COD= cash on delivery <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I know, I just couldn't resist..... Wait, Mac's outside again????? Remember what happened last time he escaped? I didn't let him out, nope, not me. Liz <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Oops, sorry for being patronizing.....this is a funny thread!

Just be careful. I looked at the GCC source a few years ago and woke up three days later in the hospital. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> LOL

Right, and if you don't know any geeks besides yourself, you'll have enough material for a lifetime of making people go away or at least to watch their eyes glaze over. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> LOL Well-said, tictoc! People hate others who let everyone know that they are l33t. I never speak about Linux when I'm at work as co-workers look at you like you're crazy (probably true). Being very knowledgeable about Linux does not make you better than "mere mortals." I know a little bit about Linux, but, there's always someone who knows more than I do (lots in fact).

Allow me to disagree with the venerable Leo. That kind of thinking leads you to the mentality that gives rise to wonderful humorous fodder for sites like funroll-loops.org. I have my own theories on the best ways to 'learn how computers work,' but that wasn't the intent of this thread. Don't start out with unreasonable expectations; Linux is not really inherently any more or less secure than a properly administered NT box. Notice the operative phrase in that sentence: "properly administered." In most noteworthy cases computer security is the merit or the fault (whatever the case may be) o

Thanks for the reminders, Chappy. I'm very happy to be here. This is a place that I would let my 11 year old surf to. Yes, indeed! Let's get back to normal:-)

Read it once again, I think Mike is making a good hearted humorous welcome, mateys, with a teeny tiny reminder to keep the calm friendly atmosphere here Shiver me timbers! Arrrggghhhh!! (oooh, can we get a pirate smiley? that would be so cool!) From fellow member of the motley crew. Liz <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well-said, Liz! Besttechie.net is known for a coffee-house atmosphere, laid back friendly. I like it here. Aaaaaarrrrrgggghhhhh, matey!!

Knoppix is a great live linux CD. It also has a great diagnostic feature. That is, once you boot Knoppix and are running Linux the CD will identify all of your hardware for you (it has wonderful hardware detection) and then you'll know if all of your computer components are Linux ready in case you wish to install Linux on your HD. Knoppix is a good way to safely get your feet wet with Linux without messing up your Windows install as shanenin said.

Very well said, bearskin. It is time to welcome all new people into our family and move on. I love Besttechie.net

Agreed. Being treated as a number is hard to take. That's why I like Besttechie.net; there is a family feel to this forum. I'm not as angry as I was yesterday. Actually it feels pretty good to be free of G4.
