...well i had a 160gb(Maxtor) fail after just over a year(out of warranty by a month)..but it was an internal...from the anecdotal stories i've seen on a number of boards..i seems Maxtor has recently experienced quality issues..as you yourself report.... i've switched to Seagate..mostly because of the 5 year warranty and because they're so quiet..

That works too, if you still can, also get the Microsoft updates for that os. I don't know if you still can or not. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> good point...bearskin might know if it's still supported..but i'm sure the updates are available somewhere..if not on the auto update feature....

Why not just back up all critical data and clean install the os...start fresh...install all the previously mentioned utilities..and show your friend how to maintain his machine...

..just a quick update...finally found/made time to get and install the case fan....my local pc club had a nice vantec stealth 80mm with a 3-4 pin power adapter included for $12.99.. installed in about 5-min and can already see about a 8-10 degree drop in both HD temps.. pretty cool...
