  1. Recently activated this for a private site. Quite easy.

    I wanted to share subscribers across the site, but didn't want to manually go through 200+ users. So I installed the Multisite User Management plugin and it took care of this for me.

    Falcon:

    This sounds cool. I just had a problem with the fact that I went to about 10 sites looking for information about this, found the configuaration steps, then after doing them, the Superadmin panel was "missing." The allowMultisite=true piece was MISSING from the instructions I used, so I found that in a Wordpres blog, added it to the site I was setting up, then added it here - I don't want to have to search like that again heheeheh :) Oh well, such is LIFE hehehe

    I wish that these instructions were already there to start with, as Wordpres 3.0.x can do Multisites without using Wordpress MU - You just have to update Wordpress from version 2.8.x to 3.0.x and thats easy, then you can add the configs - Just make sure to backup copies of wp-config.php and .htaccess (if .htaccess exixts) and use Metapad and NOT notepad or wordpad if using windows, or yeeeeeeeach, what a MESS :(

    Glad its working well for you!!

  2. thanks guys! I didnt have any external hardwares attached. though right now, things seem fine, i will have to observe if i really got the problem fixed (doing nothing!) i still need to know what really happened though just in case it occurs again..

    I would also check your error logs to see if there is anything the matter with your hardware: Such as a HardDisk - There could be a problem with your hardware, and the error logs should help you wind out.

    Good Luck!!

  3. Disconnect all external devices (especially usb drives and cameras) . Just keep the keyboard, mouse, monitor connected. See if that helps.

    I have to remember that myself, as with my laptop it won't boot into windows with a external drive or a USB Stick inserted, but there is no problem in my setup with a USB mouse - Good Luck!!

  4. Hi Liz:

    It is always a good Idea to try to reinstall Firefox by downloading it again IF something gets borked - I had to do that a couple times myself to fix a couple problems, especially if the installer won't allow you to uninstall because something is no longer there - Good to fix it enough to make sure you get it all uninstalled - Only problem I've had is when you are on a slow machine and you are trying to fix the uninstaller by installing it again - sometimes it can be slow - Good Luck!!

    Brian

    Yea, slow machines can be a pain. I just bought this new one, so slowness in the machine isn't the problem (tho my internet connection is).

    Oh, That reminds me, I should check my website to make sure I have the latest version for download :) How fast is your connection???

  6. I have been playing around with Wordpress 3.01 and have found it to be robust and pretty slick. Yesterday I was asked to enable multiple Websites using Wordpress. If you are using anything Prior to wordpress 2.8, you can use Wordpress MU (Multiuser). However, in Wordpress 3.0.x this functionality is built right in. Problem is that when you follow the instructions About Creating a Wordpress Network They tell you to first do:

    The menu item to set up the network is hidden by default, so we have to allow it to be shown. Open up

    your wp-config file right on the server, or download it, edit it and re-upload. You'll be adding this line:

    define('WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true);

    Put this line somewhere in the middle of the wp-config.php file, not at the top or bottom. At the bottom

    is under the /* That's all stop editing */ area and anything new under there will not be read by

    WordPress.

    If you are copy-pasting from Windows, please make sure the quotes do not turn into curly quotes like

    “. You want these ones: ' Otherwise, the line will not be read and you won't see the Network menu

    item. This define statement's sole purpose is to show us the menu item. That's it.

    Save the wp-config.php file, go to the admin area of WordPress and you'll see the Network menu item

    under Tools. Click It

    However, if you follow the directions EXACTLY as they are written, when you follow them, create the .htaccess file, and make edits to wp-config.php Then Click Login on the Network setup, you are supposed to see a "SuperAdmin Panel" - You will NOT SEE this panel, unless you follow these instructions:

    I finally found the shXt problem caused the super admin no show, it is because the steps first ask you to add a line :

    define('WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true);

    and then after you enable the network, it ask you to add some more lines:

    and the first one is:

    define( 'MULTISITE', true );

    They looks very alike and I thought I have already add that one, and pass that line.

    Suggest move

    define( 'MULTISITE', true );

    to second line

    So, to make this work, do this:

    define('WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true);
    define( 'MULTISITE', true );

    ADD these two lines THEN follow the rest of the instrructions the way thay are written, and you will see the Superadmin Panel - This information was MISSING from the instructions from the first link, and I followed the instructions exactly with bad results -added the define( 'MULTISITE', true ); to the secind line, edited the files as instructed, added the keys they wanted, and BOOM - all done!!

    [NOTE: Please Note that you should NOT use Wordpad, Notepad or a Word Processor to edit these files. You can use Nano/Pico or Metapad] This is especially important if working on windows machines, because editing these with anything other then Metapad can muck them up and make them unusable.

    I post this here for anyone else that may need it - something tells me I will need it later!!

  7. Well I am compeltely stumped with my laptop. It all started about two weeks ago when I couldn't connect to my school email address. I noticed it required a secure connection and I then realized I couldn't access any https sites. I took it to the tech support at my school and they told me to re install Windows, and I can't afford to do that. Its a Toshiba running Windows 7 HP 64bit. I used to be able to connect just fine, and it just randomly stopped connecting one day. I can connect fine from other computers, just not mine. Any help is really appreciated.

    Hey Monsterenergy - whats up??

    I shudder to say this, but has this laptop been attcked by Malware or a virus or something that would have possibly stopped https:// connections? Malware can be tricky as heck sometimes, and we BOTH know that strange things can happen. It is entirely possible that something may have gotten in there and changed something without your knowledge.

    I would scan this thing using the tools in your toolbox and see if anything is detected - perhaps something is hiding and you do not know it........Perhaps a second set of eyes on BT's Malware Removal Team can see something you don't.

    Good Luck!!

  8. The IRS will NOT be satisfied unless you Pay UP - They will find ways to take whatever they think you have to satisfy a debt - Making a "deal" is another way, but I have yet to see a legit "deal" that allows you to be able to continue to do what you do, and still be able to live in your home/keep your property.

    Best advice: Pay your taxes, and that should (hopefully) get them off your back - but we all know how sneaky they can be, and if you don't pay, they will find out heheeh

    Brian

    There are three ways to please the IRS.

    Pay up.

    Make a deal directly with them.

    Die.

  9. Hello There:

    Sounds like you want it to cycle, and do a slideshow of pictures. I use 2 programs that may be of help. One is Webstudio, the Other is Dreamweaver. Although you can probably do a slideshow by doing hardcoding, webstudio can do this as well. I have not really used Dreamweaver that much, but it sounds like a slideshow is what you need.

    Good Luck!!

  10. This is EXACTLY why I do not believe in most of these dumb commercials on TV - They promise to lower your payments, stop the interest payments, and other things that seem like a win-win for the customers. They (FTC/FBI) need to take these frauds down, as there seems to be an increase in these types of commercials, and it seems to be an epidemic in the ecoonomy - meaning that, because of the bad economy, people may be drawn to these types of services.

    I have seen this type of commercial on tv for awhile, and I honestly belive that, based on investigations done by the authorities show that 99% of these setups are frauds - There seem to be legit companies out there that want to take advantage of peoples' bad situations, and this to me is not right, as is evidenced by this article. As more of these "companies" advertise on TV, it becomes harder to determine which are legit, and which are scams - I feel that the FTC has to do more to deal with these "fly by night" operaions - They obviously know that there are many of them out there, and they have to be able to catch them, but what you have so many people that can be "taken" by these companies, action should be swift.

  11. Hello Everyone:

    I have been fooling with vnc4server, and I have been hit with a problem: If you look at the xstartup file for my sessions, it will say:

    #!/bin/sh

    # Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop:
    # unset SESSION_MANAGER
    # exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

    [ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
    [ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
    xsetroot -solid grey
    vncconfig -iconic &
    x-terminal-emulator -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
    x-window-manager &

    Of course, it tells ya to UNCOMMENT

    # Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop:
    # unset SESSION_MANAGER
    # exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

    If I do, I get a rootweave (grey) desktop and I cant see/do anything with it like this. However, if I do somthing like this:

    buddy@heather:~/.vnc$ vncserver :6

    New 'heather:6 (buddy)' desktop is heather:6

    Starting applications specified in /home/buddy/.vnc/xstartup
    Log file is /home/buddy/.vnc/heather:6.log

    buddy@heather:~/.vnc$

    Then I go and open a desktop: buddy-baker.us:6 I get a terminal window, and I was told that I could then run gnome-session: I do that, and get:

    buddy@heather:~$ gnome-session

  12. Good Morning :)

    The answer to your question is: You can buy a domain from whomever you want (Network Solutions, Yahoo! Domains, GoDaddy.com) and you can host it anywhere - I have my site (Buddy-Baker.us) domain through godaddy, and I have my own server, so all I do is point the A Record to the IP Address that will be assigned to the domain. That way, you can maintain the site anyway you want, and when you type the address, it will resolve to the IP you put in.

    So, if you wanted to host somewhere other then the domain provider, you can do this - Recommend however that you LOCK your domain, so someone does NOT try to transfer ownership without your permission or consent - that way, you are the ONLY one that can do that ;)

    I use a mailbox for all my mail on GD, so that way I can send mail when I need to: the first box is free with the domain, and I believe that there is a charge for additional boxes. As far as Webair, Besttechie may be able to give you information on this, should you have any other questions :D

    Good Luck!!

    Brian

    I'm brand new to starting a webpage and I was wondering, Do I have to get hosting at the same place I got the domain name?

    So for example, If I bought a domain name at godaddy but I wanted to get web hosting from webair, would I be able to do that?

  13. Hey Brian,

    I'll try and take a look later today. The login info you sent me still works right?

    B

    Jeff:

    I would appreciate that a lot - I don't know what caused this, but I also was working on my uncle's website, obtained a domain for it, tried to make a virtualhost for his domain and deleted my primary apache2 server configs, then reinstalled apache, then when going to buddy-baker.us/blog, I get some sort of php download dialog and I can't get to my blog - I even tried to reinstall the blog - regardless of what machine I use, it happens everywhere - I don't know what I borked, and I can't backup to figure out what happened,,,,,,,,I think I'm missing some packages.........ack......

    it does, but I do not know if I lost a mime type, a program or a dependancy, because when removing apache it took a bunch of things with it, and I am unable to determine why it did that, even when I uninstalled and tried to reinstall wordpress.......what a mess.........

    let me know if you need anything.....and thanks ;)

    Brian.

  15. Hello There :)

    I would also suspect that this could be a malware issue, and that you should follow TT_75's advice. usually, slow PC's indicate problems with either viruses, Malware or both. I would follow TT_75's advice, posting the required logs, and await one of our Malware Experts to take a look at the logs to determine what the problem is: DO EXACTLY what they tell you, and DO IT in the ORDER they ask you - DO NOT attempt to remove anything yourself, as this could make it harder for the helper to diagnose the problem.

    Good Luck!!

    Brian

  16. Good Afternoon Everyone:

    I recently installed Wordpress 3.01 from wordpresses website. I followed the instructions and made the wordpress database and set the permissions on it as required. I then moved the wordpress install to /var/www/blog for use by BBUS.

    Now, I have a question relating to the permissions for the wordpress files. They are all Owner "www-data" Group "www-data" and the directory is also set up the same way, like this:

    drwxr-xr-x 5 www-data www-data 4096 2010-09-03 11:56 blog

    while the rest of the directory under blog/ is owner "buddy" Group "buddy"

    Should I chown this directory to owner "buddy" group "buddy" or chown it root root. ot is there a preferrred way to make sure that a security problem does not exist with the permissions? I dont want to chown the blog directory until I am sure that wordpress won't break with the change. Apparently, I also had to chown the www directory so that I own it, so that I could upload and maintain the website as well, otherwise webstudio complains that it does not have permission to write to the directory, so I made that change.

    Any assistance here would be extremely helpful ;)

    Thanks :)

    Brian

  17. This one made me think of Marty - You OK???

    WELLINGTON (Reuters) – A major earthquake of 7.0 magnitude hit New Zealand, 30 km (20 miles) west of Christchurch early Saturday morning, causing no immediate reports of casualties but widespread damage, authorities said.

    The quake, which had a depth of 33 kms (20.5 miles), was felt throughout much of the South Island and southern parts of the North Island, but did not trigger a tsunami.

    Police in Christchurch, New Zealand's second-largest city with a population of about 342,000 people, said there were many reports of broken windows, items thrown off shelves, toppled chimneys, with power and water services disrupted

  18. Very Nice Pics: I'll have to get my Video Camera and my Still camera to get a few shots of some scenery around Vermont. It can be very beautiful this time of year. My favorite time of year is when you can see the leaves change and the weather gets a little cooler. When I was younger, I used to fish and camp at Lake Groton VT and I used to like to get up to a camp breakfast or a dinner cooked over a open fire. Those were the days. Vermont is a very beautiful place to live, work and play :)
