Ubuntu has a text based installer which is very easy to use. Ubuntu also has very good hardware detection. Ubuntu is released every 6 months, the next version is coming out in October. Software updates are a snap with Ubuntu as it ships with apt-get and Synaptic. Ubuntu would be a good first choice; I'm happy with my Ubuntu box.

You're welcome.

That's what holds me back on installing Gentoo, I've got older hardware and I'd be looking at days of compiling time. Sounds like you'e just about there

Cool. Please post a screenshot when you're up and running. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well, I have it booting on it's own--built from Stage 1, with the Nehemiah optimizations and kernel patches. Xorg, GTK, and Xfce4 are all built. Working on QT and mythtv right now... Still no unichrome or VIA drm drivers yet. Next time I decide to do this, I definitely need to setup distcc... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Cool. I've got a good understanding of Slack, but, not Gentoo. I'm also running XFce on my Slackware 10.2 box; I installed 10.2 last night. Sounds like you've just about got it beat:-)

Agreed. I unfortunately have a sarcastic view of anyone willing to enter public life. Politicians will say anything to get elected and keep their job. NZ sounds just like my neck of the woods too, martymas.

I ran FC4 for a time. It's a good distro. When you get to the log-in prompt screen just choose your session type, there you can switch to what ever DE you want (KDE, Gnome, etc.)
