  1. Good Morning Team!!

I was using my Ipod Touch (64GB) and I downloaded a new show that I like. It would error out and then say "Tap to retry" It would download most of the way and then error out, and seems to be in an endless download loop when I connect to Wifi. Problem is, that I downloaded it successfully and it is on the Ipod, but it would want to redownload itself, error out and stay in the download queue of the Ipod and would NOT go away for a while.

It finally downloaded all the way in the download queue, BUT:

Is there a way to stop downloads in progress. and delete them from the queue, so that everytime you login on wireless, it does not want to continually download this show or app that failed 10-15 times? Every place I read about this talks about resetting the ipod, and I don't want to lose the content on the device - I also cannot believe that the answer to this question is not as direct and simple, as it would be for deleting apps: Simply tap and hold the icon till it shakes and then delete it......

Can anyone help me so that the NEXT time this happens, I wont have an endless download loop on a purchased download that fails on the ipod?

    Thanks

    Brian

  2. Please describe the problem.

    Good Morning:

As Falcon1986 states, if you will describe the problem(s) you are having, as well as the version of windows you are using, and the Version of Internet Explorer you are using, this would be helpful. Without this information, it will be difficult to assist you in determining what the problem is, or how to go about solving it.

    Thank You!

  3. Found This article on Yahoo, Posted it to BBUS Blog (BBUS Blog Article Link) and figured it would be a good article to post here:

    Article Via Yahoo

Equally Important in the article, is the information below: I am not sure how many of you may have an "Unsecured Wireless Network" but it is important to lock your network down to avoid snoopers, or leeches that can use the connection for immoral or unethical purposes. The FBI could arrect you or confiscate any computers connected to your network due to anyone leeching off your connection. While in training at Geeks to Go, I learned that even if the network is "unsecured" it is still considered stealing internet, even if the owner of the connection is unaware of the fact that the conenction is NOT locked down.

For this reason, I ALWAYS let my clients know that if they have a wireless connection, to use the latest protocols available for security, and to make sure that the connection is LOCKED with a security key. If they do not know what that is, I will do it for them, and explain what I am doing and why - It is easier to take the extra 10-20 minutes of time to check the security setup, rather then to see a problem later because someone did NOT set up thier connection securely.

The article also points out that router manufactrers seem to be of the mindset that the "easy way is the only way", meaning that they work "out of the box" without much security in place. Routers like this make them harder to secure because they don't have the security to protect the user, or the advanced configurations needed to open ports for gaming or Internet services. I have even dealt with Verizon and Fairpoint and when you have to be able to open some ports or make changes to the configurations, either the router supports them, and they are hard to locate, or they don't support some configurations at all. Equally frustrating is the fact that the vendors (Verizon/Fairpoint in my example) do NOT support the modem's advanced features (westell 7500. etc versalink gateway), there is NO update page for firmware or other updates, and you have to hunt for the user manual to be able to conigure the router - and even that is hit or miss.

The "Easy Way" is NOT necessarily the right way or the safe way to go - You have to be able to configure the router you get, and you have to be able to update it and get relevant information that makes sense - or the router is not easy tro work with. Consumers have to be aware of the dangers of leaving thier wireless connections open to everyone, and hence this article is a good start.

It is important that you lock your wireless network down. WEP (wired equivalent privacy) encryption has as many holes as Swiss cheese, and can be easily cracked in a matter of seconds, but even turning on such weak protection is better than nothing. If you scan any given neighborhood for wireless networks, you will find at least one that has no encryption turned on, and that low-hanging fruit is the network that will draw attention rather than a network that requires hacking to connect to.

But, to provide better security you should use WPA or WPA-2 encryption. With most home and SOHO (small office / home office) wireless routers, it is as simple as logging in to the Admin console, enabling the encryption, and setting a password. However, as this recent incident demonstrates, "simple" is relative, and enabling wireless encryption is easier said than done for many users.

The real answer, though, lies with the wireless router vendors. Unfortunately, convenience and simplicity trump security. Wi-Fi routers are designed to just work right out of the box. They live up to the claims in most cases--as long as your only concern is being able to connect to the wireless network and start surfing the Internet. But, if you also want your wireless network to be secure, they don't work so well out of the box after all.

Users who are not tech savvy, and want the convenience of a wireless router that "just works" are not likely to invest the time and effort to learn about the inner-workings of the router, or to understand and enable the security features. Wireless routers should be designed with encryption enabled by default, and part of the initial configuration should involve stepping the user through the process of establishing a unique SSID, and setting a secure password.

For now, though, that ball is in your court. Do yourself a favor and take the 15 minutes to figure out how to log into the admin console for your Wi-Fi router and turn on encryption to prevent unauthorized piggy-backing. If you don't, the next knock on your door might be the FBI--and they might not be there for pleasant chit-cha

This is why I keep my network secure - There are only two other people who uses my network, and I gave them the access and watch it like a hawk :)

  4. Texann:

I am pleased that you were able to get it to work - It is my pleasure to assist you with this :)

    Brian

Thanks Brian...I got it to work. I appreciate your help.

I am having big problems trying to set up remote desktop on my Mac. I have VNC set up at work on my PC and I have VNC and Remote Desktop on my Mac. I think I have gotten everything set up ok but when I try to log in to my PC it tells me "The local policy of this system does not permit you to logon interactively." So is this a problem on my end or the PC end? Also, I can't get into the login without having VNC connected. I was told that wasn't necessary but it won't work without it.

    Good Evening Texann:

I am asssuming that you have VNC server running on your work PC, and setup properly, but you have to make sure that you have set the ports for the access to the server (Usually 5900 or 5901) and that you have to make sure that you open those ports on your router. For example, you have to open port 5900 on your router at home, and open port 5900 at work too. (If you want to go Both ways, you have to configure the work IP so that it can connect to your home PC - that way, you can access your home desktop as well. On BBUS, I simply assign an IP, open the ports I want and forward them to the main IP for my machines. This way, I can serve stuff off the web.

To do this, go into your router, and find something that says "forwarding" in advanced: You will mostlikely see something that says "Local IP" "Start Port" "End Port" "Protocol" "Enable" (checkbox)

So if your ip was something like 192.168.0.15, and you wanted to open port 5900, you would enter the local IP address (In my case, I have a motorola surfboard) so i'd enter .15 at the end, because the local IP has the 192.168.0. already there. I'd enter 15 for the LOCAL IP of the mac machine, then where it asks for the start port, put 5900, for the end port, put 5900. For the Protocol, choose "BOTH" Then, click a box that says "enable", and click APPLY

Then, on your work machine, Open VNC Server (I use Tight VNC) and under "Server Tab" Check the box that says "accept incoming connections" and adjust the server port number to the one that allows you to connect to the work PC (Port 5900) - You can change this if you wish, just make sure you open the proper ports in both routers if you do. Check the box for "require VNC authentication" Then set a Primary Pasword, which will be the one that will get you into the VNC server, which you will run on your work machine. If you want to enable WEB access, check this box, and set the port to something other then 5900 or 5901 - Id set it to like 6001 - This allows you to use a Java viewer to access the work machine. You would be able to then open a wen browser, and enter http://200.100.10.100:6001 and hit Enter. After a few minutes, you should get a box asking for your password. Enter it, and you will be able to access your desktop in a web browser window.

Now, go to Administration Tab: Click the box that says "protect control operations with an administrative password" When you do this, you have a Password: area that will light up so you can "set" the password. Set one at the office and then click apply. Start VNC server at work, leaving your work machine on.

So lets just say that your address at work was 200.100.10.100. and you opened port 5900 at work (5900 is the default VNC port for the first desktop) - Fire up a VNC viewer, and you will see this: (I entered the 200.100.10.100 in the box for this example)

    Capture.PNG

When it connects it will look like this (substitute buddy-baker.us for your work ip in the picture above)

Enter your password, which you use to connect to your work machine, which is running VNC Server. Click OK.

    Capture2.PNG

If successful, you should see your work desktop: if I connect to Buddy-baker.us's desktop for my username, it looks like this through VNC Viewer:

    Capture3.PNG

As far as Remote desktop: Note The Remote Desktop Connection Client for the Mac supports only port 3389. 3389 is the default port. I bellieve the only thing you have to do is to open port 3389 in the work router to work this, and allow only the IP's you use. I do this for my work when my boss wants to have me work on a server: I Remote in using a RDC, and then when done, he can take out the IP for my system.

Good Luck: I hope this Helps!!

  6. Howdy: Here is an UPDATE for the blogs we manage.

I was able to install XAMPP and get it working on localhost (Techno20 = my laptop) Once I noticed that I was able to use Tools>Export and choose "all content", I was able to export the data from barrecity.info and the landlords blog. I exported both installs data files, then saved these files as XML files as directed.

Second, I made accounts for each install (On BBUS) and made public_html directories for both accounts. Configured a single install for Barrecity.info on BBUS, and a single install for Landlords on BBUS - There are 2 seperate installs, so 2 seperate databases. unzipped wordpress, set permissions, and then edited wp-config.php and ran the install. Once that was online, grabbed the wordpress-importer.0.7.4 and installed and activated it for both installs.

Last, I imported the xml files for each blog, and it asked me which user to attribute the posts to, chose "admin" and it imported EVERY POST, comment, etc!!! YAY ME!!!

Now, I can repeat that on wordpress, barrecity.info, without having to screw with the databases: I just will IMPORT what I have for each blog, then backup the DB's and take notes: and BOOM: we are all set ;)

I STILL want to learn how to edit the phpmyadmin (SQL Databases) in case this happens again - want to be able to fix this should something strange happen and the XML files get huge,,........

    Brian

  7. Hello Falcon! Thanks for the information - Got another situation for you - maybe you or someone that is proficient with database editing can help me here.

OK here is the suituation: I was able to grab the "wordpress" database from a running copy of XAMPP by simply backing up the copy in mysql\data\wordpress, by using PHPMYADMIN. I backed up the database and called it "technoblogs_db.sql.

The server that we were using was named "technoblogs" but we could not get wordpress to install to anything other then localhost/wordpress and localhost/wordpress/landlords. Dan was able to fix the problem by telling me the following:

Dan told me that in order for a blog to work, the blog title, the site

URL and the wordpress URL have to match, or the system will NOT install

the blog correctly. The domain for the blog looks for a match in ALL

THREE areas: The problem that Brian encountered was that he was NOT

matching the blog title with the SITE URL and the Wordpress URL - He

thought he was using the name "technoblogs" which is the name of the

physical MACHINE, which is WRONG - This causes the blog to default to

    "localhost", which broke the install.

Noted on 4-15-11 @ 10:07 am by Brian

So, Dan was able to install the blog to the domain wordpress.barrecity.info/blog and wordpress.barrecity.info/blog/landlords His Database is "wordpress", so in order to make it so I won't break anything, I called the database technoblogs_db.sql. I spent the better part of the day trying to import the data from the old blog sites. Blog site 1 is barrecity.info, Blog site 2 is the Landlords Blog. I was able to follow the following instructions (Backing Up a Wordpress Blog and Installing it Locally using XAMPP) I did the instructions, and changed all the URL's as requested, made a site in Dreamweaver, and all that stuff, but what I want to know is the following:

    1. Is there a QUICK way to change all of the URL's in an SQL Database so that whatever you put there, the data will be able to be read? Dan would like to use the data cotained in the technoblogs database, so that we can ADD to what he has already there - Every time I try to do it, it wants to go to wordpress.barrecity.info/wordpress and wordpress.barrecity.info/wordpress/landlords - and I want it to be able to use the current URL's without breaking the current setup.

    2. Is there a way to take a 2 blog system, and use the data from a specific blog, effectively splitting an SQL Database into 2 pieces so that I can use ONLY the data from a specific site (IE our Landlords Site? - I want to become more proficient in SQL so that I can install blogs and work with Databases like a Pro - I may have to throw these databases in really fast and bring servers online with our wordpress server being a part of it.

    3. Which URL's do you need to clear/change other then the ones listed in the instructions? I was able to take the blogs locally using XAMPP, but want to make sure I know what to do in the event that I need to word with the domain listed: apparently, there are several places where you need to change the URL, and I had to take it to localhost, or it would point to the wrong domain - If I can get some help here, I can learn what to change, and be able to make changes to domains in the SQL, and save time if I have to restore an old database.

Any help anyone can give me here would be GREATLY appreciated, as I learn the ropes of PHPMyADMIN.

    Thanks :D

    Brian

  8. Pete:

I hope that your wife is OK and it sounds that she is going to be OK: I have a roll in shower, so I have a bench seat that is attached to the wall, and 2 large grab bars on the inside of the shower. I also have a "nurse call" cord that runs from the toilet to the shower, so in the event of an accident, I can pull the cord. When this happens, a bell sounds, and there is a solid white lite that comes on outside my door. Then, all a person has to do is walk up, pull open the door, and search for the person that is down. This is a good system, because the minute the cord is pulled, the door unlocks.

I usually have my wheelchair on the outside of the shower, so all I do is roll to a stop, apply the brakes, and stand pivot - having a shower like this is a dream, because I can easily take a shower. The only downside is that the water sometimes gets away from the burm stop and gets ALL OVER the floor, and means that I or BHA have to mop it up, as the floor drain is NOT in the right place to eliminate any water overflow.

    Take Care,

    Brian

  9. Good Afternoon everyone:

Just a quick question: I KNOW that you are supposed to backup wordpress databases PRIOR to running an upgrade, but something happened one day on one of our servers that caused a white screen of death when logged in as an admin on the server. I did not backup anything proior to the upgrade of the server in question, which was running a network upgrade to version 3.1. It HUNG, and then when attempting to login again it showed me a login screen, but when you login, you get a white screen.

Is there a way to somwhow go through the wordpress and xampp installs to see where the database files may be hiding?? Ii I could find them, I may be able to put the databases back and fix the problem, but I had to reinstall xampp and wordpress (however I DID save the old files from the old installations of both).

Seems as if the ONLY way to get these things is to make them all SQL files...........is there any hope of saving the posts/setup from the old setup even after reinstalling wordpress so that I can access this stuff?

If someone could give me advice or a hand here, I would appreciate it - Lucky for me, on BBUS, I backup databases regularly using phpmyadmin! :)

  10. Hello Everyone:

I was wondering if there are any of you that may know how to configure postfix to allow me to send mail from my linux box? I have postfix responding, but it will not apparently send mail out correctly - comes back witb errors that make it look like the hosts I send to don't like my server. I want to be able to send outnound mail so that when my friend sets up his website and forms, I can then use CGI/Perl/formmail to send out mail from the forms that I generate in html.

However, I need some help with configuring podtfix to allow mail to arrive at the destinations I send to, and I think the postfix server runs right, but I think I need to configure a couple things to allow outboud mail to be sent and accepted, and not have bbus marked as a spammer.

Can anyone give me a hand on this one? I would GREATLY appreciate it!

  11. Good Afternoon Everyone:

I just wanted to post this up so everyone can see this one. After a few months of working on my server (BBUS) I am pleased to announced that my Blog is available from HERE - I will try to post relevant and interesting information for all to see.

    Check it out!!

I like the commercials - They are cherry, relevant, and informative and catch your eye! You did a good job with these. You are right about advertising, and that you should NOT spread yourself too thin. I wish you and your company well, and I hope to see more commercials as you move forward!

  13. I was not born when this happened, but I do remember the Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster (1986) and the Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster (2003). I can tell you EXACTLY where I was on both occaisions, and I believe what I was doing. I will forever remember the words "Challenger, GO with Throttle up" and Commander Dick Scobee's response "Roger, Go with throttle up" Then a POOF, and a trail of fire that came down in a hell of a hurry.

My friend Rex was the one that told me that "The Space Shuttle blew up." I was like "Nooooo WAY" and I went to a teacher and another friend who confirmed it - I don't think I will ever forget that, or NASA's announcement "It appears to be a major malfunction........The vehicle has exploded." I was in 6th ot 7th grade at the time.

In 2003, I was awaiting the landing of Columbia, when I heard via the radio that Columbia had "broken up over Texas" I was in SHOCK, because we had lost Challenger, and 7 astronauts, and now we would lose another 7. I believe I was enroute to Portsmouth Navel Shipyard, for Family Day aboard USCGC Reliance (WMEC-615), I am sure that there are other disasters that people remember, but I always will remember that for each time we go to space, or go to work, or respond to an Emergency, a Fire, etc that there is always a risk inherant with anything like this: For those that have lost their lives in disasters like this, we should always rememeber them, for they are the pioneers, our saviors, and our protectors.

  14. Good Afternoon Everyone:

I have attempted to backup BBUS by following the instructions HERE. In those instrructions, it tells me to do the following as a ONE line command

    tar -zcvpf /archive/full-backup-`date '+%d-%B-%Y'`.tar.gz \ --directory / --exclude=mnt --exclude=proc --exclude=var/spool/squid .

Of course, I have a different system partition that I want to use for the backup, so I want to use it like this:

    tar -zcvpf /home/admin/fullbackup/full-backup-`date '+%d-%B-%Y'`.tar.gz \ --directory / --exclude=mnt --exclude=proc --exclude=var/spool/squid .

I get '/home/admin/fullbackup/full-backup-' (missing the Dates on this, as well as the file extension that indicates the TAR.GZ - very important, right? However the syntax appears to be incorrect.

When I do that, I get a file that is lasking the Date as shown above, because I think there is a problem with my syntax. so I went to another site and grabbed a syntax that goes like this:

    tar -zcvpf /home/admin/fullbackups/fullbackup.tar.gz --directory=/ --exclude=proc --exclude=sys --exclude=dev/pts --exclude=fullbackups .

I had to remove the DATE stuff from the syntax before she would work right, and I need to make sure that the dates and times are there., so I used the 2nd example for this and got a file that looks like this:

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1883226126 2011-02-09 12:32 fullbackup.tar.gz

What I want to do is to set up a script that I can run as cron that will do a FULL BACKUP once month, and an incremental backup that will pick up the important directories that have stuff change every week. Then I want to have these dated and timestamped in case there is some sort of failure, and delete the older files. but I have no idea how to write such a script - can someone possibly assist me with this, so I do NOT backup backups of files move then once?

What I want to do is streamline backups so that I can rasily manage and restore them.

Thanks for any help you all can provide ;)

    Brian

  15. Hello Everyone:

Some time ago, I posted A Question about Server upgrade and Backup Since that time, I have upgraded the system to include all upgrades to the relevant files, have installed and configured Wordpress, upgraded it to 3.04 and have run the sytem update utility so that all my debian files are up to date as of this posting.

I have also ran the update utility for webmin and have upgraded to the next version (Webmin version 1.530) and have performed the update that it wanted. Now, I want to command the system to do the following.

    1. Backup MYSQL Databases for BBUS' Blog

    2. Backup the BLOG files, etc on BBUS - (/var/www/blog/

    3. Backup all website files - (/var/www/

    4. Backup all files in /etc/

    5. Backup all files in /var

    6. Backup all files in /home/

    7. Backup additional files that the Linux Gurus think are necessary

Then, I want to Make the system drop files to /home/baker7/backup.Date/ and have the /var/, /var/www/, and /var/www/blog/ directories have the information. These files should be TAR files, and available by going to the directory and searching the backups by date. I also want to have the blog database backed up as well as the /home directory files. so you have files that look like this:

    etc-Date.tar

    Var.Date.tar

    www-Date.tar

    blog-Date.tar

    home-Date.tar

    Database-Date.tar

    misc-files-Date.tar

I may not know how to make the script to do this, but I have a pretty good idea of what I want to do - Then I will back these files UP onto my 1TB WD drive and then burn the backups to disc later. I also want to be able to delete the older files if they are still there - This is so I don't bork it and have a system that is missing files. In the event of a crash, then I should be able to run an undo script as well, but I want to automate this, so that it does it on a schedule and so if I crash, I don't have to ding around with usernames, passwords, permissions, etc. If this script can be run on a regular basis and I can make sure these files don't get corrupted, I will ALWAYS have the backups. Last time I did this, I did it manually, and it took a few hours.

Can anyone give me an idea of how to do what I want, and or recommend any other files that should be backed up? I want to do this sometime in the next couple weeks.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide ;)

    Brian

  16. I noticed a lot of link references to localhost, so perhaps Apache was still passing this information to WordPress when it should have been sending the domain name.

Glad it worked out for you. BTW, WordPress was updated to v3.0.4, so you might want to update.

  17. Good Morning!

Today, I am working on installing wordpress 3.03 after we experienced a Clamwin Antivirus update that hosed our blog server. We have since reinstalled Windows Server 2003 R2 Stanadard Edition, Service Pack 2 and XAMPPlite, which appears to be working fine.

The Problem is, that we have a site called Barrecity.info Blog that we want to link to the main site of Barrecity Dot Info. We have installed and configured XAMPPlite, and it appears to be working well, EXCEPT that if you go to the BarreCity.info BLOG, the Theme Pictures will NOT show at all, and will come up as BIG Boxes with a red X instead of the TwentyTen Theme. This occurs for all people accessing it from the outside.

The Only way to see the Theme TwentyTen, is to Remote to the Server and then launch IE from the server, and give http://localhost/wordpress as the address. Any attempt to adjust the settings in the Admin Panel causes the pictures NOT to show from outside, and I am not sure why, and I need some help on this one, because I am not sure what the problem is, and I am going to have to put Multisite use into operation soon - I think there is a Linking problem or something that I did not see, or a permissions problem: However, I am unaware of any problem, because the only account on this box is an admin account - any changes to this control panel seem to muck up the setup and cause me to have to DROP, the Databases, uninstall Wordpress, and then Recreate the Databases, and install again.

Is there anything Anyone can do to help me solve this: We don't believe that this has happened before, and we may have to make adjustments to the domain or the server, but we are not sure. Any help you can give me here would be GREATLTY Appreciated!!

    Thanks,

    Brian

  18. Good Morning!!

When You "sync up" an ipod, I am assuming that you will or have been using Itunes. (Version 10 is current) If you use itunes, you can usually put them on the ipod, and transfer things from your ipod to Tunes, if you have pictures that you have put there as a result of using your Ipod, then you would have to make sure BEFORE the sync of the Ipod that EVERYTHING you want synced is checked, and this can be done if you connect your ipod to your Mac or PC (I use a PC) and then click on your IPOD - check to see that all areas (Music, Videos, apps, photos etc) containing the content you want to sync are checked and that there are no greyed out areas in itunes that may contain what you are looking for, or what will happen when you sync up, is that anything you downloaded that is NOT checked for syncronization will be DELETED because it was NOT checked off in your Ipod config.

Also, You MAY be able to use your Ipod Nano as a hard drive. I have the Ipod Touch - To do this, simply connect Nano to your computer and you can open it and see if anything is on the Nano that is NOT related to the sync. Using Ipods as portable hard drives can be helpful sometimes - Maybe the pictures you have are there?

If Not, do you have a place where you would place pictures on the Mac? Perhaps they may be on your machine somewhere if not in Itunes - I did not see a place for picture storage in itunes 10 - although I have only had my Ipod since Christmas Eve.

Good Luck, and I hope this info is helpful!!
