You are very far from stupid, macmarauder. Yes, I've also noticed a casual disregard for safety on the road. Perhaps life has sped up so much that people don't have the luxury of slowing down.

I totally agree, I don't like bloat in any OS and thought it was pretty cool that you pretty much build gentoo from the ground up, with as little or as much as you want it to have. I might try setting up a gentoo system for regular use someday but this one was just for the experience of installing it and seeing what kind of a mess I could make...guess I'm not too bad, second time's a charm...yeah, there are a couple hardware related errors before getting to X but it's usble once I get there...lol daunting ain't the word for it...lol...more like aneurysm-provoking. but yeah, totally worth the

Thank you, macmarauder. I'm addicted to *nix, so I thought the title was silly and fun

I'm in the same position as jcl; I've never used a modem under Linux, always used broadband. Broadband is a lot easier to set-up in Linux. Good luck with that.

hitest, most of what you said is an acurate assesment, Ubuntu seems like a solid choice for starting linux and hardware research is always a good plan...but...Ubuntu is a text based install, not gui...very simple, none the less...and also since Ubuntu defaults to gnome (a very fast and stable gnome 2.8) for its WM, there's that difference too Yep, you're right! I don't know why I got ubuntu confused with fedora. The install will be more of a challenge. Now I remember why I got it confused with fedora. If it's based on debian it'll have the apt package updating system which is similar in fu

Hi Codemuffin, Cool. I've been windows free for a little while. I've got two Linux boxes at home (Slackware 10, Mandrake 10.1) and my daughter has an XP Pro box. I'm able to do everything that I want to do using Linux so like you I don't feel the need to run windows. I'm really interested in open source software, I love this stuff. Hi MistaMatt90, I'll help you in any way I can. You've made a very good choice for a first Linux install. As I understand it Ubuntu is a red hat clone which means it'll use the Anaconda installer which is a very intuitive GUI that'll guide you through the in

Congratulations!!! I quit 7 yrs ago, never felt better. Will never smoke again. Oh ya, I'll have a cup to go. Barb Great idea for a thread, macmaruader! I'll have a cup of java, extra rich, thank you:-) I quit smoking 22 years ago, I was able to quit because my girl friend at the time (now my wife) bet me that I wasn't strong enough to quit. That encouraged me to kick the habit.

Very cool. You're not a newbie if you're posting with Gentoo Nicely done. I've also given Gentoo a few tries, I had it networked and somewhat useable, but not really. You got further along than me. I'm sticking with Slackware for the time being; it runs well on my Plll 667. I may also attempt Gentoo again at some point, I'm going to learn how to properly use Slackware.
