  1. Hello srahusson. Welcome to Besttechie! I will be helping you in cleaning up your computer. Please print out ALL directions given, for use if/when you cannot access this page. You are currently using HijackThis from a temporary directory, this can cause problems. HijackThis creates backups, these are needed in case of any recovery issues. Please create a directory on your C:\ drive called C:\HJT, download and unzip HijackThis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on. A malicious .DLL file is disrupting the LSP chain on your computer. We need to get rid of it. Plea
  2. Thanks handplane! I'll be passing this around! I wonder what this beholds for the future of the Ewido Anti-Malware tool...
  3. It's not. Even though AdAware & Spybot aren't the greatest with a lot of the newer and tougher infections, they are still very good programs; the best free ones anyway. If youre going to retain anything from the article, it should be just a bit of understanding on how the program works. Many more flaws could be found in programs such as... Norton
  4. yapsearch is also affiliated with CoolWebSearch. Stay away from the website and the browser; some more looking into it shows it will also bring dialers and trojans onto your computer. Marty, I'll move this to Malware as requested.
  5. The only thing to ask this person is "And?" <sarcasm> Wow, you just pointed out that malware can make protection tools not work! Never knew that before! </sarcasm> Basically, all it doing is pointing out, in a very technical way, that malware can interfere with your anti-spyware tools. We all knew that already, which is why we use more than one. (and if all else fails, we move to manual removal). bearskin, I'm glad you pointed it out. It shows how people like to over-dramatize things.
  6. Do you have the stop code for the error screens? From what I can tell, the win32k.sys error screen is caused by too high a speed of RAM.

Hey marty. Does your AV program have an email scanning feature? Most do. If it does, make sure it is enabled. Here is an article from Mozilla about malware and Thunderbird. Matt
  8. It will be an option after scanning. Wouldn't hurt. From my experiences, it won't make much of a difference, but you never know, it may work better in safe mode. I'm assuming youre using XP: * Close all open programs. * Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK * The System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab, Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK and Restart your computer when prompted. * The computer restarts in Safe mode. * Perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode. When you are finished with t
  9. Good point. However, I would highly suggest that you don't use msconfig to disable it from the startup list. Use a seperate app. Msconfig was never meant to be used as a startup manager. Using it that way can cause memory leaks and other issues. Microsoft even warns against it...
  10. OK, google produced a lot. Do you have the most recent version of MailWasher? Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling? Also, try the following: Mailwasher>>tools>>options>>untick "dail up to the internet when user checks mail" and Start>> settings>>control panel>>internet options>>connections>> ensure your connection is labelled "default" Matt
  11. Shelliconhiddenwindow belongs to Musicmatch. Try uninstalling the program, redownloading, and reinstalling. As for the MailWasher question, I'm not sure.. but I'll do some googling. Matt
  12. I would suggest you read this guide on setting up and running ewido. There are a few things you need to do when scanning that are slightly different than most scanners. As barb said, it will ask you what to with the files. Ewido will generate a report of what it did during the scan. I'd suggest posting that. Btw, i'm moving this to Spyware/Adware Information. If a HJT log is needed, I'll move it to the HJT section.
  13. Heya Liz! Ok, lets start at the beginning. The order you run those scans doesn't matter really. However, I'd run Ewido before the other tools. Adaware and Spybot were great in their time, but with most 'modern' infections, they don't do too much . Ewido is a very good anti-malware tool. At this point, Ewido may be able to weed out a lot. I would NOT consider system restore. Unfortunately, system restore points can become infected, just like the rest of the system, and it may be a waste of time (this is all assuming malware is infact the issue here). Running Spybot and Adaware won't
  14. Found this while browsing digg. Looks pretty comprehensive, but I'll let the experts decide that Anyhow, check it out: Linux guide for newbies Matt
  15. Cool tip. just be careful when editing that boot.ini
  16. Microsoft has a very good article on common misunderstadings that often fool people into believing their PC is "invincible". Some good points made. Discusses such topics as: 1. "My computer came with an antivirus program installed—I'm safe" 2. "I update my antivirus every day so I must be safe" 3. "I turned my firewall off so that {insert program name} will work but it doesn't matter—there is nothing on my PC that anybody would want anyway" 4. Cookies are spyware 5. Internet Accelerators speed up Internet connections 6. Change to Browser X and you'll be safe Worth a read. http://www.mi
