  1. EFWIS has a great answer.. just wanted to expand.. first all Linux distribution since Red Hat 5.0 have had IP tables. IP tables will and can do everything Zone alarm did for you (IT still better to have a "REAL" firewall between all your systems and the internet). But most of the things you used ZA for in wondows does not matter in Linux.. no SPyware, no viruses. I use iptables to keep people from tring things like rlogin or telent even if they are turned off. adn I use clamAV for virus protection (or more like check to make sure a windows user did not give me a file with a virus, and have me
  2. first, if you have a mouse pluged in the touch pad goes inactive according to HP, when using other then MS on this laptop. second sites that may help http://infohost.nmt.edu/~holstien/hppavilion3250.html always the first site for laptops: http://www.linux-on-laptops.com (which leads you to above) from the Linux incompatability list I got this on your network card. (looks like your best hope for a workign driver is from http://www.ralinktech.com with this as the link to the drivers.. http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm but you need to know the ./configure make make install dance.. you could a
  3. VIA has its own kernel modules that will make it run better then stock ubuntu. I would search via's site for linux stuff. also you must remember that the EPIA 1 gig is as fast as a 700mhz celeron ( I hava a few of them) I'm using them as Files servers and firewall's. They work well for this.. they also work well as thin clients.. see http://thinstation.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/ThIndex they are barly passable as a internet box(running XP or KDE/GNOME).. I have a PIII 500 that seams to be twice as fast with video and audio.. I would stick to a light weight X manager like fluxbox. I ha

I could always use it to test my java programs DVR sounds fun... but i only have a 80 + 40gb HD i can't afford anything more. Im lucky i have what i do. firewall... uhh ya, like i could do that. i have no idea how the internet works, i just use it. I really do wanna learn, it would be cool to just happen to go into a friends computer and take controll of their mouse or keyboard. But like thats ever gonna happpen.... webserver... well proxy maybe, for my friends to bypass school filter. anyone have any more projects? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> firewall, look at the devil linux pages ht
  5. well, the first program ran is the boot loader.. the person does not need a script.. Grub and LILO can pass init levels to the systems. on Gentoo you can do this with RC http://gentoo-wiki.com/Rc. I have mine with 4 choices.. boot with X11 normal ethernet, boot no ethernet with GUI, boot wireless with GUI, boot no GUI no ethernet (command line) these all become options in side of GRUB.. here is a good PDF on protecting your linux system from access in single user mode (no user should ever..ever..ever be given single user mode access. ) http://www.elxlinux.com/images/PDFS/grub_thesis-3.pdf a
  6. CVS is the concurrent versions system.. This is where software developers keep the newest code. the system allows programmers to check in changes to the program and have it update so everyone will work with the newest version.. point2play is a GUI installer for games under codega.. I would recommend buying it .. its cheep, compared to buying a new copy of windows.. and you help support the people who put there time in and take the effort to do the work Gaming studios refuse to do. here is a link for direct X 9 support for Wine.. http://directxwine.sourceforge.net/ with codega, the developers d

if faster is not enough.. you really need a project to keep learning.. build a DVR or a web server. create a firewall, learn to build a live CD with all the tools. Then do the saem with windows and see the diffrence.. DVR - need capture card. nothing else to payfor.. With windows you can have a really poor DVR with just hte software with the card.. but to get a decent one you need microsoft media center... which is $150 at OEM cost plus only runs on spacific hardware.. Firewall.. nevermind tring it on windows.. Windows has no kernel level routing or filtering so its will do a poor job. Webserv
  8. it depends .. echo back form a command line, echo back from a Xwindow app or Display manager? for the shell I do not believe you can on a local connection (there are ways on a remote connection I believe) the passwd program (whos funtions are used for password stuff) was written to not echo anything. you may change the source code as it is open.. but other then that .. I don't know a way.. if its for changing passwords you can write a script..
  9. "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -P "MyProfile"
  10. when you go to add printer and pick hp 710c it should just work, that is a parallel printer correct? so no real special drivers.. it should use the standard hp lp driver built in to Windows. and who ever did the Rent to own is required by the OEM agreement to include a "way to restore or install windows". so they must give you a disk if you need it.. but I do not think you do.. but in case here it is.. you have to create an account with them to download it.. it free. but a pain..
  11. oh.. well never mind.. no emerge, no configure make make install...
  12. I also found this, which will help me .. http://weblogs.asp.net/pleloup/archive/2004/01/15/58918.aspx its a windows made iso mounter. so you can create virtual cdrom drives
  13. well I gave deepburner a try. it would have worked but I do not a cdrom at all on this computer. so when I go to burn cd (so I can get to save .iso image) it locks up. This is a simple bug I'll write tem and they should be able to fix in the future.. it should not seach for a CD writer untill you actualy tell it to write a cd. thanks for the input.
  14. sounds like it is not echo'ing.. and you may not be entering a password orver 6 char, and the same one twice I need to download ubuntu and test it as, more and more questions are being based on it.
  15. first it should be a text doc not a propritary word doc as only microsoft word can make those. to test it in linux type cat /media/floppy0/nameoffile see what you get should be the text.. i fso just attach the file to your post.. no need in opening them. as for command not found .. ether mistype or you may need to be root here is what I think you are missing.. in windows the first user is the administrator.. this 100% wrong on and secuerity model. that means any spyware, ,any virus or any bad thing you do can kill your entire system in Linux (UNIX) you have root.. root is the admin.. but you

    It Froze!

to add.. you do not have to wait for yoru batt to die.. just pull that out..
  17. root would be the owner.. as its a system file.. your kernel sources need to be installed. there should eb a package in apt called sources. im going to guess sudo apt-get install linux-headers-2.6-386 should do it. hope that was fast enough
  18. sorry I need to clear this up. I need to create ISO files..not burn them. I'll check deepburner
  19. sure..you mean will one be able to pick up the others download (restart)
  20. Maybe something like this one? ISO Recorder Powertoy for XP <{POST_SNAPBACK}> thanks but I looked at that.. but this is a problem.. "Breaking" News: As many have by now undoubtedly noticed, ISO Recorder does not work on the Windows XP SP2 (any build up to and including RC1). Unlike some software vendors (y'all know who you are), who simply says that their software is not supported on the pre-release operating systems, I acknowledge the problem. In fact, the first version of ISO Recorded has been created for a beta build of Windows XP. I havent tested it.. but its says it shoudl not w
  21. ok, I know I can do this with nero and other burning apps, but I need to do this with out a bought app if I can.. i have files in a folder I need to add to a iso file. I'm a Linux guy so Im used to just mkisofs -r -o my_iso_image mydirectory thanks

  23. ok from the ndiswrapper site I see this Card: Linksys #[WMP11 v2.7] 802.11b -- [link here|List#WMP11 v27] * Chipset: Broadcom BCM4301 * Driver: Downloaded Windows 2000 driver from Compaq site. FilenameSP28538.exe. * Other: Mandrake 10.1 with 2.6.8.1 kernel. NdisWrapper 0.90 built and installed. Use bcmwl5.inf. this is how they made this card work.. so it may be a driver issue compatable with ndiswrapper. Wireless Network: Broadcom Corporation BCM4301 802.11b Broadcom dont seem to have drivers for the wireless cards, so I used ndiswrapper from httphttp://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net
  24. Odd, I dont need to load a floppy driver in Ubuntu5.04 in vmware. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It may not.. I don't have it here it see. adn VM doesnet run on Solaris yet.. so I'll take your word...
