  1. First off let me qualify this post by saying I am over 2000 miles away from New Orleans. And the things that are going on there could happen in any disaster emergency in any of our cities. BUT (you knew that was coming didn't you) I do not understand the seemingly lack of any emergency plan in that state either before or after the hurricane. No coordinated way to move people to higher ground that didn't have their own transportation, no stockpiles of food, water, or other necessities somewhere in state on higher ground, no notification system to call in their state's national guard ahead of ti
  2. Sorry about the original post I did here, have decided it belongs in the rant thread, so deleted it here, and put it in rants. Pat. God bless everyone.
  3. Welcome to the best message boards around. Look over the various sections, then come hang out with us all in Open Chat. Don't worry, we are really pretty normal...well sort of normal...ok I admit once in awhile we aren't quite normal, but we are a lovable happy Besttechie/Mayberry bunch!!! Glad to have you joining the family here Deucehearts!!! Pat. God bless everyone.
  4. They just announced today in our area, which gets it's Alaskan and Canadian gas from a Washington refinery mainly by pipeline, that the gas will be allocated first to company owned stations, then to leased stations according to contract minimums, then to independents if any left over. I predict long lines forming again, and odd/even days you will be able to get gas as happened here in 70's. No rhyme nor reason explanation of why we will be on short supply, other than gas companies have always hated us for not allowing self serve gas in this state. Sigh!!! I have a feeling we will be canceling
  5. Sure is good to hear the gulf coast state members checking back in with us. Has everyone been accounted for now? So much money is needed to help people there. For those who might not think about it, to make your hurricane relief donation dollars go further check with your company to see if they are matching Katrina Relief donations. Just found out when hubby got home tonight that Intel is matching their employee "Katrina Relief" donations to Red Cross (and other relief efforts) plus is donating a million dollars in addition to matching funds. So our check will be matched now. At least with tha
  6. Thanks for the links too, though am watching so much of it on tv, that I seem to just keep on crying for all the people. Just found out when hubby got home tonight that Intel is matching employee "Katrina Relief" donations to Red Cross (and other relief efforts) plus is donating a million dollars in addition to matching funds. So our check will be matched now. At least with that donation, I feel like we did a little something to help people. Pat. God bless everyone.
  7. I also want to add my congratulations to your 1st year anniversary of not smoking. Good job. Now to get the rest of the family to stop too!!! Pat. God bless everyone.
  8. Are they free as in legal free? And most important are they free of adware, malware or worse? Nice if they don't have any problems at all. Thanks for the answers folks. I have always been leery of downloading stuff due to my techknownothow, and to being scared of possible attached bad stuff. Pat. God bless everyone.
  9. I don't know about root pruning the pepper plants, might try it on only one or two to see how they do. I have found they are more persnickety about being disturbed for any reason. Tried to brace them when they were really overloaded one year and they nearly croaked on me. I think it was due to braces disturbing their roots ever so slightly. A couple of things that work with peppers is to put plastic sheeting loosely draped over them. Peppers like tops warm, roots cool. Be sure to lift the plastic the next day when the sun heats things up. That works for tomatoes too. And end of season, you can
  10. I have heard it also depends on how many people are logged in at same time in your neighborhood. The more there are, the less speed you get. In fact our local phone company just ran an ad about that in today's paper. As for me, I'm thinking of getting Dsl with Quest, just haven't figured it all out yet. I am totally fed up with dialup at 28.8 Kbps. Pat. God bless everyone.
  11. That's a great one Marty!!! Pat. God bless everyone.
  12. Happy Birthday, May you be blessed with a long life filled with good health, happiness, and prosperity! Pat. God bless everyone.
  13. So glad to see you back on board, and that you have power restored. I hope your wife is more comfortable now. I can't imagine going through such a terrible disaster, then having to cope with the heat and humidity on top of it all. And saw it was raining in New Orleans today. I hope and pray that all that need help will soon get it. Pat. God bless everyone.
  14. Thanks Liz, I needed a good laugh for the day. The only major accomplishment I did today was to give the tomato plants a 'shave and haircut'. They have needed a good trimming for awhile, but the heavy showers Monday really drooped them down. Did find several unknown ripe tomatoes in the center of the plants, so glad I trimmed them today. That is a good way to force the plant to expend more energy towards ripening fruit before frosty weather. Another method is to take a spade and just use it like a knife straight down around the plant about a foot to a foot and a half (depending on size of
  15. Thanks for the warning info. Just about the time you think the scumbags can't dream up more ways to sucker punch us, they do it anyhow. I remember Leo used to say on original Call For Help, "Never Open Attachments". But if you are going to anyhow, If it looks like it comes from someone you know and you are expecting it from previous email or call, still call them by phone first to verify it. Sounds like good insurance to protect your computer. Pat. God bless everyone.
  16. I heard a report today from Atlanta, that gas went from $2.59 this morning to $3.59 in a few hours....that is gouging!!! Unfortunately I think there will be alot more of it before the gulf coast oil rigs, pipelines, and refineries get back in business. That could be a long time coming back to full operation. Just tracking down and towing back into place, then repairing oil platforms will take weeks. One thing that might shave a few pennies off a gallon IF they pass it on to consumer, is the Feds (EPA) relaxed the air pollution standards on gas quality nationwide from today on, so the refineri
  17. Thanks for the coffee cake bozodog, yummm!!! Checking in here before bed, wanted to tell everyone we're ok. Thunderstorms only hit our NW corner of Oregon, SW corner of Washington, instead of whole state. I hate to admit it because I still hate them, but we've had so many of them this year, that I am almost getting used to them. So in spite of us doing errands around town, and being caught in fierce downpours with the whole shebang of a storm cell sitting on our heads so to speak while in traffic then waiting it out in a parking lot once, we survived it ok.. That one cell was said to have pro
  18. Thank You Marty for your contribution help. Bless you for it. Marty the counts of the dead wont start really mounting until the water recedes, then the mud and debris must be cleared away. That may take a long time. Now the Red Cross and others are just starting with the lists of dead, missing, etc. So many people evacuated too, so getting a good firm count of who is where, and who is truly missing will take awhile. We have had some major disastors in this country, but I don't think there has ever been one here before on such a massive scale as this, unless during the civil war? I don't kn
  19. Welcome to the Besttechie family, Inutashio. Sure glad you're joining us. Warning, since you are eleven, stay away from the comedy club unless your Dad approves first of an individual thread, some of those threads are a bit to adult for kids (and even for some of us adults). As for Mac, he is our resident eccentric. He is only a tiny bit scary, but really he's harmless...I think! Ha! Though do watch out when he is testing one of his many inventions. Ha! So now we are getting some younger kids joing us here, maybe Jeff can put the arcade back on the board??? Please Jeff? I think I am one of
  20. The tv coverage pictures look so devastating for so many many thousands of lives, homes, businesses; and the land under water looks almost like we've lost a good portion of this country. And that is just what the reports have shown so far, how much more destruction there must be that hasn't been covered. I don't know the emoticon for weeping, but here is one for love and prayers to all. (We need a praying hands emoticon too.) OK folks, lets put our wallets where our hearts are. Give as much as you can, and if your place of employment sets up a matching fund for hurricane victims aid, then
  21. Hi everyone, Just thought I'd post this before I go to bed in a few minutes. This is a notification that everything is ok, so you don't have to worry. I was busy today, and then spent some time at G$ trying to help someone, then PM'd a couple of people to do the tech expert stuff, maybe even HJT logs. Didn't want to send kid here, as it took about 20 posts including other people on thread to get enough info from him to pretty much determine my original guess probably right. Figured he'd be the same way here. I hope he gets it solved. I will have the computer unplugged tonight and tomorrow, as
  22. Have you tried a baited yellowjacket trap away from where they are? Or somehow get a tight plastic tarp over the compost barrel when you spray them? That way they would get more of the fumes. Leave plastic on tight if possible, and they might suffocate if spray doesn't get them. But be careful. I hate those things and muddaubers too, and am allergic to bald faced hornets...like I'm going to get close enough to one to see if it is baldfaced. No Way! Be careful. Pat. God bless everyone.
  23. I don't have a picture of it, but it sure needs to be taken over by us, and for Mac's nitreous oxide to do it's good work on them. This is best I can do, instead of a picture logo. G4 Pat. God bless everyone.
  24. You all that are in the path or fringes of this monster hurricane are in my prayers. Keep your feet on solid ground and stay dry!!! Be careful folks. We care about you. When you come back hopefully safe and sound, I would like to know why some people don't evacuate when things look this bad!!! Pat. God bless everyone.
  25. Smart Kids!!! Thanks Barb for posting it. God bless everyone.
