  1. I want to see the dirty version :-)
  2. I would try running memtest. it can be downloaded here. If you have any of the newer versions of knoppix(3.4 does not have it, but 3.7+ does) or ubunutu, memtest is included on them.
  3. you can check to see if you have any service packs installed by typing this into the run command: sysdm.cpl
  4. I would use this one. You can just put it on a cd or usb drive. You do not need an internet connection to use it http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en
  5. I was always under the impression that electric used as heating is very expensive. Even if your gas bill goes down, I would think your electric bill would go up more. Maybe natural gas in your area is more expensive then what we pay in the U.S.
  6. Today I was messing around with both outlook and OE. I have since deleted all accounts and all email messages from both of these programs. I am still getting that annoying email alert on my windows login screen. It says I have one unread message. Any idea how to get rid of this?
  7. I recently used nlite to slipstream my disc, it worked nice http://www.nliteos.com/ it has all kinds of neat features. You can add service packs, drivers, programs(like firefox). You can also make a disk to do unattended installs with all of the settings done for you, including your products key.
  8. since your changing it to a new motherboard, xp will freak out. It won't let you do it.
  9. If I understood the post correctly, it won't get that far along with the install cd if the harddrive is plugged in. He has kind of a catch-22.
  10. I like the idea of the uniqueness of gift wrap paper. For simplicity and professionalism I think I will just use a control number.
  11. this is pretty easy to do from the command line. In all honesty, I am not sure how to do it using gnome or kde. The general idea is to make a mount point(a place to access) for your windows files. then mount(attach) your windows partition to that point. Below is a nice little guide. Feel free to ask any questions. http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Fedora_fc5#How...rs_to_read_only just a couple of notes "/dev/hda1" is referring to the first partition of you primary harddrive. It is assumbing that is where windows is. You may need to adjust. After following those commands, just navigate to "/media/win
  12. are you currently dual booting both windows and linux on the same hardrive? Are you mainly trying to get your data moved to your linux partition or on to a portable harddrive?
  13. linux could definitely get the data for you. Do you have a portable harddrive? What version on linux do you have? As to your windows problem, I would try and remove all the extra hardware I could including the harddrive. At that point I would be curious to see if that would get you further along in the install(until it gives you an error about no harddrive).
  14. If I was not concerned with looking neurotic, I could staple a one dollar bill to each certificate. That bill would have a unique serial number, which I would keep records of. In all honesty, I will probably just individually number and sign each certificate.
  15. that makes me think, I could use cdrs with data on them. edit added later// hmm, they could still copy my discs edit added later// I know i need a complex activation plan based on wga(to protect my new customers) :-)
  16. I am in an auction that is sponsored by my local newspaper. For every dollar of service or product I let them auction for me, I get one dollar of money to use for advertising. The product I am auctioning are 15 gift certificates for 3 hours computer labor(valued at $120). So long as the reserve of 50% of value is met people can win my certificates. The cool thing is I get full value to use for advertising. The idea is for 45 hours of my time, I will get $1800 to use for advertising in my paper. Plus the 15 people who win my certificates will become long term customers(assuming they like my ser
  17. Thats interesting. I have used the key finder plugin, which reads the registry hive. What are you doing that you need to access the restore points?
  18. I used this technique today to reload a windows 2000 machine. I had a machine that came with an oem 2000 product key. I only had an msdn windows 2000 disc(this is the same as retail). I modded the settup.ini and I installed with no problem.
  19. I used it today to retrieve a xp product key from a system with a bad mobo. After I installed the new motherboard, I was able to boot it and use bartpe to grab the key.
  20. I have always bounced back between gnome and kde. One of the things I liked about kde was the klipper tool, it it just a clipboard that allows you to save multiple items. One thing I dislike about kde is the fonts. I could not seem to figure out the correct way to get fonts to be the correct size with kde and some gtk apps like firefox(I think its gtk based). The fonts would always be very small. I went back to gnome and tried to run the klipper. It runs just great in the gnome tray just like with kde. For now I think i will use gnome. by the way I love the spell check feature in firefox-2.0 :
  21. I have noticed grifsoft servers have been slow lately. It usually takes multiple trys at different times to get my download to start.
  22. I just realized firefox-2.0 hass built in spell checking. Wow that is really cool :-)
  23. exactly, that is a great idea. I think i did a tail -f /var/log/messages(learned that from you), I don't remember seeing anything that helped.
