hmm.. I love Gentoo (really the only linux distro I have stayed with, and the only one I run my servers with). But Linux is a personal choice.. We use BSD in our labs as a Satllite simulator, I also use it for my Firewall. matter of fact there is little not to like about BSD (pick a type) or most Linux distros (I do have a few I don't like to use). Don't know where I am going with this... except to say, the only distrobution I would tell anyone to say clear of is Linspire (due to its user runs as root) but even they created NVU.. If anyone is having problems downloading a CD (you name it, B

ok , Im lost? you were serfing the web and you saw this exe file... then you booted ubuntu and only get a command line? and when you do a ls command you see nothing but a directory tree,, its sound like it booted single user mode for somereason (and not mounting root-- but you should not see directorys..) as stated try gdm (gnome display manager) but also try a demsg command (deamond message aka your kernel error log) and df -k (disk funtions -k will list size of all mounts and as a side effect show what is mounted) other qustions? did you upgrade anything in ubuntu before the last boot? I d

my only windows box is to play games.. its also my MAME arcade, other then that no WINDOWs.. I keep that even more true with the kids.. the seem to like to click on the things that pop up on the internet and kill a wlndows box in days.. Its simple.. my kids have no need to mount a disk (DVDS and music are not mounted in linux) and my kid or wife should never insall a program (its why I am here). the click the Icon that says internet or openOffice. we are starting to use Kmymoney insted of quicken but I did have quicken set up with WINE. as for you other problems.. mounting.. you raise a poin

sorry you are not makign sense... a 1.5 gig full install on one version of linux is not a Full install on another as it has more software... Full istall means to install all software the author included. This could be 5 word processers, 6 movie players, 3 web browsers, 4 spread sheets, 9 drawing programs. why not just pick what you want and just install that.. its as simple as check and not check..

topic sounds easy right.. I thought so.. ok to keep everyone up to date.. a few months ago I bought a g4 dual 400 (I know , but I can mix 24 tracks in garageband from my MOTU2408. with zero problems) but being mhz envy I bout a dual 1.8 gig upgrade card.. now the problem.. I have OS 10.4 and only OS 10.4, As I saw no need for 9 and blew it away the day the box arrived from E-bay. I am running firmware 1.8f something.. and need 1.9 or above to install the firmware patch to let the system see the new processers. well you can't upgrade the firmware in OSX it must boot from a local 9.1 or bette

root has special abilities in the Kernel, another thing if you vi a read only file root can wq! and it will still write to it. This is why they created a Wheel group for somedistros so that not everone can even try to become root. Bastille Linux add-ons remove the special root abilities from the kernel.

Slowdown When Loading 300+ Folders In A Single Dir
iccaros replied to DOSError's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
its problay indexning the folder if you have the turned on.. Let it do it the first time and it should not have to do it agian. if you don't have folder indexing turned on turn it on. a lot of people turn this off as they think it will increse performance.. but once indexed your files should not change that much to happer performance.. -
No it won't. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> ah.. yes.. well it used to be.. the ATA standard is to split the channel to talk to both devices at the same speed. and as is the case with 802.11 will only talk at the slowest speed. it has to do with timing and message quing. With the invention of PMO the system could talk using independent device timing, adn now DMA the Drive does not have to talk at all to the CPU to write to memory. but you are limited at to what you can do .. IE if you have a PMO 2 DVD and a PMO 4 IDE drive for instances, most BIOS's do slow it to the slowest protocal. This was

to add. a crossover cable (outside color does not mean a thing) wires 1 and 3 are swaped and s are wires 2 and 6. you hold the ends next to each other and you can see. see this page http://www.bluemax.net/techtips/networking...destandards.htm also you need to give each system an address. Windows will give your system a address but its better if you assine one to it. try some thing in the 192.168.1.x range.. where x is the number of each pc..

could they just then add this to their windows ask manager and or their cron job.. This could also be used for getting updates or even new .iso updates from say Linuxiso.org if they wanted... maybe a interface that lets the person choose from a list of torrents and have it always check for an upgrade by writing the config for the person once the torrents are picked?? just a thought.. have you looked into http://www.wxpython.org/ to make it gui for windows and Linux Mac systems? -
no that is for Apple.. The one I listed before is a Upgrade to the one you had..

as it was not beeping before any memory was tested it is most likely not a video card problem unless its PCI. AGP video cards errors cause a BIOS beep. the no fans turning on is a indication of a Power Problem memory or a HD cable coming loose. but the only way to test for sure is to put that card in another system or a cheep card in.. also if this is a upgraded card, it could be you have a power problem that caused a BIOS reset. I had a issue with that card that the bios would try agp 2x and the card showed no video. I reset the bios jumper on the Mother Board and the BIOS redetected the c

programs like etherreal, TCPDUMP, snoop will show you packets but it you don't kow the programs the packetes will tell you nothing. I suggest a good outside firewall, not just a router. Software like MONOWALL came with network use graphs and logging of packets, again if you don't know what to look for it will not matter what tools you have. if you really believe you are being used as a remote server, unplug, for a day, read into locking down Windows (assumptions), using programs like tripwire, or turn off unused ports. Add a password to your account. if its XP use the built in firewall.

I had to put the bootloader into the MBR on the primary drive (master), with the XP load. Ubuntu is on another channel. (no slaves in my setup) Everything I see tells me XP MUST be on the first IDE drive. What is strange is how the RAID card remaps the drive during setup, and then boots from the XP drive designated IDE5. That question is going to grate on me until I figure it out, hopefully I will have time to work on it this week. BH <{POST_SNAPBACK}> xp must be on the primary partition not the primary drive. you can have 4 primary partitions on a single drive. this page may se

how confident are you with the command line? take a look or post your ~/.xinitrc file... This stores wich DM to start.. if you have two listed remove the first one.
