  1. Pete:

I had not thought of the security settings, but I will investigate this:  The ONLY site that will not open at this time on my friend's machine is the Facebook, via IE9 - so I will have to try this one out, and see if it works :-)  Thank You for that Assist - I will Post sometime this weekend, and let you know what happens ;)

(If This does NOT work, I'll run an MBAM 2.0.whatever version scan and see if there are any pieces of Malware, and have Chuck see if he can find anything on his machine)

Thanks for the Assist My Friend ;)

  2. Pete:

I am aware that the 3100 probably wont work with a Windows 7 Machine, but If you could find a way to make this Scanning/faxing and possibly printing work as a work around it would be great - As It is Now, she has to hook up the XP Pro Machine to the Internet to Scan and Fax, which to me is a security risk, since all sensible workarounds are gonna be missing the UPDATES that would be necessary to keep the network safe.....

    Thanks,

    Brian

  3. UPDATE:

I was Unable to use the 3100 Driver because there is no support anywhere for the 3100 Laserjet, in Win7, Unless I was gonna use Windows XP Mode on a VM.  Being that there are no further updates or support for such a machine, I was uncomfortable with this solution.  The ONLY thing she needs this Laserjet 3100 for is to SCAN documents or to fax.  So, being resourceful, I realized that she has the Laserjet 5 networked to her machine.  So I downloaded the 32-bit version of the Universal HP PCL 5/6 Printer driver, Used the Printer wizard to determine the IP Address of the Networked LJ5, and then installed the PCL5/6 driver, and pointed it to the IP of the networked printer.

Now, all I have to do is find a workaround for the scanning and printing.  Right now, all we do is switch the network cable from the 7 machine to the xp machine and print/scan what she needs - This can be inconvenient, but I find no support for the 3100, unless the PCL5/6 driver can be used with the 3100.

  4. Good Morning All:

I have been asked to see if I can help my roommate.  He has a Dell Inspiron Desktop Running Viata 64-Bit, with IE 9.  As many of you may be aware, ie9 is the LAST browser that will work with Vista, so the only way that he could upgrade would be to upgrade to Windows 7 so that he could use IE10.

What happens is that when my Roommate tries to open Facebook using IE9, it will tell him that the page cannot be found or cannot be opened.  All of the rest of his sites open in IE, and Facebook WILL open in Firefox.  Calvin thinks that he may have hot a button some night when using it when it was dark, causing this issue, and he says that it was working before.

I have tried to do a browser reset to correct the problem to no avail - I can try again to see if this may solve the problem, but I doubt it - Does anyone have any idea how to force the browser back to normal, or know of anything else that could cause Facebook to give a "Cannot Open Webpage" Type Message??

Any help would be and is greatly Appreciated!!

    Thanks,

    Brian

  5. Chuck:

Or they will choose usernames that are easy to spot - either ones that show a company name like livewellfitness, or something that is spammy in its own right.........Luckily, we have good staff here that can get rid of this crap,

  7. Hello Everyo9ne:

Recently, helped a family member that has an old Windows XP Pro Machine - We were able to upgrade her to a Windows 7 Pro Machine.  However, she has an OLD HP Laserjet 3100 that she uses to pront documents on the older XP Machine.  I bought her the cable that will make it so that you can hook up this printer to her USB Port, but the problem is that I have read on the internet that it is possible to get a driver for this printer, then it seems that you cannot, but I need to know if there is a driver that can be used with this 3100 - I know this printer is old, but with limited resources, is there a way to make this printer weork with windows7??

    Any Help would be appreciated!

    Thanks,

  8. I work as the Operations Manager for my friend's Church's Thrift Store.  They have given us use of their network to allow us to complete any internet related tasks.  They have an LTD7904 Video System that they use to monitor activities in the church.  They set it up so that we can use IE to connect to this system to remotely monitor the cameras.

The PROBLEM:  The system ONLY wants to work with Internet Explorer 8!  Any attempt to use anything higher then that will result in the site coming up, but when you click LOGIN, the system looks like it is doing something, then it will CRASH and Say that the IE has a problem and needs to close.  If I use firefox, the site will not even show anything on the screen.

I have tried compatibility mode in IE 11 to no avail, and have added the site to the Intranet Zone, but it cant work, and will still crash - I am not sure why this is an issue, and I am not even sure if there is a way to tell IE versions higher then 8 to act like 8, and with the newer browsers coming out, it will almost be a certainty that IE 8 is depreciated, and I am not sure if there is a way to allow this system to RUN in the newer versions of IE.

I have even tried Google Chrome, and It just says that it is unavailable.

Any help here would be appreciated!

  9. Good Afternoon Falcon:

As I am "test driving" this computer to see if I like windows 8, I am hesitant to change any of the registry settings and the like.  This computer is similar in scope to my dell Inspiron 1545 that I have had for about 5 years - I think the problem lies in the browser itself, but I cannot seem to make any adjustments to the way that it deals with things that are "intergrated"  Java and Flash seem to be 2 of the pieces that are - In retrospect, they say that you can run things in desktop mode, or you can run other browsers like Chrome/FireFox/Opera.  When I try to do this (Playing Facebook Games) it's slow, and as stated to Chuck Above, the computer will sometimes freeze when I click on an icon and it would start to open and hang, requiring me to start Task Manager and end tasks, then I can reinitiate the task and she opens right up.

I was also told that Windows 8 is slow anyway, and it doesnt matter if you had a faster machine because things would still be slow.  I will post the specs of this machine in my next post - Maybe that would help :)

  10. Chuck:

Nope:  Has nothing to do with installing apps:  This has to do with a couple issues that, although I have researced them on several websites, and tried to do what I know could attempt to fix the problem, it is a no go, and I am at a loss.

First, I have a problem with Windows 8.1 and sometimes what happens is when I open computer, or file explorer or something in windows 8, it seems to lock up, and I have to either do a ALT+CTRL+DELETE and kill off an open process and the reopen it to see something, or I do a ALT+CTRL+ESC and kill it that way - if I close it and reopen it, it works fine, but god is it slow sometimes.

Second:  IE10 seems to be an issue as well.  Everything is intergrated into the IE browser, which means guys like us that want to run legacy programs have to deal with Java and Flash being built into the browser.  Facebook Games sometimes will not load at all, or they will load some of the way and hang, or the screen will load and hang there and will not move.  I upgraded to 8.1 and got IE11, but the same problems remain -  Facebook games are slow, and I have been told that REGARDLESS of what type of Win8 Machine you have, it will still be slow.  I have been running everything in desktop mode, but playing games is rediculously slow.

Third: You cannot put anything LESS then IE10 on a win8 machine.  I believe the Facebook Games are not made for ie10/11 - being an old school kinda guy, I downloaded the latest versions of Firefox and Opera and cannot even get these to run the games because they load and hang - Is there a way to "rip out" some of these IE dependent safeguards and get the thing to run like win7, short of using a Virtual Box for running anything that win8 will not run - it is a pain in the butt to think that, with all the new technology that MS has nowadays that simple games that use Java or flash could be dependant on IE to run, and will not run well on win8.

MS should NOT dictate what will run in their browser - this intergration of Java and Flash, and not being able to decide what you are running and when makes it hard to want to maintain a win8 machine - all my programs run in 7, and I am seriously considering returning the laptop if I cannot get it moving faster, and get rid of junk that slows it down - If I cant even run FF or opera to play games, what good is IE10/11 ir win 8.

Can anyone help me figure this out??  everything I have read says 8 is good, but I am leaning back towards 7, because at least things dont freeze up and die.

Thanks for your earlier post Chuck - I appreciate your help!!

  11. Hello Everyone:

I have a New Win8 (8.1) Toshiba Satilite laptop - I tried to run Facebook Games using IE10 and 11, but they are all running SLOW, and there seems to be no way to run them similar to the way they ran in win 7.  I am not sure if there is a way to just run the games in a mode similar to win 7, with the speed that it ran in win 7 - Is there something that can be done to allow me to control what is installed on this thing?? IE seems to have both the Java and the Flash "intergrated" but I just want to run stuff like I did (especially on the internet in a browser) as I always did.  Seems that the apps they have are "missing" the games.

Can give you specs later, if needed.

    Thanks Team

  12. Chuck:

I recently visited my Dad and Stepmom and worked on their Dell Desktop.  I told them that the EOL Date was fast approaching for Windows XP, and that they would have to upgrade thier computer'a OS to either Win7 or Win8 - Since my Dad's Laptop (a year newer then mine, and an inspiron 1545) has Windows 7 64 Bit, I recommended Windows 7 Home Premium 32 Bit for her desktop, because Windows 8 is so far removed from Windows 7 in the way it works, that I didn't want to confuse them, since they are both comfortable with Windows 7.

The second Reason is that they can get the upgrade or the full install of the program at a discount from her work, and we should be able to update the OS prior to the "dropdead date" of April 8, 2014.

I wonder how many people are still using XP and are unaware of this still?

  13. Brian, you should check out our Xbox One coverage: http://www.besttechie.com/tag/xbox-one/

    Jeff:

Thank You for that Information.  I did not realize that the BT Site had a section on the XBox One - Very Informative, and I have not been online much for the past 2 weeks or so because I have been working, so the article I found was dated the 19th of June  -hehehehe oh well :)

    Take Care ;)

  14. Microsoft says that rumors of non backward compatability are false rumors designed to impact their sales. They also said that the rumors of single install are also false.

Remember they still have competition and do not want to alienate loyal fans.

    Pete:

I think I will agree with your information - There is just SO MUCH information out there, rumor, false information, made up garbage, and god knows what else, that as you say, it is "stirring up the bees" and I think I want to see what they (MS) say closer to launch ;)
