If you want a live Linux CD I think the one you're using ,Knoppix, is just fine. If you want to install a distro to your hard drive I'd go with Mandrake 10.1 or Fedora Core 3 for a first Linux install; they're both excellent in identifying your hardware and are easy to set-up. I'm happy to hear you're sticking with Linux. Eventually you'll perhaps want to make the leap and install it to your HD. Both Mandrake 10.1 and Fedora Core 3 are very XP-like in functionality, with the ability to right click your mouse etc. KDE and Gnome, the windows managers for these main distros are very windows-like

Yet another reason why I'm happy I'm not a windows user. Linux rules. Thanks for the link, iccaros. It's frightening to think of all of those unpatched windows virus machines out there.

Here's a screenshot of my Fedora Core 3 box running Gnome 2.8.0, kernel 2.6.10, Fire Fox 1.0.1

On my Fedora Core 3 box I'm mostly using Gnome 2.8.0 and sometimes XFce. XFce is very fast, hardly uses any RAM at all.

I haven't used the Evolution e-mail client for some time since I had Red Hat 9. The newest version of Evolution 2.02 put out by Novell is very good. I'm using that on my Fedora Core 3 box.

I'll give it a try in the next little while and down load it, iccaros. I have a huge project at work that has me swamped for the next two weeks so I won't be on-line as much as usual. Thanks for getting your web server on-line.

That looks very interesting shanenin, thanks for the link Welcome to Besttechie.net; I was hoping you'd log-on one day. BTW, shanenin is a Linux expert from the old tech tv forum days. I've used Free BSD before, but, shanenin is very proficient in slackware and gentoo, both are advanced distros. It's great to see you, man.

LOL, I say the same thing to my co-workers too, mostly I get met with glassy eyed stares. As I stated I recently improved the performance of this PC. Last week it was running Win 98SE. However, it was starting to get flakey. I had installed a copy of M$ Office XP on it and also a new printer driver as well. As soon as I did that the unit became unstable, locking up, blue screens.......oh joy. Also, my hard drive was clicking like crazy all the time. So I installed Fedora Core 3. Fedora found my new printer, my hardware. Now the computer runs quietly, happily. Linux rules.

Well I just installed Fedora Core 3 on a troublesome windows PC at home a week ago. iccaros is right:-) The best way to make a computer run trouble free is to remove windows from it. I downloaded the ISOs from Red Hat and like the distro very much. I ran Red Hat 9 for a year ; this is an excellent replacement for that distro. If you liked Red Hat 9 you'll really like Fedora Core 3. No glitches to speak of. I installed FC3 on an old IBM Plll 667 MHz 300 PL PC with 256 MB RAM. It runs well on this old unit with RAM to spare. Fedora found all of my hardware, set-up was a snap. The anaco

Hi Folks, The good people at Mozilla have released a point upgrade for Fire Fox. This is a security update and a bug fix. Fire Fox 1.0.1 is available now for download. I just updated all of my boxes. Download here.

I don't use IE at all like you, tictoc5150. For me IE is just too dangerous to use, it is designed by default to run active x code which can potentially mess up your computer. SP2 does a decent job of patching IE, but, it still picks up a load of spyware. I don't use windows products. But, I have one XP Pro box at home that belongs to my daughter. My daughter only uses Fire Fox 1.0 on her windows box and the unit is quite stable. If IE 7 is as good as the writer of the article insists it will mean that Fire Fox will only get better to stay ahead of the curve. I'll bet the next generation

Congratulations on joining the Linux club. It is very addictive. After you've messed around with Knoppix for a while you might want to install Linux to one of your windows boxes. Good first choices are Mandrake, Fedora, SuSe. For me personally I don't have a problem with formatting a windows box. The best way to get a computer to run properly is to remove the windows infection from it and install Linux:-) I am a little biased of course. I've made the switch completely. I don't use windows.

Cool, glad you're up and running. Was it F10 that did it?

Hi, If you want to use a live CD I'd go with Knoppix it has excellent hard ware detection. You can download Knoppix here. Make sure you download the English version Knoppix is very easy to use. Just pop the CD into your windows machine. If your BIOS is set so that your CD ROM drive is the first bootable device then you're all set. If your computer doesn't boot from your CD ROM drive you'll need to go into your BIOS settings and set the CD ROM drive as first bootable device. Power down your computer. Turn on computer. Your computer will boot from the live CD and then Knoppix will auto det

Different computers have different ways to get into the BIOS settings. Some computers you can hit delete on start-up. I did a quick and dirty search on Google and found one compaq aramada that used F10 to get into the BIOS settings. If that doesn't work try searching the manufacturers web site. Here's a that might help you.Compaq BIOS help
