A Couple Of Questins About Xp And Linux
shanenin replied to jdm's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
I am not sure what chipset that computer uses for drivers, the site listed does not list a 10/100 ehternet driver. Since you have ubuntu installed, boot that, then run the command /usr/sbin/lspci . This should show you what 10/100 ethernet chipset you are using. Then I could help you find the driver. -
Socket 940 is not the same as a socket AM2(they both have 940 pins, but keyed different). Socket 940 is used mainly on servers and uses ddr memory, but socket AM2 uses ddr2 memory. He was correct to say his chip is an AMD Athlon. Socket AM2 boards use both AMD Athlons, and AMD Semprons.

I can't get passed the point that you seem to live out of the main city, yet have access to hi-speed internet(not satellite).

Just a thought. I have nothing against intel, but for well under $200, you could get a fast dual core amd X2 chip with a new motherboard. The following combos will use regular ddr 400 memory(which you probably have) Look at some of these combo deals. These all include both a mother board and a dual core proc http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductCombo...e=10&page=1 Since that is not a retail proc, you will need to buy a heat sink/fan also edit added later// I personally like the first deal for $124. I have had good luck with biostar boards. It also has decent onboard video.
-
That seems reasonable. You may do better with a little more memory. I would also do as Carnevil mentioned. You may be able to track the problem down to a problem process.
-
thats odd. It is not like linux to bog down like that. You could check your memory usage with the free command shane@mainbox ~ $ free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 516192 509944 6248 0 18652 364356 -/+ buffers/cache: 126936 389256 Swap: 498004 7944 490060 the number 389256 is my actual unused memory. If your usused memory(free) is low, that may be your problem.

Even though it is not feeling hot, it may be heat related. Does the fan seem to be running at a fast or slow rate? If the fan is blowing full speed without slowing down, that would indicate that the heat sink is plugged. I would install this application. It monitors both the fan and cpu speeds. It will also control the fan speed. You can set the fan to turn on and off at set temps. edit added later// this program is only compatible if that laptop has a bios version A29 or higher

good eye :-) as garmanma mentioned, make sure you install the ide drivers for the chipset of that card, you should get better performance.

that was great :-)

I have a pretty simple smb.conf file. It may give you some ideas [global] server string = Samba Server %v map to guest = Bad User log file = /var/log/samba3/log.%m max log size = 50 socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192 dns proxy = No hosts allow = 192.168.1. [avi] path = /mnt/media/avi writable = yes [music] path = /mnt/media/music writeable = yes [share] path = /mnt/media/share writable = yes [brighteyed] path = /mnt/media/brighteyed writable = yes

I would think the card would just use the standard ide contoller drivers installed with windows, these drivers should at least be able to detect the hardrive, even if they are not the most optimized.

I have a "Winfast" brand motherboard, with some AMD CPU :-) Have you tried installing windows XP? I have had some computers where Vista would blue screen, but XP ran well.

My friend made me a cd using this method. their are only about 25 updates I still have to do. this also includes flash player installation. I will probably make a new cd soon, that will include most all of the updates.

First log into the router using the address http://192.168.1.1 . After you have logged in, goto administration>>config management. This is the location on my linksys router. Yours may be slightly different. Their is an option to save you router configuration to a file. You can use this saved file in the future to restore your current configuration.

Thanks for the link. Now I can tell the customer with confidence it is not replaceable :-) edit added later// I suppose any modem other then a mini pci would be considered built in(not easily accessible). None the less, I am pretty certain this modem is soldered into the board. This one below I bet would be considered built in. By the way, this image is a modem from a dell inspiron 1100

Thanks for all the opinions. The funny thing is another shop in town told them they would charge $60 for the modem, plus labor to install it. This modem for $60 is not available. I guarantee you nobody local in my town changes out components on motherboards.
-
I wonder if it is detachable underneath? I doubt it, if it was, I would think after searching for parts I would have found it.
-
The few laptops I have taken apart have had replaceable modems. I accepted a job to replace the modem on a compaq presario 2110us(2100 series). So I just spent an hour tearing it down to the motherboard, but, no modem is to be found. I am not able to see any chips even soldered with a modem chipet. I would not think the modem would be on the back side of the motherboard. I am reluctant to remove the mother board. it is not worth breaking something, especially if I am not able to get paid for this job. the picture below shows the telephone jack, it is between the fan and pcmia cardslot. Any su

Need Help Installing A New Video Card
shanenin replied to sceeter32's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
I am guessing you must be far away from your computer, if not, just for kicks, I would try the card in that system(since they have the same components) -
as to typing in the password, that is normal, not to show any characters being typed. The mv command does not give output(unless specified with the -v option), so that means it moved correctly without errors. When you tried it a second time you got an error about the file not being there. This is because you already moved it to the /opt directory. Try the ls command. It will list the contents of a directory ls /opt it should list the file you just moved there
-
Desktop is a directory located in your home directory, not your root directory this command gives the full location of it cd /home/username/Desktop since you are already in your "Home" directory, you can just do this. Note, their is not prevailing "/" cd Desktop http://unixhelp.ed.ac.uk/tasks/cd1.html

Need Help Installing A New Video Card
shanenin replied to sceeter32's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
Can you run the windows vista installer with the card in? You can start the install but cancel it before making any changes. If the installer will run, you can kind of conclude the hardware it ok, but windows is just messed up. If that is the case, you can try a clean install.
