  1. If you upgraded the computer to 256mb of total ram(I think that is your max), you could have a good experience. You would just have to make sure you are not running any ram hungry programs, if it was me, I would run without AV. If you made sure programs were not auto running, check msconfig, you could keep your total ram usage under the total capacity of physical ram installed.
  2. That was my thought, With my x2 ati video chipset laptop I have never had any problem playing h.264 videos. Any dual core laptop should not have an issue with those.
  3. Thanks for all the help. I will check out those links.
  4. I have not been able to get the computer to blue screen while in my possession. That is why I tried reading the .dmp file. This computer is one I have sold to somebody. I have changed every part on it. I also have reloaded it. I am starting to thing they have an environmental problem at their house.
  5. I am trying to make some sence out of reading a .dmp file. Below is the output I am getting. Any thoughts to what this error means? I am not sure if the .dmp file loaded properly. Does the error below refer to the memory dump or an improperly loaded .dmp file? Microsoft (R) Windows Debugger Version 6.10.0003.233 X86 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. 7. The preferred answer on this board would be "post a log in the hjt forum". If you feel like taking a chance and doing it yourself, I would first run combofix, then after I would run mbam. With those two tools, you have abourt a 90% success rate of getting it removed. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix http://www.besttechie.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=14289 According to the author of combofix, about 1% of computers that run it may be rendered unbootable. While very effective, this tool can cause problems. Use it at your own risk.
  8. You could install VNC, this would work perfect for your situation. http://www.realvnc.com/ You would install the vnc server on her computer, then install the client on your computer. I am not sure Windows Remote Desktop will work. I don't think(am not sure) it will allow both of you to be logged on at the same time.
  9. Since a root kit hides processes from the OS, how would these be shown in logs?
  10. ANY extra knowledge will help. I understand if it is to complicated to get into in a post :-)
  11. My normal routine is to rename both combofix and MBAM before running them. Thanks, I will try that in the future. MBAM is a great program, it is the best all around anti-malware program I have used.
  12. I don't want you guys to clean a machine for me. I was hoping for some general knowledge on how to remove root kits.
  13. I come across root kits quite often lately. I see it most often on machines infected with "antivirus 2009". This root kit will not allow installation of many programs, in particular, MBAM. My only solution to this problem is combofix. To this day, it has not let me down. I hate depending on one program to deal with rootkits. If that ever fails me, I would be lost. Could any of you experts help we with the general method of dealing with rootkits. Any suggestion would be appreciated.
  14. You may right about the drive experiencing total failure.
  15. Since you can open them, have you tried to copy and paste them to a different drive?
  16. I agree. If by chance she has two sticks try one at a time. If she only has one stick, it may work in the other slot. A bad memory slot will give the same symptoms as a bad stick of memory. The memory and slot may be good. Their is a small change reseating it(taking it in and out) may solve the problem. With all that said, with the highest probability, the ram just want bad. As a general rule, in our shop, we test both the hard drive and ram before doing any other diagnosis. Those procedures save us lots of time and head aches.
  17. If the firewall is off and you are able to ping it, it almost seems as the VNC server is not even running. I would try reinstalling the server.
  18. did you try turning the firewall off completely on the pc? This would be a good was to rule the firewall out as a possible issue.
  19. while in sleep mode, the hard drive is completely shut down. It would be safe.
  20. I have a hunch the cd is not working because it has an older service pack. You may be able to slipstream one
  21. the dell latitudes are nice looking laptops. I like the look of the d620. I am not sure, but I think most of the latitude line come with a three year warranty standard. I may be wrong on that, you might want to verify that.
  22. wow, that is unsettling. Thanks for the heads up.
  23. I would order a dell, then pay for the biggest battery upgrade they have. Dell support is very good.
