  1. Did you notice if the computer posts(beeps) still when booting it? It is looking like the motherboard. To be sure, disconnect everything, including your harddrive and cdrom, It should still boot to a basic bios screen. To rule out the memory, try another stick of memory, or test the memory you have in a different machine. Look at the capacitors on the motherboard, see if the tops are round and bulging, or even leaking.
  2. 256 on a windows 95 machine. Holy that is alot. I bet that machine just came with 16 or 32mbs
  3. I did not even charge him for doing all of that. He just was charged a markup on the software. I try not to give to much free away, if you do people always expect it.
  4. I had a gentleman want me to give his new toshiba laptop a look over before he started using it, along with installing av/spyware removal software(I installed "spysweeper with antivirus"). It was running boggy and unresponsive out of the box. It had over 60 processes running with 350mb of memory used while just having IE open. I disabled over 30 of the startup items, then rebooted. That shaved off over 150 mbs of shit. Besides wasting memory, all of that crap needs to load when you login. I also think one of those processes was conflicting, because the system was not responding. I googled a fe
  5. You have nothing to loose by trying to flash it. Linux deserves better hardware then that(just giving you a hard time) How much memory do you have installed?
  6. Your probably correct. I was calling within the hour of the hanging time. Whe the guy finally answered the phone he was really flustered.
  7. normally I expect to wait on hold for support, but when it comes to windows activation, I have never been left on hold. This was like the first time in 70-100 phone calls(for activation) that this ever happened .
  8. Thanks for all the good advice :-)
  9. Finally somebody answered. I was starting to think it was not going to happen.
  10. I have been trying to activate XP on two separate occasions tonight. Since it is an dell oem activation, I need to talk to a live person. I tried the first time and was on hold for 15 minutes before accidentally hanging up. I tried about 30 minutes later, I have been on hold for about 20 minutes. Until tonight I have never been on hold for more then a few seconds. Something must be down or broken.
  11. He will be 15 in march. I try to give her the benefit of the doubt and trust her. I think she makes good desisions, but.... I got the impression she was lying to me. Thier is a setting in my space to just allow "friends", but what constitutes a myspace "friend" ?
  12. My daughter and I kind of got into an argument about myspace. She was trying to tell my wife that she only talks to friends with it. My point was what determines a myspace friend. Is a "friend" any stranger that she declares as a friend. Could some of her myspace "friends" be strangers? Any insight into how myspace works would be appreciated.
  13. Formatting is definitely easy(actually, you do not need to format, but just delete the partition xp is on) Did you boot from the windows 2000 disk or did you try and run it from within windows XP? I have never tried to downgrade, but would think you could choose install a fresh(new) copy of 2000, and it would ask you to format automatically. If it does not, you will have to format it before running the disk.
  14. formatting them would definitely solve the problem.
  15. a nice relaxing time. what more could a person want :-) Welcome back
  16. I knew O.J. forgot something
  17. you mean you had a directory listed in your path variable before %SystemRoot%\system32 ? If you need that app, just reinstall it, then make sure its directory is listed at the end of the path variable. %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;C:\Program Files\path-to-app
  18. In your case, you may just want to buy one. Building can be a pain, especially if you get some bad parts. Nothing worse then putting together a new computer and not having it boot(it happens).
  19. I agree, powder drugs are horrible to the body, mind and spirit. But criminalizing them causes more problems then if they were legalized. edit added later// sorry for polluting this thread with my political views. It is something I am passionate about.
  20. I would check to see if the paths are set correctly. R-click "my_computer">>properties>>advanced_tab>>environmental variables. Under system variables, you should have a path variable. Double click on the "path" line(so you can see it better, and edit it). Make sure you at least have the path to your system32 and system directory set: %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%; below is what mine looks like: %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\ when you type a command into the shell, it will look for that command in the f
  21. If you are looking for a cheap pc, getting a dell(any oem builder) is the way to go. If you want to build a high end gaming pc, I would recommend building it. For a $1000 you could build a nice system. Is it an option to use your old pc for parts? Do you already have a moniter? As to the system listed above, its nice. You probably could not build one any cheaper.
  22. Thats a nice little system :-) Since you have such a great system, make sure your hardrive is fast also. The hardrive will probably be the bottle neck(for some things) on a system like that. The seagate 7200.10 drives have great benchmarks and they are cheap.
  23. If she just needs to backup one folder, like "my documents", I would reccomend synctoy. If she wants to mirror her whole OS. I would then recconmend acronis true image.
