  1. Don't give up so quickly. I bet it is just something simple you missed. If you care to mess around post your menu.lst file. also what does the following show. ls /boot
  2. are you adding DSL as a second distro? If so choose not to install a boot loader, then just add the entry to you menu.lst of you currently installed distro. edit added later// after reading your other post I realize this will be you only distro. So just let it install lilo to the mbr, this will effectively remove grub
  3. memory upgrades can be a big pain in the a%#. You can get all of the numbers to match the specs and still run into problems.
  4. all this information is really helpful. Thanks.
  5. jeeze you have a good memory :-) I think I used gentoo for a bit before doing LFS. The first time I installed gentoo I have no concept of what a lot of the commands actually meant, like "chroot". When I installed LFS it gave me an understanding of what that command(chroot) actually did.
  6. I have been using gentoo a good for about 2 or so years(since gentoo 1.4). I seem to have found a distro I like. I don't see dropping it any time soon. for a time refernce. I started to use gentoo back when we still had the old tech tv forums. About how long ago did those close?
  7. I would like to buy some memory off ebay. It would be nice to have some on hand for computer jobs. If I buy pc 133 sdram, will this work in systems that use pc 100 or pc 66?
  8. I agree it is not even needed. just make sure your file system support is not built as a module.
  9. have you already installed the package build-essentials also what do these commands show whereis g++ and g++ --version
  10. The old xp firewall did not block outgoing, but the new one with sp2 does.
  11. if I am using xp, I just use the one that comes with service pack 2. It seems decent. If you do not, or can't use the xp one, zone alarm seems pretty good. They also have a free version.
  12. I feel like i stole it from the guy. It is in pristine shape. I am adding 128mb of memory. After the memory upgrade I will have just $185 into it. I get a couple calls a month about used laptops for sale. I am thinking I can easily get $300, maybe even more.
  13. I found it. that seemed much harder then it should have been http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss...hEntry=2651-562
  14. Thanks. I will do that when it arrives. I should have it by thursday
  15. I just bought this 500 mhz thinkpad on ebay. I am having trouble figuring out what model it is. All I can find is "type 2651" http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...Item=6859188704
  16. The gimp seems pretty good. Most of its features are above my head, but so is photoshop.
  17. plus they offer a three year warrenty on all of their boards. I just replaced a dell oem mobo with an asus for just $45. I do not see my self buying any other brand.
  18. I decided to try yahoos. I suppose I can get used to the big color ads.
  19. that was why i was hoping for some personal input from users
  20. I would like to find a nice webbased calender. Do any of you use yahoos calender? Any suggestions to a free one would be appreciated. I have read a little gossip about a google based calender, but nothing real concreate. I think it is just a matter of time before gooogle releases one.
  21. Just curious, did you just use air to clean it?
  22. depending on either configuration, won't you need to edit your boot.ini file to point ot the other os? I would think it would be better to have 98 se in your master postion. edit added later// the following is just a hunch. I can't find anything to back this up. I would probably put 98 on the master postion, then xp on the slave. Afterwords boot an xp cd and run the recovery console, then run the command fixmbr. This may set up you config files to give you the option to choose between OSs. Again this is just a hunch.
  23. Now that I have a working solution, using windows, I can relax. Now I can mess around and get linux and X to work.
