  1. Good Morning all:

I have been noticing all of the hype surrounding the new Xbox One Console. There are several improvements that seem to make it more of an 'Family Entertainment System' then ever before. It looks really cool - but honestly, I don't think I would buy it based on the presentations I've seen on my 360.

In the old days, you could play many games, and some of them were compatible with the Original XBox and the 360 - This amount has been increased so that most of the games that CAN be played on both systems usually ARE played on both systems. The New XBox One seems to have eliminated backwards-compatibility, and also the need to use discs. This also KILLS the used game market, and makes everything more expensive, when I think that it should be LESS expensive to get some of these games.

The XB One is also a 3OS device, because of what it can do, but with everything being cloud based, what guarentee does one have that information will be stored on your device, or that you will be able to play any games you own on your new system? Failing to allow us to play 360 titles on XB one will mean that you have to maintain 2 XBoxes to play games, when the idea of the XB One is to bring everything together and centralize it to your home entertainment experience - Sure, you can watch TV and "snap to" other applictions and see everything in 1080p, but at what cost? If you can't play your old games, what good is a new system, a new OS and a NEW Kinnect Sensor, or a machine that HAS to BE Connected to the Internet 24/7 and "Check in with MS" every 24 hours?

While I am impresed with the new system, I doubt I would buy a system that wants to make it impossible to play my 360 titles, because I feel that it is an investment that I should be able to maintain ONE Console, without having to pay more for the new machine, only to have to repurchase other games,

I hope that there is a FIRESTORM over some of this, and that MS will change the way they will do this......or I may NOT buy another Xbox - except the 360 - Who the HELL thinks up this strategy??? Geez!!

    This is MY Opinion.......any thoughts.........

  2. Good Morning:

I have been noticing that BBUS has been getting SLOW on the connection, and when she does, it seems that it takes 10-15 minutes to get to a login screen, and sometimes longer to get to a shell prompt. On it's last restart, I did a 'last' to see what was going on and got this:

    buddy@heather:~$ last
buddy pts/0 discovery.buddy- Fri Jun 7 21:39 still logged in
    reboot system boot 2.6.26-2-686 Fri Jun 7 20:14 - 23:00 (02:45)

    buddy@heather:~$ w

I am looking specifically at the following lines of last:

buddy pts/0 discovery.buddy- Fri Jun 7 21:39 still logged in
    reboot system boot 2.6.26-2-686 Fri Jun 7 20:14 - 23:00 (02:45)
    root pts/0 discovery.buddy- Fri Jun 7 19:17 - down (00:01)

Does this log indicate that BBUS took 2 HOURS and 45 MINUTES to fully restart? I am thinking that there may be something that is slowing down my server, but BBUS is on its OWN seperate Network, on its own 10MEG Down connection.

Is it normal for a server to take that long when you do a 'shutdown now -r'?

  3. Saw that this morning but thought i'd just let it lay ! Mabey Brian had a brain fart ........ lol

I thought that thing was from like 2012 - My Bad hehehehe - But I usually LOATHE any sites that say you can "watch anything" for *free* Most times, loads your PC with Garbage :(

    Brian

  4. Good Morning Maxwell:

I would stay away from ANY website that tries to SUCK YOU IN by telling you that you can watch ANY TV show out there on these "dodgy" sites - I would ONLY use sites such as Youtube, Netflix, Hulu and Possibly Veoh - anything else is just an ad-ridden experience, likely to install/infect your machine with garbage.

    Take Care,

    Brian

  5. Thank You Chuck!

I had a great day, and spent it at home, enjoying my new MOH: Warfighter Game, and my New Forza: Horizon Game. Had a few cals from family, friends and neighbors, and TONS of facebook messages! Had a Blast during this "downtime"

    Take Care :)

    Happy Birthday, Brian! :)

    Thank You Hitest :)

  6. Thank You all:

Yesterday, Spent time with my Mom and Stepdad, and saw my Dad on the 9th. I am truly blessed: For my birthday I got some money, my New Eyeglasses with sunclips, (grey) a New Shirt, a leather Targus Ipad/Ipad2 case, a Logitec G500 Gaming Mouse, and an iTunes Card. I also was able to enjoy a chicken dinner, with asparagus, zucchini, Potato Salad with Dijon Mustard, and a gingerbread dessert.

I also got to see my parents new additions: I believe they are Imacs - and I was able to use a G500 gaming mouse that my stepdad uses ;-)

I enjoyed the evening, and even my brother Dan came by and brought ice cream :) I spent the day with my MOM, which is important to me, and enjoyed myself!

Of course, who could forget my friends here on BT - They are AWESOME too :D

  8. So it looks like you took videos of the camera with what?

    Pete:

I took still photos of the Video Camera using my Sony DSC-S730 Digital Camera, which I then uploaded to BBUS Blog's Media Section so that people could see the new Camera. I tried to make a full HD Video to place on youtube, and then hooked like 5 smaller 2-3 minute ckips together to make a 5:25 Second video of my Dad and the family Dogs, but when uploaded to youtube, it cut it to 1:30. I've also done that with a couple other test videos (9-10 minutes long) that was cut to 1:00. I've used the standard def setting (mp2) and the HD setting (mt2s) and I can't seem to figure out why my videos are being shortened by youtube.

Once I find out, I can upload the full video to youtube.

Does anyone know what is going on with this?? Jeff Might.......

  9. You can set up Wordpress to be in a directory other than the root - This is how buddy-baker.us/blog is set up - there are a lot of help topics in the wordpress support pages, and I lnow for a fact that there are lots of cool plugins you can use. If you want to install it on your own server though, make sure to read all of the instructions, and follow them EXACTLY, because you can make mistakes that can cause problems. The Famous 5 Minute Install Should help you if you want to install it on your own server.

    Good Luck!!

  10. I do not believe that changes to BT are needed or necessary as far as they go now. Jeff is very aware of what he is doing with his site, and knows what works and what does not - He also can probably say what is doable and what is not.

I've been with BT since 2005 - There have been a lot of advances in technology since then, and I have seen changes made when they are needed or necessary. I personally have NOTHING AGAINST BC or BT, but if you turn BT into a Bleeping Computer type site, I believe you lose some of what makes BT a special place. The BT site has informative content, and specialized content that make it what it is.

You also have staff and users who have been here for a LONG time, and we will support BT and Jeff as he strives to make this place better. BT was the place I came to when the TechTV/G4TTV/G4 stuff was rampant. This place has helped me in many ways, has helped me keep my machines clean, increased my communication and skills with computers, and has been a "home" for me since 2005.

Things have to change sometimes to make them work well. I believe that Jeff has a finger on the pulse of this place, and that his recent changes to the website make it easier to access, post and interact with his user base. With the recent acquisition of G4 by esquire, I have a feeling that a lot of of our userbase will retrun to provide more interaction and support to our community.

I can tell you from experience - You can be a member of many Internet Forums, chat rooms, Blogs, Websites, etc - But once you find one that you feel comfortable being a member of, it it is hard to let go of your home base. I have a lot of friends here, and I glad for each one of them, and for what that have helped me to become. Jeff's Youtube Channel also has a lot of great Content, and I hope that he is able to continue the great stuff that he is known for ;-)

Jeff: You are AMAZING: I don't know how you do what it is you do - You are indeed a godsend - and I THANK YOU for what you do, your efforts, your ideas, your patience and understanding - Besttechie is AWESOME, and it is made so by the people who are here supporting you, and it is made possible because of your vision and drive to keep up to date on tech-related content.

You are the MAN - Never forget that ;)

    Respectfully,

    Hey Brian,

Thanks so much for the kind words! I really appreciate everything you said, it means a lot to me -- it really does. I don't even know how to say how happy I got when I read your post. All I can say is I do what I do and will continue to do what I do because of our community members (such as yourself) both current and future.

We're (all of us) going to build the best tech site on the Internet. And the reason I know this is because we have the best community ever and I will do everything I can to keep it that way. Here's to the future of BT -- it's going to be great! :)

    B

    Jeff:

You're WELCOME!! and I MEANT every word of it too!! Far too Often websites want to change what they do, what they serve or who they are. They do this, but sometimes I think they forget who they were, and who they are. I believe BT to be the site that knows what it is, who it serves, what its mission is, and has a firm hand on where it wants to go. You have to take a LONG look at what you do, who you serve and your mission before you can make any decisions on what and if changes are necessary.

I am PROUD of you and what you have done, and I recommend BT to those who may have issues with computers that our team may be able to solve. I see the efforrt that you put into this place and it shows - Tech related topics can change REALLY fast, and you seem to have found a way to make this information pertenant and plentiful, while giving your honest opinion on many topics and devices. BT is what it is because of YOU, the way you deal with information, and what you decide is good information. BT is also what it is because of your userbase - We are here to support you all the way - BT is special because of the way we run, and I feel that we are like a family - How many guys can say that they have turned a love of computers and technology into a place like this - VERY FEW - You have done that, and done it well!

I try to follow my deams too - I. like you, have helped many people over the years - My dream is to continue to run BBUS (buddy-baker.us) and learn how to do it well. I also like to blog as well, so I am trying to find ways to fix it up so it looks cool. I will send you an email to let you know where I stand and see if you may be able to give me a hand :)

Keep on Truckin Dude - Your The BEST!!!

  11. Good Morning ;)

It is Good to see that the people that used to hang at G4 are coming back - I believe that we have some of the best Malware removal staff around. I know that because many of them are still in the fight, and even though I stopped training, I feel that we have good people that know what they are doing. I trained with some of the best - I want to thank those who have agreed to help us out at BT, and say that I am glad to be a member here.

This place is AWESOME - Bring them HOME :D

    Hi everyone,

I'm fairly new to UNIX and I'm having some problems with my programs. I wrote a program in C that would take input from a file and strip it of its comments. Now when I try to run the command:

    q1 < testFiles

in my terminal, it says "q1: command not found". q1 is the name of my program I wrote in C, I believe this is called input redirection. I've been searching google and trying to make sense of this for the past hour but to no avail. My professor says he uses the Bourne shell but that was of no help to me. It works on the computers we have at university, just not on my home linux computer. I'm running XFCE just like my school does as well, this is really starting to annoy me.

If anyone has any insight on this it would be greatly appreciated as I have been going absolutely nowhere on this so far.

    Thanks!

    Good Afternoon :)

Try this: you may have to chage the mode (chmod u+x q1) because if this file is executable file, it will not run without being Executable. Second, when I have to run an executable, I have to use a ./programname to get it to run. so you should try to do

    ./q1 <testFiles .

    and see what happpens

Let me know if this works for you ;)

  14. Perhaps it is time to upgrade to 6.0?

Check out the release notes prior to upgrading however. Back-up your stuff.

    Release notes

    Good Morning Hitest :D

I have tried at least once to update to squeeze (6.0) and had backed up everything before doing it - However, there seems to be a problem with my server being able to handle Grub's new version, so I ended up CRASHING the server, which runs my website and blog and had to reinstall Lenny because of the crash. I am reluctant to make any upgrades without knowing why this happened.

    Brian

  15. End of life for Lenny. You need to access the archives,

    Errors on installing autofs

Lenny reached it's EOL (end of life) in early February. On Mar. 25th the Lenny packages were removed from the debian.org servers, they are now on the archive.debian.org server.

In your sources.list you need to change the Lenny debian.org repo entries to the following:

deb http://archive.debian.org/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free

If you were using either the Lenny debian-security or volatile repo there's also these repos that are now on the archive.debian.org server.

    deb http://archive.debian.org/debian-security/ lenny/updates main contrib non-free

    deb http://archive.debian.org/debian-volatile/ lenny/volatile main contrib non-free

    Thanks TT :D

Made a change to the Sources. I commented out the old stuff and added in the new stuff and she seems to work, although I don't know if I will be able to get updates that keep Lenny from having problems. Do they still work to plug security holes and other things with older versions?

    Brian

  16. Hello Everyone:

I tried to update using the update Manager in Debian Lenny and when I did that I got a triangle with an exclamation point - I think my sources list needs to be updated, because I cant get updates for Lenny and have not have them for about a month - can someone tell me where I can still get Lenny sources: This is my output from apt-get update:

  17. Hi Lefty,

I know E machines was sold to gateway at one point, and I'm not sure who owns it now. I don;t know how likely it would be to get a restore disk from them. I know you can get a restore disk from restore disk.com. I have purchased a restore disk from them before and it worked great, and it just happened to be for an emachines. Hope that helped.

    Take care,

    Pat

    Hello Everyone:

Emachines was sold to Acer - as was Gateway - so you may be able to get the required disk from Acer :)

    Hope that Helps........
