  1. Google is testing a new faster more accurate search engine. Reportedly it cuts search times in half and eliminates a lot of the incorrect returns. Google CAFFEINE http://scitech.blogs.cnn.com/2009/08/12/go...-search-engine/
  2. Looks like he does not live that far from you as the crow flies by Texas standards ; but there is this big damned lake in the way . I was just glad to hear from him after all this time.
  3. My operating system preference and recommendation is always "The one that the computer came with because it was was designed for and built to use that operating system." Of course this really only applies to systems that were actually designed (an OEM system from one of the big manufacturers) and not to one thrown together by some neighbor kid or guy who makes a living on ebay while living in his mothers basement; those are not really designed so much as assembled with the hope that a prayer to the odd gods of the galaxy will make it boot up and not crash when everything is connected and windo
  4. Most cookies are harmless; they are simple text files which keep track of your customizations and history on the site so that they do not have to keep them on their servers. Wouldn't you rather have your marketwatch stock tracking preferences stored on your computer than on theirs? How about search history? Would you prefer google to keep a record of what you search for on their servers or on your computer? In general the cookie is designed to only be read by the issuing site and only record information about what you do on that site. When you "delete private data" or clear cache and cookie

  6. Just got a reply from Marsh. He is still with us. Will wait for him to fill you all in.

    25 Years!

Congratulations. I thought that having our anniversary on my birthday was a smart move; but I always forget which year it was.
  8. AH, I'll stick to home cooking. I made a batch of my pressure cooker pulled pork yesterday. Such a versatile food once you cook it to falling apart goodness and shred it up. I put up two jars of stock (quarts) for later use. Once done you can make barbeque sandwiches (on a burger bun with some kraft barbeque sauce and shredded cheddar cheese). Or burritos with pica de gallo and cheese or avocado and sour cream . Both of the above can be made "Carolina" style with mustard and cole slaw. Or try it with mustard on white bread. Or on rice , in a quick hash with diced onions and frozen hash brown
  9. Marty can you still login? If so go to start / run and type control userpasswords2 hit enter there is a place there to change the (Safe mode)hidden administrator password.
  10. I doubt that the Yahoo search will be replaced with a Bing search. More likely it is a matter of replacing the engine and servers. IE, you will still have a Yahoo search bar; and there will still be Yahoo search; but instead of using the engine they use now and returning the results and ads that they have now; it will use Bing engine and servers and put in ads from a shared pool. Likewise Bing will benefit from increasing ad revenue by including Yahoo ad customers in their search results. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/31/technolo...ml?_r=1&hpw http://www.pcauthority.com.au/News/151523,
  11. I agree; telling microsoft what features they "cannot" include in their operating system because someone else has a competing product is really going to far. Should they tell GM that they cannot put Firestone tires on their cars and must instead sell them with no tires at all because Pirelli , Toyo, and Yokahama also make tires and do not sell as many as Bridgestone/Firestone? I see nothing wrong with microsoft bundling Internet Explorer with windows; especially now that it is independent from Windows Explorer . If you do not like the Tires included with your new car you go an d buy a d
  12. Precisely. A lot of applications which have freeware versions specify that they are for individuals in home use. If you are a technician who gets paid for your services the EULA requires you to buy the license since you are making money off of their product. The nice thing about PC Decrapifier is that it simplifies the cleanup. It automates the uninstall of the more common trial offers and bundled nagware which otherwise you could spend hours going through add/remove programs and deleting folders and shortcuts and scheduled tasks etc.
  13. For some things I actually prefer BING. I mean in google ; more often than not when I copy a link from a search it copies the full google referral code, something huge and long . But BING lets you just copy and paste the link. http://virgintech.org/2009/06/04/how-to-ad...soft-bing-tips/ http://www.techhail.com/internet/microsoft...pera-chrome/331 http://www.ghacks.net/2009/06/01/install-b...d-web-browsers/ I like the "clear all " (as well as see all) option in your search history in BING too. Lets you know what you already searched for as well as wipe the list easily. The preview (you mouse
  14. I stick with Pricelessware Each year they compile a list of the best freeware and produce a CD Iso image you can download and burn / distribute http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/ http://www.bing.com/search?q=pricelessware...m=QBRE&qs=n It is a compilation an annual list of freeware, based on alt.comp.freeware newsgroup. It is quite extensive. http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2008/PL2008ProgramIndex.php http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2008/2008PL-CD-about.php Almost time for submissions for the best of 2009 to begin.
  15. I would say system restore from command prompt and find out what update it is that is giving you problems.
  16. Pic of Cheney's hunting rifle. Note the beer holder on left
  17. Master Wong? Isn't that who fixes SCDs computers all the time?
  18. Well any chance of trying a different monitor? By swapping out monitors you identify whether it is the monitor or the computer. If you id it as the computer then you start with things like the video card as likely cause and swap until you find the cause.
  19. http://www.teamviewer.com/index.aspx As TT said; the answer is yes. Worms are network aware viruses which can detect networked computers (even networked over the internet like this) and spread from one to the other without action on your part. Additionally there are viruses which exploit holes in older third party applications to allow "zero day exploit" installs where they can turn off your antivirus and install silently. It is imperative that you keep your system updated and that means not just having an up to date and effective antivirus but using windows update and the secunia software in
  20. Check refresh rate and resolution. Looks like one of them is not optimal / supported.
  21. http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=faceboo...;fp=VEE02fthf5k Looks to be a common problem. Glad I do not use Facebook . Can you ping it? Have you cleared temp and temp internet files and cookies?
  22. I hear Sarah Lane will be hosting a series on CurrentTV this fall. http://current.com/users/sarahlane.htm http://www.sarahlane.com/ http://current.com/tech
  23. Yeah, I ran into this post from Amy recently http://forums.online-sweepstakes.com/archi...p/t-148992.html Ah, what a difference five years make. I emailed Dave and am waiting for an answer. At least it was not bounced back undeliverable. Tried contacting browninator but he has not been to G4 in some time and his email is a college email an no longer valid.
  24. Yes, that was it. I seem to recall he once said he would move to Costa Rica if Obama won the election (I think it was him) ; but always thought that was just a joke. Sure hope he is okay and wish he had told us if he was moving somewhere without internet so we would not worry. To many times old friends just dissappear and like Gary Bogart (Il Wiccan) we just have to assume they died and no one in the family had any idea that they were members of a greater community that misses them. I really appreciate that Drew's father took the time to fill us in on what happened and stay in touch with us.
