  1. your firmware may be giving you a different menu system then mine, but I bet it is close. On the top where it says "static ip" to the right, you should have a down pointing arrow. This is for a drop down menu. DHCP should be one of the options. by the way, who set it to use static originally?
  2. you can manually check the setting by accessing the router through the web interface. Type this address into your address bar 192.168.1.1 for the user name enter: user for the password enter: admin (this is the default password) on the home page you should see your settings to use dhcp for both your wan and lan.
  3. the default settings for the router are to use dhcp. You could just reset it with the pinhole in the back. edit added later// before you follow that advice, you may want to be a little more specific to your problem. I may giving you faulty advice(based on the limited amount of info given)
  4. Definitely test the ram. The ubuntu disk contains the program memtest86. When you first boot it, you have to tell it to load the memtest86 program instead of booting the ubuntu kernel.
  5. I was reading over customer reviews for flash drives. This one inparticular mentioned the fact it is not bug resistant. I thought this was funny, maybe that is just me because I am from a colder climate without a bad bug problem. Roches give me the creaps.
  6. Is this a new computer that you have built, could the memory be faulty? What exactly happened when it crashed, did you get any specific error? If I remember correctly ubuntu gives you the option of using a text based installer, I would try that.
  7. Thats interesting. I guess I have heard the term "spatial file manager", but never took the time to read or understand what it meant. I am sure I could get used to it, but don't really want to.
  8. thanks, the "always use browser" option works nice. You would think that would be the default setting. It seems more natural, but I guess that is just because I am used to using windows explorer or konqueror.
  9. I am back to using gnome, and the file manager, nautilus. The default behavior when navigating using it is to open a new window for every directory change. If I need to go three or four levels down, I end up with 3 or 4 open windows. Is their a way to change the settings that don't open multiple windows(like kde and explorer do by default)? This is not a big deal, 90% of the time I use the shell to look at files, but on occasion I like to point and click.
  10. hitest, Do you guys have grizzlys there?
  11. I wasn't trying to start a controversy. I use msconfig on client computers on a regular basis. I thought I was being irresponsible. By the way, I installed codestuff. It seems the same as msconfig, but in a different package. Just my opinion. If I read petes quote properly, he said that using codestuff is also stopping unused dlls from being loaded into memory. If that is the case, that is a great plus. I wonder if that really happens.
  12. I am definitely impessed. Using "nero recode", I converted three movies from dvd to mpeg4 format in about 1.5 hours. My old athlon xp took more then this amount of time to do just one movie. If I tried to encode just one movie it would only average about 65% cpu usage. So long as I do two movies at a time it uses 100% of the cpu available.
  13. as the OP, i was referring to this definition With that said, I am also interested if msconfig, or using hjt to delete startup entries can causue memory to be wasted in other less obvious ways, not necessarily "memory leaks"(wiki definition)
  14. I regularly use hjt or msconfig to stop programs from starting. Does this really cause memory leaks like I so often hear people say? Is this only a problem with pre windows 2000 machines? I kind of think this is a old wives tale. Whats your opinion?
  15. For now onboard video is doing good running vista. One nice thing about the upgrade is pci-express. Most all of the cheaper video cards need pci-express to run. The older agp video cards are getting expensive. If business picks up, i may be upgrading to a nice video card sometime in January.
  16. both of those computers are gone. Next job I get I will try that.
  17. that is a good point. A good reboot will reclaim lost ram. Even with XP, this can be useful.
  18. I am not sure about the java update, I don't remember getting it. As to the sites above, did you click on the download link? That is where I was having problems.
  19. I kind of suspected settings might be the problem. I would not think java script would be disabled by default. I will have to mess around with it for a bit.
  20. The last two computers I reloaded, I decided to install IE7. I ended up removing it from both and reverting back to IE6. It seems that javascript was broken. For example if I clicked on the red "download" button on this page it would not do anything. I did see an error message on the bottom left corner of IE7. Using IE7 on my vista box works just fine with this webpage. If you guys are running xp with IE7, I am kind of curious to see if you also are having problems with this page
