  1. Definitely. Even if you do have to run apache, it's less resource intensive than any fully software firewall I've seen.
  2. If apple announced a dual core 1.5 Freescale powerbook my credit card would be smokin'. But... I guess I'll just have to wait for a Intelabook. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> you guys might be very very pleasantly surprised at the chips intel is making for apple. some of us a while back were trying to figure out which chip base they were going to start with for the new chips. there were a couple that looked like they were meant for an apple based system. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I've never had a problem with 'PC' hardware. Just Windows. This desktop is a 'LinMD' box, Intel is overpriced IMO, b
  3. I've been tinkering with one lately. I use a Windows 2000 box running SageTV and PowerDVD (No DVD burning though). What you need is a video capture card (and I would suggest a hardware encoding card--a Hauppauge PVR-150 or PVR-250 (use the 250 if you would ever be interested in using Linux) would be a good choice), a sound card wth line-out, and a video card with TV-out capability (if your trying to do this on the cheap, I would suggest an XGI Volari V3--there was a sale not long ago where you could pick one up for $15), a TV that can accept composite or S-video output, and maybe an IR blaster
  4. UT2004, RTCW, Quake 3, NWN, and a few others run natively. Many more will work if using Cedega. If gaming is a concern, dual-boot.
  5. Current G5s are actually fairly cool when you clock them down to 1.4ghz or so. Unfortunately, this is no more powerful than the G4s currently shipping, and certainly less powerful than Freescale's latest offerings.
  6. Frankly, I'd rather them use Freescale's MPC8641D ('Dual-core G4') for the Powerbooks.
  7. By the way--you can run OS X on Wintel hardware natively now. Just rent a DTK or grab the OS X/x86 torrent.
  8. Debian can be installed from two floppies and a 'net connection. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> How do you do a 'net connection? Remember now that I am a total newbie here <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It depends. How are you getting a net connection now?
  9. Choice. Not only can I make my GNU/Linux environment dance, I can have it do a specific dance, to a tempo of my specification, wearing the shoes I decide.
  10. Debian can be installed from two floppies and a 'net connection.
  11. It's because Apple leverages the operating system as a reason to pay for their (moderately) overpriced systems. Apple makes tremendous profit off the sale of hardware in this manner. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> But isn't another reason why prices are so high is because of IBM's charges? People are hoping that when the Intel machines come out they'll be cheaper.... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hell no! Apple gets insane pricing on PPC procs. Here's how they do it: Since Apple is essentially the only buyer of desktop PPC procs, they can simply withhold new models until the price is right. They fo
  12. I'll blasphemy and recommend a top-end Athlon XP.
  13. Gas prices have always varied by quite a bit across the nation. Each state has differing regulations regarding what constitutes 'acceptable' fuel. Gas in California will always be more expensive than it is in, say, South Carolina (Averaging around $2.10/gallon). Oddly enough, the price of oil is largely irrelivent when it comes to the cost of gasoline. We long ago hit a production bottleneck, the high prices of gas are due to competition from other countries (China is a big one). We've never really faced any kind of competition where we weren't able to simply ramp up production. Unfortunately
  14. Nextstep was originally written for m68k boxes, and ported to x86 back in 1993. I've got a copy of it, in fact. I'd go so far as to say OS X actually has a longer history on 'wintel' hardware than it does 'Mac' hardware. It's because Apple leverages the operating system as a reason to pay for their (moderately) overpriced systems. Apple makes tremendous profit off the sale of hardware in this manner.
  15. I'm here. Finally, some relief for Macmarauder?
  16. Seems fine, though I haven't run any sort of extensive test.
  17. I use mirrored displays all the time. Very useful for presentations and such--also sort of important for the setup and troubleshooting of HTPCs.
  18. Hi mercurymouse, Welcome to besttechie.net! I recommend that you start your journey into Linux by trying out a Live Linux CD like Knoppix. A Live CD like Knoppix is a version of Linux that runs completely from your CD ROM without the need to install anything on your hard drive. Here's how it works you insert the CD into your CD tray and re-boot your computer. If your computer boots from your cd rom drive you will be running Linux when it starts up. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> A word of warning about Live Linux distros--they're setup how the distro maintainer likes it, and that might not be h
  19. Can't find any info on the mobo, but it should. I like Ubuntu, YMMV. It's not the best choice if you don't have a fully Linux compatible NIC. 'Linux' is a kernel, so I suppose version 2.6. What your looking for is a GNU/Linux distribution. Think of each distribution as a seperate operating system. Most are free, or have a free version (Free as in 'free beer', all of them are free as in 'free speech'). Here. There are more Linux installation howtos than ameobas in the universe, pick one. Google for 'Linux installation howto' One of the things that you'll hopefully find for yourself is confi
  20. How to rename a file in the Finder, using TheLetterK's method: 1) Select file. 2) Tap enter. 3) Type in the new name 4) Tap enter.
  21. in that case ile hold on to this disk thanks marty <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No point. You'll need an x86 version (it's actually a 'fat binary' version, but that's neither here nor there), and you don't have one unless you downloaded it or rented a DTK.
  22. Not unless VMware sneaked a Mac emulator into their products when I wasn't looking. AFAIK PearPC and (maybe) SheepShaver are the only x86 PowerMac emulators available. There are also a few M68k Mac emulators out there. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Sheepshaver doesn't support OS X. OS 8 and OS 9 only.
