  1. I like Vista. I ALWAYS thought the Vista hatred was PATHETIC (sorry 'bout the bluntness if you hate Vista). Everything I heard was the same ol' same ol' complaints about upgrading, "Wah, I gotta get new drivers! Wah, such-and-such a program won't run any more!", blown to RIDICULOUS proportions. For me, the "Please Microsoft, can I PLEASE use this OS I paid for?" issue, which is the main reason I never upgraded from 98SE, was a non-issue. It was automatic and, if it even occured at all, I didn't notice it (of course, I don't have Genuine Advantage enabled ... yet ... so we'll see). The 64-bit i
  2. Kind of a blog post, but ... So, I hook everything up and it runs fine: Dell Inspiron 530, Vista Home Premium 64bit (see below), Intel Core2Duo 2.80 Ghz, 6GB RAM, 750 GB drive, 22inch monitor (my old one was OK, but wasn't widescreen and what-the-hey, package deal and all ...), an all-in-one printer (my old printer was OK, but I was concerned about compatibility AND I was happy to get rid of HP because of the ridiculous cost of consumables, plus my scanner may or may not have worked with 64bit, etc., so I just got something I knew would work, plus that packaged deal and all ...). I actually
  3. That really stood out for me: Authority; Singular.
  4. What can I say but ... AWWWW!
  5. Another "spectacular" (or is it "crap-tacular?") power outtage: Ten Hours. Severe storms (w/more to come), power went out after I went to bed and was still out when I awoke. When it FINALLY came back on I reset everything -- but the computer, which wouldn't start (see PC Help Forum for questions concerning what I wound up doing there).
  6. After an apparent lightning strike somewhere nearby, my oldie-but-goodie computer (10+ years old, Win98SE) apparently blew out the power supply. I can't find a replacement PS in any nearby brick-and-mortar stores (new ones are SIGNIFICANTLY larger) so ... I'm using this as an excuse to join the 21st Century and I bought a new computer (w/Vista). I hooked everything up, Vista ran the updates, I rebooted and everything's running (and I'm online). What settings, if any, should I immediately change?
  7. Interesting experience, though, just so's ya know, I have ZERO interest in the i-Phone itself ... just sayin'. I do, however, appreciate these heads-up posts for blog entries I might have missed or that are of particular interest to the audience on the boards.
  8. A few quotes from an article by David Limbaugh: In other words: Business as usual.
  9. Strong storms last night. The power went out momentarily (at least) twice (that I know of). EVEN STRONGER storms went through a few minutes ago: Raindrops hitting the windows had ice cores, the wind was blowing in several directions at once (circular motion?), the local tornado sirens went off (it's not Tuesday, 10:30 am, is it?). Even with all that the worst of it must have missed us as reports stated this storm had 60-80 mph wind gusts and large hail. Whew! (But more severe storms are on the way ... all day today, AND all day tomorrow).
  10. Unless they enact some sort of nationwide edict to build the necessary infrastructure, hydrogen powered cars aren't going to happen in my lifetime. And ... There's a reason no one has had much success selling "micro" cars here, even though they sell them in OTHER markets. But keep workin' on it, even if they succeed in making "grass-ohol" economically (which uses non-crop biomatter to make biofuels), that looks like a temporary stop-gap measure to me, I bet fuel cells are the future.
  11. It sounds like "business as usual" to me.
  12. That reminds me of one of my first "Nature" lessons: Off the beaten track in Lincoln Park (in Chicago) there was a large (and beautiful) tree. Whenever we'd get anywhere near that tree, we'd be attacked by a bird. We always liked finding these out-of-the-way places to enjoy, but we had to abandon that one. We were pretty young, and this was long before most "Nature" shows on TV, and I think we knew INSTINCTIVELY why that bird was so aggresive.
  13. Oh yeah, mot-ser-ella and "English" ANYTHING is way too sophisticated for White Trash cooking. Way. What's next? Some of that fancy French mustard in a jar?
  14. Well ... Now that you've decided NOT to do it ... How do you know your laptop couldn't be working BETTER than it is right now? Faster? Or with new features available? What happens if you DO run into a problem: Will you waste time trying to figure out what's causing it and trying to fix it when it COULD have been avoided entirely if you had already updated your BIOS? Just sayin' ...
  15. Owning your own business ain't all it's cracked up to be!
  16. Oh yeah, they NEEDED a second volume! And I would NOT recommend getting your MIL ANYTHING with "White Trash" in the title.
  17. Guess I should'a added: IF you're a good typist or know one who'll help. I learned on an electronic keyboard designed to teach touch typing (one of V-Tech's earliest products) and tested, rather quickly, at 80+ WPM. I manually copied a sixteen lesson course (with homework assignments) in -- relatively -- little time. There are programs that teach touch typing (a web search would turn up dozens of examples). You'd be surprised at how quickly you'll "get" it. With OCR you wind up spending so much time manipulating and retyping the mis-translated text (move the cursor to the text that's been tr
  18. Great pics! I forgot to include having seen Cardinals, they're our state bird so it goes without saying they're around so ... I didn't say. I found broken Robin's eggs like, ALL OVER my yard, front and back. SOMETHING's been eating them up I suspect (since there's no place for nests on my property). Do squirrels eat bird eggs? Racoons certainly would, but I haven't seen any signs of racoons for a long time (which is weird). Thank goodness the skunks have stayed down by the stream and away from my lawn ... so far (last year they tore the HELL outta lawns around here, lookin' for grubs)
  19. Frankly, in my experience it'd be easier, quicker and far less frustrating to retype the documents using a word processor.
  20. Another possible reason to "pick" at the screen: Looking for nesting material. I haven't gotten around to replacing the kitchen screens yet so they're still fiberglass. One of the "flaws" the bird was picking at had a few fibers poking out (though it then picked at a small clump of, whatever, which is what led me to believe it may have thought flaws could be bugs -- and I think it's a bit late in the season to be building nests). I didn't know Goldfinches were considered "pests." But ... They're so pretty! I don't remember EVER seeing a hummingbird in the wild, that'd be cool. We are overrun
  21. ... mmm ... fried cornbread ... [drool]
  22. Pete, I saw those storm on the radar, they looked nasty. They passed South of my particular location but hit downstate, apparently undiminished (six to eight inches of rain). I did get a power "hiccup" that didn't even trigger a glitch in my most sensitive equipment (which would be the digital alarm clock I built back when I was in High School -- I didn't know how to 'condition' the incoming power back then, and, apparently, I didn't know enough about battery backups as those circuits never did work). How did you "know" the problem with the truck was water in the tank? You make it sound like
  23. All things considered, she got a fair price for it.
  24. I really REALLY like your idea of using Bing, exclusively, for a week. Microsoft (or some other interested party) should promote that kind of challenge for everyone. The only part of the review I could comment on would be their indexing speed. In another review (don’t remember where) they praised Bing’s speed. In one direct comparison (which you couldn’t perform per your challenge rules) Bing updated SECONDS after a change was made while Google did not update the change at all during the testing period. You also brought up a few features I didn’t find on my own, thanks. It may be so feature-ri
