  1. 'transition program'? Speaking plainly, what are you wanting to do? Be as specific as possible. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well there is no "IT" person who runs the show so to speak so everyone is responsible for their own stuff. For example backing up you stuff to the server and etc. Now everyone knows how to use Acronis, install programs and etc. Now with Linux you have this RPM stuff and dependency's and crap.....hahahahahaha....I mean I am getting lost just typing this. We have Macs which NO ONE will go near for whatever reasons. So I guess my question is what Linux package is the most "W
  2. Cool. Please post a screenshot when you're up and running. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well, I have it booting on it's own--built from Stage 1, with the Nehemiah optimizations and kernel patches. Xorg, GTK, and Xfce4 are all built. Working on QT and mythtv right now... Still no unichrome or VIA drm drivers yet. Next time I decide to do this, I definitely need to setup distcc...
  3. I don't use it; last version of Redhat I've used for any length of time was Redhat 9.

  6. There is; idiot me forgot to read the title...
  7. My method of choice is a graphical login manager, but YMMV.
  8. Well, decided to install Gentoo after all. Started at like 4 o'clock yesterday... still compiling... But! Everything is being built with this cache-depleted baby of a processor.
  9. How do u OC it? How do u OC it? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Find yourself an NV45 PCI-E Geforce 6800; or an NV40-based AGP 6800. Then, get RivaTuner (use Google, I'm not going to do your footwork) and unlock the pipes and raise the clockspeed. Full instructions can be found easily by searching for "Geforce 6800 Unlock".
  10. The 6800 is about $30 more than a x800 and the x800 beats the socks off of the 6800 in almost every benchmark i've seen 10% better in some test. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Currently, they are the same price; however, the Geforce 6800 can easily be unlocked to perform very close to a 6800GT--much like how the old Radeon 9500 could be unlocked to perform like a Radeon 9700. If you aren't willing to do any work, then your best off with a Geforce 6600GT or Radeon X800 (the X800 performs a bit better, but also costs a bit more). If your willing to do a tiny bit of OCing, the Geforce 6800 is a muc
  11. Hrmm, I wonder if I could use distcc to speed that along? I prefer Debian to slackware; and prefer Ubuntu to Debian for desktop boxes. Anyway, regarding the performance problems... that's probably due to the Nehemiah's insanely small L2 cache (64k). Still, there's enough deidcated hardware on this box to handle video playback, assuming I can get the drivers working. I hadn't really considered trying Gentoo on this box because I didn't want to spend a week compiling...
  12. Sure that's not a Netgear card? I have a Netgear WG511 (not T) and it was auto-detected and works very well...hopefully you have the same outcome. Given your advanced *nix experience, I'm pretty sure you'd get it working anyway. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Sorry, yes it is the netgear. Not sure why I called it a linksys
  13. Overpriced. An unlocked Geforce 6800 would perform better for $30-40 less.
  14. Going to try Ubuntu--hopefully it all works out nicely. EPIA MII 10000, half a gibi of RAM, 120GiB HDD, Linksys wg511T wireless PCMCIA card
  15. Pick a wireless bridge, any wireless bridge. I use a Motorola WE800G, but YMMV.
  16. SageTV and BeyondTV are both comparable to Windows MCE. Haven't yet given MythTV or freevo a shot yet, but am planning to do so tonight.
  17. No. If you consider selecting a package and clicking 'Apply' to be hard, then you should just go back to a paper and pencil. Like very other platform--GNU/Linux is just better than most. I didn't need luck, I needed 5 minutes checking an HCL.
  18. I was quoting another member whom I disagree with, from another thread I didn't want to pollute. Yes, I linked to a contradicting website by intent.
  19. "Visit this site and see how our nation's foundation was built around Christianity and how we are loosing touch with out roots. FORSAKEN ROOTS http://www.wtv-zone.com/Mary/forsakenroots.html" This was posted in the 9/11 rememberence thread, and I didn't feel like polluting it with a silly religious debate. The United States is not founded upon christianity--it's founded upon the concept of religious neutrality. People so often view the words and actions of a time 200 years behind as they would words today. The use of 'God' in these speeches and documents is not the same context as the use of '
  20. "Did I cut it wrong?" The phrase techs and parents fear the most.
  21. Lots of neat stuff. Mouse collection is out of date.
  22. Yes, but you know how Linux projects end up...
