  1. Hi All,

Preparing for SP2 install, ready except for one big thing....Son installed some updates in the past couple months (he was told not to update anything that referred to SP2 yet) and at the time of installation, SP2 wasn't in the description of the updates--we assumed they were "Normal Windows Security Updates".

Anyways....I poked around in the "Ad/Remove Programs" box and discovered a dozen or so of these Hotfixes said SP2 on them--apparently fixes for SP2.

Sooo, should I remove these Hotfixes before I install SP2? Thanks, Liz

  2. Hi Jimras,

As a cheap Scotch Bohemian, I hate to see you waste the money you spent on your new Norton Subscription--and I read that Norton can sometimes be fussy when it comes to uninstallation, although you've been around enough to probably uninstall it correctly. Have you checked the Norton site to see if there is a tweak that may make it work with SP2?

If you do decide to switch, I have heard good things about AVG, but here is another option to think about. I have used Mcafee for the past 4 years free--kinda. In January and right after taxtime (sooo, SOON!) Mcafee goes on sale "free after rebates" usually at Staples, Office Max or Circuit City. Watch those Ads on Sunday! For me, Mcafee has a super easy interface, has automatic updates and hopefully works well--catches some spyware, too.

  3. (walks back into the kitchen) AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!! how put this here?

Oops, that was my fault. The kitchen looked lonely so I was inspired to make a batch of Beef Stew....by the way, can you use a dinner cook? :)

And welcome back, glad you picked the lock!! Liz

  4. Hi Barb,

Thank you so much for the "Heads Up" as Son uses "plain ol' regular MSN Messenger" and I was able to warn him and his friends about this new gadget!

    And Hi Sidekickcat,

According to Son "to my knowledge, MSN Messenger is not installed automatically on operating systems, its something like AIM, where you have to download it from an internet site"

Now Windows Messenger is something different--it comes on the operating system (at least XP) and they "look almost exactly alike". I read bad things about Windows Messenger and although Son did not uninstall it, he disabled it somehow--and we don't remember how......Yo, Experts???? :o

    And Hi John,

    What's an LOP?

  5. I am pretty much prepared for SP2--mainly done except waiting for Son to finish a couple of school assignments on the idiot box in case all does not go well.

This is how I see it---M$ can DOWNLOAD the SP2 onto your computer and you get a "downloads are ready for your computer" icon in your task bar, (I've been ignoring that for a week) but you don't have to INSTALL it till you're ready--besides, you have to accept a licensing agreement before it installs anything. I could be completely wrong, so please correct me if I am! And as buggy as SP2 and spyware is, it would be stupid on M$ part to force an installation without giving the consumer a chance to clean up spyware.

And, the list of programs that "won't work" on SP2 has dwindled down to only a few---but last time I looked at that list, there were a couple AVs (Norton in particular--and its expensive!) that wouldn't play nice and that would keep me from installing it.

The thing that really bugs me is, supposably, you can't get "regular updates" until you install the dern thing. That isn't very fair to those who already know SP2 won't work on their systems, like Jimras.

I really feel for the folks who don't know anything about all this---my daughter would just blindly install the thing! I consider myself lucky for finding places like this to be informed on what problems to correct and expect. Liz

  6. Hi Murtu52,

In my experience (until Son said, "MOM don't respond to them!") what you did by "unsubscribing" often does work! Usually I would only get one more email which I would ignore, and thats the end of it. Guess it depends on the Spammer :) Liz

  7. Hi Sidekickcat,

The kids on board can probably give you better advice, but Daughter bought a "new to her" car which didn't have a CD player. She went to Circuit City and had a CD/tape player installed. They were running a free installation sale at the time, so when you do take the plunge, watch those ads. Best Buy runs free installation sometimes, too (and sooo much better than giving that task to Hubby, right?). One thing I can say with Circuit City, even though I have had horrible luck with buying their specials (they were always out of stock) she had wonderful results with their service. After a couple of weeks, her player didn't work right and they replaced it on the spot, no questions asked.

And we just got a DVD player last Christmas--our non cable ready tv (it works great, why replace it?) needed an adapter to use it, though! And I have yet to use the thing. Ahhh, what we do for our kids! :)

Shadow Thomas--they are recordings, aren't they??? Soooo, Records they are!

  8. Yes, I work HARD on my vehicle! I call the mechanic, drive it down, wait for his call, get out that visacard, pick it up, drive it home again. Actually, I wish I knew more about those black greasy shapes under the hood, repair is expensive!

If you could be a fly on a wall, whose wall would you want to be sitting on? (I would have loved to hear a former boss explain to his boss why I quit....)

  9. Is there one song that you will NEVER get sick of listening to?

Today in the grocery store I heard "Raspberry Beret" by Prince. Yeah, I know, its a corny one, but you know what? It sounded just as cheerful as it did all those years ago when it was new. Still makes me smile. :) Liz

PS--and I would love to see Pink try jazz--she just seems to have "that voice" wouldn't she be good?

  10. Hi Pomp,

I echo the "welcome and goodbye" Just remember sunscreen, young'un, sunscreen! That Florida sun is stronger than you think. (and if you get burnt, ibuprophen) Have a great time, I'm so jealous. Liz

  11. Hi all,

Last week and again tonight, I tried Disk Cleanup (windowsxp) The first box came up and even though it says "this may take a few minutes", it seemed to be stuck at "3 bars", or "calculating....compressing files (something of that nature) for about 15 minutes. This process used to take only about 30 seconds. I cancelled and closed it.

Last week, I was showing a newbie how to do it, it was pokey, I cancelled and closed it. Computer got sluggish. One of the kids (we had a housefull) brought up the Task Manager and he declared "Disk Cleanup is using up 99% CPUs" and ended it through the Task Manager Processes Page (after I cancelled and closed the thing). By the way, I did the same as he did tonight with the Task Manager and rebooted....

Am I just not allowing it enough time or is something out of whack? I hope this question even makes sense! Remember, be simple, I'm a noob :) Thanks, Liz

Edit: Went to Microsoft support where I found this:

    WORKAROUND

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. (and instructions for the workaround)

I do NOT like what it says about not guaranting this nor the use at your own risk part. Pretty irresponsible, I say. Is there another way??

  12. time for a change. can somebody talk about something good happening in their life.

    PLEEEASE! :D

Ok Macmarauder, hopefully this will get a few laughs. Today I was fiddling with the CD player in the "new to me" car.....not used to where everything is yet, and Son said, "well at least you're not as bad as Gramma and Papa"

A couple of years ago, my folks (the Punk Music Gramma....) got a car with their very first CD player in it. My sister bought them a CD so they could try it out.

A couple days later, Mom called, "I have a couple of questions about the CD player"

    1. "When the CD ended, we tried to rewind it, but we couldn't find the reverse button"

    2. "So we decided to listen to the other side. We flipped it over and put the CD in and nothing happened. Is it broken?"

Absolutely true story. And of course we still tease them about it! :P Liz

  13. Hi Sidekickcat,

I am HOPING Spybot S$D got the coolweb out, or perhaps it didn't fully install (thinking firewall blocked most of it???) simply because the people who wrote about it were having all sorts of problems with their computer, especially with their homepage getting hijacked and "strange" things in their Favorites file. I had none of these symptoms. But I could be wrong, and if I am Someone Correct Me!!!!

Thanks also for the immunization tip--I think Son did that because I discovered I could NOT pronounce the word "immunize" and the boys were laughing at me, but I wrote him a note to check.

    Thanks!!! Liz

PS: Son did immunize the Spybot---and I do remember reading on the latest set of updates, "Coolweb...whatever-it-is" was on the list to fix. We ran it again and it wasn't there--so HOPEFULLY it was squashed, but again, if it may not be, someone let me know! Thanks, Liz

  14. Ohhhh, cell phones and driving!!!! Got my kids tracfones for Christmas (for emergencies--and I'm cheap) Every time they call me I ask, "are you driving???" I saw a bumper sticker that said "Hang Up and Drive". I want one...Liz

  15. hi all,

Update time--Son and I installed and ran AdAware, Spybot Search and Destroy (that one sent us a little loopy, THANKS JEFF for your assistance in the chatroom!) and Spyware Blaster (that one was easy!). With exception of a lot of confusion on my part with Spybot, all went well. Glad we did it as we had a Coolweb......thing and I've read folks have had terrible problems with that. Our computer ran fine with this rascal, so we were lucky! *knocks wood*

Still have to do this stuff to the "possessed by a demon Gateway" but at least that has Windows98 so no deadline for SP2! Be prepared for questions on that awful beast, but hopefully the Dell is clean!!

Again, thank you all so much for your help, advice and encouragement with "spring cleaning". Really don't know what I would have done without you!

    Liz

  16. Had to sign back on after reading the paper today. Front page article about gas prices--

"Thursday, crude tumbled nearly $2 a barrel... and gasoline futures fell nearly 11 cents before slightly rebounding on the NY Mercantile Exchange.

"Will that have any impact on prices at the pump?

"'Probably not,', said Phil Flynn, a senior market analyst.....'The shock value of $2 gasoline has gone away. It's a part of life.'"

Well that just ticks me off!!!! Way back (before a lot of you were born!) when the sugar price shot up, did it go back down? Noooooooo, because it was assumed "us dumb sheep" would accept it, of course. Same thing with coffee, lettuce and tomatoes. The weather crisis resolved itself, crops were back to normal and the prices stayed high. And the oil industry is doing the same thing with gas.

I also discovered that I can't type worth beans when I'm angry. Hope I fixed the mistakes. Phew, ok my rants over.... <_< Find... the...comics...now....Liz
