Hey, tenmm Yeah, it's good to kick back and have a few cold ones with my Dad, he's getting on in age, he turned 80 this year. Heck, I'll be 48 soon:-) Good to hear you guys will have the pizza boxes and beer bottles cleaned prior to my return, heh-heh. Yes, the 266 works okay, albeit a bit slow. I spent the first day defragging his HD, removing spyware,etc. The 266b does the job. Good to see you, tenmm!

Further to what jcl said I haven't had my ubuntu box break yet using synaptic or the usual upgrade method. But, it's good to know it can be broken. I had a thought, back when I was running redhat 9 when gnome was booting up you would have a choice about which kernel you could boot. I haven't tried this, but, I notice that ubuntu has a 5 second delay as it boots up, I wonder if you can hit escape or something and get some options, boot into your old kernel?

I've got a BA in Psychology and am currently employed as a grade 4/5 teacher in an elementary school. I have no formal computer training. In my spare time at school (mostly after school) I function as un-paid tech support in my school helping staff and students; I enjoy helping kids to learn about computers. My school is a weird mixture of old macs, some OS X units, and a lot of old wintel boxes (we've got about 100 computers in my school). I'm curious about computers, it keeps me sane in the work place:-)

Well, i'm pretty good with hardware (at least better with hardware than software), but as for distros, i'm totally clueless <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Once you've determined that your laptop will run Linux I suggest that you give one of the rpm based distros a try. Ubuntu, Mandriva or Fedora are easy to install and configure. The websites for these distros have a lot of support documentation; I suggest that you read up on how to install Linux, configuration, terminology, file systems. As you learn more you'll feel confident as you prepare to install Linux.

Heya hitest, I haven't seen this problem after multiple installs on several different PCs...Has this happened on all your installs? Efwis, Since I have less knowledge of linux than hitest and shanenin, not sure that I can come up with anything for a solution. The only thing I can think of is maybe PCM is muted in alsa...I think you'd still be able to watch movies and play CDs with that muted. I'd try opening "alsamixer" in terminal and see if anything is muted (MM on the sliders)...If there is anything muted, use the arrow keys to select that one and unmute using "m" key hope ya' get it workin
