics card work. However, it's not a good sign if you've heard that it isn't compatible. 2. Find a version of Linux that is compatible with your hardware. I've had to do this on many occasions when the distro I want to use does not work with my sound card, cd rom drive, etc. Many distros post hardware compatibility lists at their websites. Don't be discouraged by this! You learn the most about Linux when things break, to quote my

Hi Liz, Thanks for the kind words Yes, I'm very careful when I talk to my Dad about tech, I try not to get too involved with my descriptons.......heh-heh when I do he gets all glassy-eyed and changes the subject. I enjoy helping others with technology, it's a hobby of mine. However, my Dad can sometimes be frustrating to work with as he never listens to my advice about tech I've been lucky with computers, I have a friendly co-worker who has taught me a lot about computers. I try to return the favor and give a little bit back to people. Take it easy, Liz!

Thank you, Chappy It's good to see you too! I had a ton of work to do in June so I had to hibernate for some time to plow through it. It's good to be back. I'm going on holidays this Friday and will be visiting my Dad. He's got an old windows 98 unit and is looking to buy a new computer, so I'll be helping him to pick one out. Yes, I also spend quite a bit of time helping my Dad with his computer.

I'm not an expert in Knoppmyth. I think iccaros or shanenin have run that distro. They might be able to help you. It sounds like x windows has been mis-configured, I'd try to go into your x windows settings. In slackware after you log-on as root at the command prompt you can change your x windows settings by using the command xorgconfig Does your distro recognize your graphics card? Good luck, man! I'd also try to go to your distro website see if they have a list of supported graphics cards.
