  1. From what I read, It sounds as if you may have a RAM issue. You could try running a RAM testing program. It is not 100% conclusive, but it could be helpful in showing you errors. If your computer has two sticks of ram, try one at a time and see if that helps. If you only have one stick, you may want to reseat it or just try it in the other slot.
  2. The free version of logmein is very similar to gotomypc. It does not have some of the features like remote printing and transferring files. For simple remote control it works just like remote desktop does. You can turn it on and off by simply r-clicking the icon in the system tray and choosing "enable" or "disable".
  3. I don't believe it does based on this. You could use the free version of logmein.
  4. We can't help you with malicious code. This is a violation of our TOS. This thread is closed.
  5. Do you have a local company in your area? They would probably give you the best service.
  6. Your welcome, glad I was able to help :-)
  7. You could try and run Speedfan. it will display detailed data about the hard drive based on the SMART data it produced.
  8. You could try system restore. After the computer boots up, open the task manager, then choose "File", then "New Task(Run..)" . Once the run box opens enter the following command to start system restore c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe Does that laptop have a restore partition? Is it an option to reinstall using a generic xp oem cd(use the key on the bottom of the computer)? edit added later// you can also use the technique of running programs with the task manager in the following way. If any of the programs you used have a quarantine feature, you may want to restore any files they remov
  9. I downloaded Halo(just a demo). I extracted the file and moved it to the application directory. When any other users other then me try and run it, it starts then crashes. What would be different in my account? For what its worth, we are all using standard accounts.
  10. possibly. It may just be a load of windows that is going bad(various reasons). Does it freeze up in safe mode?
  11. I am not sure if the Maxtor Software has all the same features of Acronis. It is probably lacking. When you try and restore from the image that the Maxtor software created, you may not be able to resize the image to use your whole hard drive. It may only restore it to the 304.24 GB size. Then you will have to resize it again. It may just be easier to keep the recovery partition.
  12. I would also recommend keeping the recovery partition. If you want to delete it, Gateway usually has an option to create a set of recovery and driver cds, make those first. As to reclaiming your space, partition magic 8(I use it regularly) does a great job. Gparted is a good free solution.
  13. We usually charge $90. I figure about $45 for the part and $45 for the labor. With markup on the part, we are making about $70. Considering the time to do it is less then a half hour, it is one of our more profitable jobs. With that said, we have the lowest prices of anyone in our area. We offer free diagnostic and estimates. Most every shop charges a diagnostic fee of $30 - $40(more for laptops) just to look at a computer. In your area, if you call around, you may find it for less money. Just a thought, if you did the diagnosis, brought me the part and just wanted me to install it, I would ju
  14. You could bring it to my shop in Rochester MN, we do free estimates :-) Kidding aside, if it was brought to me, the first thing I would do would be to try a new power supply. You could buy a power supply for about $20. It is an inexpensive and easy thing to do. The supply I listed is cheap, but I have used at least 30 of that brand with great luck(none have been DOA or have come back to the shop).
  15. I agree fully(although I still like to complain). I am not putting down sp3. I was just curious if "automatic update" is able to determine if a computer was impropelry loaded by the manufacturer and not apply the update.
  16. Make sure your automatic update settings are set to "download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them". Then the next time you get a notice of newly downloaded updates via your system tray notification, you can choose "custom install", then uncheck "Service Pack 3"
  17. Today Microsoft started distributing XP SP3 via automatic updates. This article says the update process is smart and will check for know bad configurations and not install it. I wonder if it is able to check for this configuration. Time will tell. Maybe the computer repair business will be booming.
  18. I found this explanation by the author "AnonymousCoward" on another forum. He(she) did a nice job of explaining it.
  19. Rebooting sounds like a blue screen. You can verify this by disabling automatic restart at system faliure. 1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. 2. Click the Advanced tab. 3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box. 4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times. 5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect. AFter doing this, instead of rebooting, your system will display a blue screen. Copy this information and leave it in a post
  20. Even if the law was aimed at forensic computer companies, is it written in a way that affects all repair companies.
  21. I don't get this. Why in the world would they do something so crazy http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2324220,00.asp
  22. My friend has a custom built $10,000 file server which he uses for his media network(mentioned this to show his dedication). This is his full time hobby. He uses SageTV and loves it. I don't think it is open source
  23. I like it it is simple and clean here is what I am using. The color looks really bad online. It is really a nice sky blue.
  24. What did you do to fix the driver problem? Did you reinstall the nforce drivers?
